Dear CGH,

weren't the British ships at Trafalgar copies of French designs?

There is some hint in wikipedia:

linky here

But I'm quite sure I read somewhere Thomas Slade copied the French hull design.

Of course the French could have copied the Dutch designs first.. :pir-tongue:

Maybe Errorist knows for sure how everything links up?

Kind regards,

Teddy

Some ships were not actually copies - they were actual French ships that had been captured by the Brits. Apart from that, British and French ships were very similar, you know, with the paint scheme, etc. And the Dutch had some amazing ships to protect their merchants, but we all know what happened when the Brits came back to Copenhagen for Round Two in 1807. (Don't know? Click here.

If me facts are wrong, please correct - if not, then excuse the naval nerdity. :pir-tongue:

He looks like a very powerful man :pir-classic: , must be very proud to have his own personal cannon :pir_laugh2: though he could also use some servants because I think he is too important to use the cannon by himself. :pir_laugh2: Anyway, the French always want a good new officer, great to have him within the Royal fleet!

Uhm... Denmark is not the Dutch Republic.

Here is a link to the Anglo Dutch wars.

Result: Dutch domination of world trade until 1713

We even took over England for a while. :pir-tongue:

The Glorious Revolution of 1688 ended the 17th century conflict by placing Prince William III of Orange on the English throne as co-ruler with his wife Mary. The Dutch merchant elite began to use London as a new operational base.

I think he means the seabattle of Copenhagen where the British attacked the Danish. Because Denmark had an alliance with Russia and France, the alliance tried to ruin England's economy by closing their ports for English ships. One of Napoleons plans to ruin England.
