Still Raindrop Posted June 30, 2009 This is one of the more beautiful buildings I have ever seen. The architecture is astoundingly intricate, but it is somehow subtle enough so that it adds to the whole, rather than drawing attention to the individual bits. There is so much to enjoy, and it can easily be done by looking at the details or just taking the whole thing in. I love the use of the few dark red bricks--it looks great, and it makes it clear that this is a brick building, not a red-painted one (something I've found troubling in all my attempts to create brick buildings). I might have to borrow that color scheme idea. I have recently been fiddling around with a CC-scale post office in red and grey (or red and tan), but I think I've been using too much red for it to look convincing. And that's just my initial impression of the exterior! That interior is equally breathtaking! The giant window-arch (not sure what to call it) is perfect. The little details are all splendid, and, like the outside, they all work together to create a wonderful feel. The interior is much less subtle than the exterior, but that is perfectly fitting, as there is much more hustle and bustle inside a train station than outside. I have to agree with Hinckley on the round windows, they look unsemetrical, but maybe the architect intended that. And i can't help but wonder why the trains would stop almost inside a city block? Excellent job! I can't say enough about it. It fits incredibly well with the official modular sets, although it kind of outshines them. The inset is really well executed and I'm going to have to study that curved roof more. I really love your lamposts and the detail of your interior.I have only three suggestions for improvement: 1. I would try to get the front arch of the windows more curved. 2. I wish there was a way to get the studs out of those brick-built round white windows and 3. I suggest spindle fence on the roof as opposed to the "chain link" style. Other than that, it's amazing! I will look more later, but right now my partner is parking the car in a tight spot and I need to get out and shut the computer down ... Excellent work! I've bee fiddling with the white brick build windows for quite some time, but I couldnt get a sturdy construction without studs. And I did not want to make somehting which is not sturdy. My beer pals tend to knock things over around the house after some Jupilers. On the other hand I felt that brick build windows appeal to me a lot. Since you already made the station, are there any thoughts of making an underground subway terminal under the streets? An underground... I've visited Budapest a couple of years ago and saw a beautyfull underground station there, that was part of the oldest underground line on mainland Europe. At least that was what I was told. That is still something I would like to build into a MOC sometime. Now I have to get more red bricks and put aside all the yellow ones. Seriously, the arc on the front facade is phenomenal. Pure artistry. I'm beginning to notice recent works of geniuses like u and marcosbessas : light bluish gray and one other colour. The combination is subliminally enchanting. And oh, what happen to your other train station (the tan-coloured version)? Ok, now to break up my own Centraal Station. And get more red pieces. You Da Man. Yes in my experience keeping the main color scheme basic is always a good starting point. Sometimes I build an entire MOC in basic colors and put in the details later. When you put the details in in another darker or lighter version of the main colors they tend to be more pleasing. But as with everything there is no iron rule on this. I've actually put in dark red, reddish brown and dark orange bricks into the side walls to give that brick build impression. But it is always a bit tricky not to go over the top with these detailings. It's a matter of trial and error. For the interior I contemplated tiling the platforms as well. Actually the basic structure of all windows is exactly symetrical, except for the location of the studs in the white brick build windows. The unsemetrical look comes from the photographing under the MOc under an angle, because there can be some dept (1 to 2 studs) from the outside of an arch to the actual front of the window. Even in the dead on photo there is still some angle there which may give the appearance of unsemetricallity. The moddling is a-symetrical ofcourse. And there are some other tiny details in there that break up the symetry a bit. But that was to make it more interesting to look at. I tried to make the MOC as such that it could fit with the CC buildings, but also coud function as a stand alone building. I remember (or think to remember ) seeing a dead end station which is snuck into a city block. But I admit it is rarely done. At least I know for sure that the Antwerp station is next to the Antwerp Zoo. I really wanted to do something different from the normal lantarn posts and I just love those elaborate lantarns. My initial designs were a bit too large. Took me some time to get to these. Thanks legotrainfan, Fitting the entire Super Chief. Yes housing the super chief would require quite a lot of extra platform sections. However I've seen in some dead end stations that they extend the platform far beyond the back of the station. The details are perfect, they look like sculptures on the walls! The colour combination really works and I particularly like how the red colour looks amongst the other colours. The whole front part is really eye capturing and I think that based on that, you can use this building for other purposes like a theater, making of course the proper interior changes. What I really love is the back part! . The platforms idea is just excellent! It is still a playable interior, being simultaneously a 4-wall building. Great! The good think IMO is that you can expand the platforms outside the main building without losing any of the realistic look and function of the train station. The (ingenious, but still realistic) idea of letting the tracks come in from the back is indeed the only way this can be incorporated in a CC-style line-up. By releasing something like this in the Modular Buildings line, LEGO could get me into trains, because I just have to buy every set in that line , and a station wouldn't be complete without a train... Your design would be perfectly worthy of being officially released, but I fear waaaaaaaaay (I will leave out the rest of the a's, but you get the point) too expensive. You are right this could pose a difficutly in incoperating it in a layout. However, there are some options to fix this in the layout. Either way, am I allowed to buy this modular? So I could make it myself. Not sure if possible, but would be amazing! Btw, extended platforms are needed for the Horizon Express, but it looks fairly easy to add some. This was the first picture I saw on this forum, and I am in love with this building.
