Ship Size Ratio

Recommended Posts

Ok, I am wondering, what is a ships length to height ratio? I am building a ship and wanted to make it almost realistic :)

Thanks in advance!

Though I'm no expert on the subject, I believe a ship should be six times as long as it is wide, and two times as high as wide.

X=width

6x=length

2x=hight

I think Admiral M is correct. But be aware! If you use the standard lego hulls, the hight is not really 2 times the width. I think 1 or 1,5 times is better in that case because the standard hulls make it look like the ship is floating. So in that case, part of the hull is under water.

The masts: I believe the main mast has to be as long as the hull and the foremast a little bit shorter and the final mast even shorter than the foremast.

In reality, it varied--a galleon was relatively short, fat and tall of proportion, while a frigate or ship-of-the-line would be longer and lower relative to it's beam. If you check out Sid Meier's Pirates!, the 3d models ingame are pretty good for relative proportions of various designs.

I must agree, it depends on the type of ship you are trying to build. I would do some reasurch into the ship you are looking at and find its dimensions.

@ Diamondback I have never meet some one else who playes that game woot. :pir_laugh2:

As a rule of thumb, a ship of the line (of the age of sail) above the waterline is almost consiberably wider in relation to its height between the f'castle and the poop deck (the lowest part).

However at the stern, it is pretty much always higher than it is wide since it gets both narrower and higher there.

This is true for all capital ships of the era I have ever seen models of, also for galeons of course (which have much higher sterns).

For more detailed information, you should specify what sort of ship you're wanting this ratio of.

The ship I am building is a sort of brig i guess, it has 2 masts plus the bowsprit, with 6 cannons and a crew of about 15, but it isnt really realistic, since there is no interior, it is just the bottom of the lego standard hulls. I just wanted to make sure it didnt look too tall or too short. Thanks for all the response!

Ok, for building on hull sections I guess, it needn't be accurate but it should create the impression of being that.

This is a pic of a US brig replica (Niagara), the original was build in 1813.

Note, that it is quite flat above the waterline (open gun deck!). Also the sails array and bowsprit are overhanging considerably (overall lenght 198 feet compared to 111 at the waterline)

Excellent, that is the sort of thing I am looking for, thanks everyone, Once i figure out how to rope rig my ship, and get some sails, I will post it!

Offtopic: Yarr, matey! Cleanin' Henry Morgan's clock as opening mission FTW! (Once you take his ship, you're all but unstoppable if you know what you're doing--Grape & Chain and campin' on their stern, baby!)

Still off topic: aye but a ship of the line now theres a vessel that even Morgan can't beat. If only they wern't so rare :pir_bawling:

On topic: Could someone tell me how big gunports should be if I am aiming for realism.

Offtopic: Get an SOTL in front of my Grim Reaper and I'll show ye an SOTL made into a Tortuga brothel wench, matey...

Ontopic: I'd say anywhere from 2-4 studs is plausible.
