I'm a bit disappointed. I finally decided to buy the parts to power my Emerald Night today. But the Belgian www.Lego.com shop states that the XL-motor and IR receiver are backordered, with shipping dates of resp. 20th and 16th april '10. It seems really hard for Lego to keep all the parts available.

I think since it's just after Christmas, and the products in question are aimed more at AFOLs than their primary market, its understandable, however I can also understand you're dissapointment. Lego is probably focused on manufacturing the next batch of new sets, and these parts wont become a priority till the new trains are released. Once the new trains are in production, I'd hope the stock of these parts would become more reliable on S@H, though the whole trains line seems to be a niche market in the wider Lego Group picture anyway.

FWIW, I recently encountered something similar with the U.S. LEGO.com site. Given the lack of availability direct from LEGO I purchased two XL motors from bricklink. Those motors arrived today. I honestly can't say enough good about bricklink.

Yes, Bricklink is an option, and it has been very usefull to me in the past, but it is also subject to the laws of demand. An XL-motor from Lego.com is EUR 11.99; the cheapest one within the EU on Bricklink is USD 25. The IR-receiver is EUR 16.99 on Lego.com, EUR 25.00 on Bricklink. If this was sliced bread, I probably would buy from Bricklink. But after all it's still 'a toy'. I'll wait for the more reasonably priced stuff from Lego.com. It's just inconvenient.

Woah, very nice review. It's convinced me to buy this set, which will make it my very first Lego Train! Well, I got the Hogwarts Express, but that doesn't count, right?

Anyway, does anyone know if this is still on shelves in shops? I'm thinking Toys R Us? If so I could wizz down before college tomorrow and pick it up, Thanks.

That all depends on where you are (I can't tell from your profile), but in general the Emerald Night is a S@H exclusive, so is only available through S@H and LEGO brand stores. It was available through Myer stores in Australia but sold out the first day.

I'm from the UK, so like you say I doubt I'll be able to buy it from the shops. I'll have to buy it form S@H over half term instead :cry_happy:.

Was avaliable from Toyworlds in New Zealand. I saw one a couple of weeks ago in Nelson. I bought 3 from LEGO S@H last year and have 3 more on layby at a Toyworld. :classic:

I've been told that each Toyworld store received a limited number (between 1 and 4, maybe 5, depending on the size of the store) and will not be getting more, so I'm wondering if they will be able to get you the three you requested - unless unsold sets from other stores, so good luck with that.

Who told you that? It seems very silly to only give a store 5 of each set. Makes no sense at all.default_sceptic.gif

The Toyworld's have to preorder the exclusive sets. The one I use got in 4. They put 3 away for me to pay off (lay buy). :sweet:

Sorry about the hassle with the 1x1 Technic brick. The issue stems from instances where the small tan gear can come off once the engine is converted with Power Functions. Under a load, the gear does not have enough contact with the 5 1/2 module cross axel and can work its way off the end. In order to prevent this from happening, we've added an extra 1x1 tan Technic brick and a 1x1 round gold plate to the latest production runs of the Emerald Night. This brick assembly should be placed on the 6 module cross-axel for the drive wheels in order to physically block the gear from falling off.

The pdf on lego.com needs to be updated because it is not the latest version of the fix. I've spoken with our building instructions team who will work on updating the file asap.

I just wanted to say thanks to Google and this thread I was able to understand what step 5 in the new documentation is trying to do. Unfortunately, the following steps to not picture the piece in place and it makes it difficult to understand that the tan hole piece goes onto the axel.

More than a little disappointed with the stickers! I'd have been willing to pay a few extra quid to have printed parts instead of stickers!

They look awful with fingerprints & slightly off centre if you're not careful with them!

The only disappointing bit of an otherwise fantastic model

Got this set yesterday and built the locomotive + tender, I put in the medium motor and tested it right away on my 12V test track, to my surprise it worked perfectly! No problems with traction. The next step would be to modify the locomotive for the 12V system + DCC. :)

I can't find this online anywhere! Well, without have to pay a stupidly high price. Anyone have any ideas where to look? If not, I'll just wait till it comes back in stock on LS@H.

I finally ordered myself an Emerald Night via the Lego Shop at Home site. My first Lego set in 4 years so I'm pretty excited.

I'm also thinking of getting Power Functions. Would anyone recommend me getting them, it is a lot of money, and I keep changing my mind.

If you want to run the Emerald Night, and are not invested in 9V or 12V, then I would recommend PF.

Weirdly enough, after reading through this thread, it seems that I'm the only one who actually has a real gripe with the stickers. I'm not going to complain about preferring printed bricks, since that much is obvious - and besides I feel that the inclusion of printed slopes was a nice gesture towards us AFOLs anyway, so I'm pretty much fine with the inclusion of a sticker sheet. What definitely bugged me though was the quality of printing of the stickers I received. Poorly overlayed colours, discolouring here and there, mismatched printing... I could hardly believe my eyes! Perhaps I should take a few pics to prove that I'm not just being picky - but the worst part is that the mismatched printing was also evident on the printed slope bricks.

So while I do think this is a brilliant set, I found the quality of prints on those printed slopes and the sticker sheet absolutely appalling, and to be honest it ruined some of the excitement of finally building/owning this set. I've contacted LEGO Customer Support and asked for a replacement sticker sheet seeing as the LRTS logo and the big 10194 numbers on both sides of the engine definitely look VERY bad...

Anyone else had this problem?

I'm busy to change the emerald for 12v. It's a neverending project. It goes not smootly through the points and the connecting rods are causing that the big wheels blocks.

I made some more modifications. First how the design of lego is:

f1_-_orginal_design_of_lego.jpg_thumb.jpg

And this what I made, to prevend that the connecting rods blocks the bog wheels:

f2_-_adjustment_no_stress_wheels_connecting_rods.jpg_thumb.jpg

I changed the connecting rods also, otherwise it will be still wider than 8studs. Trains wider than 8 studs means collisions between other trains. Tracks lay next to eachother with 12v. I adjusted the 1/2pins of technic lego:

f3_-_adjusted_pins_for_connecting_rods.jpg_thumb.jpg

This means the emerald train is now exactly 8studs wide:

I still waiting for some parts, to finish this train. When the train is finished, I show you the pic's of mine 12v version of emerald train.

Parts are arrived and this is the final design. It isn't tested yet, haven't got the time for it  .

Here the bottom view:

Here a pic of the train itself, which almost look like the orginal design. Only modified for 12v.
