Mister Phes Posted October 26, 2005 Has anyone made a custom LEGO Mermaid before? Aren't there mermaid tails in some of the latest Harry Potter sets? Aside from those how would you go about making mermaid tails?
Dreamweb Posted October 26, 2005 Are they? I'll have to check, if they're in small ones perhaps I'll get my first HP set (that'll be the day!). Otherwise I'll think of something :)
Mister Phes Posted October 26, 2005 Maybe you'll come across some on eBay or BrickLink to save you the torture of buying a Harry Potter set. Do you think its worth moving these posts to a LEGO Mermaid thread so we can expand upon the discussion without disrupting the current thread's topic? Dreamweb Posted October 26, 2005 If other people have some ideas, then yes, personally I haven't tried anything yet so I have nothing to talk about :) For now that is...
Mister Phes Posted October 26, 2005 Well we just don't know until we move it to another thread. In a new thread its more likely to get noticed and get response. But if not it can always be deleted or merged back into wence it came.
Dreamweb Posted October 26, 2005 I took this image from this thread: Well, looks like a mermaid to me, however I'd imagine mermaid's tail to be more errr... slender. Well this WILL require making a custom tail.
Mister Phes Posted October 27, 2005 Afterall, you wouldn't want something straight out of a Harry Potter set would you? Some customisation required!
Starwars4J Posted October 27, 2005 I actually got that set. I love the minifigs in flesh tone with the closed eyes (they made for great corpses), but I hated the mermaid. They made it so that you can make the mer...person stand. I don't think any merperson would be standing on that thing, it would have been much better to make it longer, and thinner... Mister Phes Posted October 27, 2005 If the mer-person couldn't stand, then how would it be positioned? I don't think they look right lying on their belly!
The Middleman Posted October 27, 2005 I agree with Phes. I, for one, like the merpeople.
Mister Phes Posted October 27, 2005 I don't see anything wrong with them, but I don't think I could take a mer-person from a Harry Potter set and plonk it straight into a Pirate MOC. Even if the tail was used maybe the torso or head would have to be exchanged to look more appropriate. That head just doesn't sit right with me!
Dreamweb Posted October 27, 2005 it would have been much better to make it longer, and thinner My point exactly. It should also have the ability to move to some degree... Then the mermaid can stand or sit on it, depending on the position of the tail. BTW mermaids are my long-time friends because my city's emblem is a mermaid. Mister Phes Posted October 27, 2005 Well I'll plonk this in the thread despite facing nudity issues. Its the Coat of Arms of Warsaw afterall so it shouldn't be an issue. Now lets have a closer look... At the fish tail that is... I like the way this mermaid tail curves upwards so she's not standing on the fins. If there was a LEGO version there could be a couple of stud holes underneath the curved part so it could connect to other bricks.
Dreamweb Posted October 27, 2005 Yes, that would be a great idea. We can see something like this here (from Warsaw again, I won't put this picture into the thread because of its size). Now another possibility would be a sitting mermaid. This time something from Lego's home country - Copenhagen Mermaid.
Mister Phes Posted October 27, 2005 Yes, that would be a great idea. We can see something like this here (from Warsaw again, I won't put this picture into the thread because of its size). To me this looks a woman who is setting on a fish that is diving into the water! But yes I kinda get the idea I think! Very statute posture too! Now another possibility would be a sitting mermaid. This time something from Lego's home country - Copenhagen Mermaid. Hmmm... This is interesting, but how well would it translate into LEGO?
Dreamweb Posted October 27, 2005 As I said, the tail could be mobile to some degree. Perhaps it should have hinges, or work in a way similar to Lego palm trees. Of course the second option is rather hard to achieve in a MOC (bricks of required shape and colour and with a similar type of connection to palm parts to my knowledge don't exist), while the first might look less realistic... Well I'm still going to try building something, I've got ideas, just little free time...

The way they have it "standing" is just unnatural. Having it curvier, with maybe some joint/hinge for SOME movablility
Mister Phes Posted October 28, 2005 Ok you guys get building your custom tails! It'd be a miracle if LEGO came along and too heed of your curved tail suggestions so you're going to have to make them yourself. And then I will look at them and think "Ahhhhhhhhhhh... Excellent!!! Its about time I got up off my butt and got a digital camera"
Sir Dillon Posted October 28, 2005 Here are a bunch of brick built mer-people that might help, http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=363531 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=456806 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=205073 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=252024 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=395188 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=789837 http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=601368 Though, I'm not sure if that was what you were looking for... Sting Posted October 28, 2005 Awesome Mermaid/men! All of them are done pretty good... although the Naga I think are based on Warcraft... which are almost Mermaids... but more like humanoid serpants...
Dreamweb Posted October 28, 2005 King Neptune! I rememer I wanted to build him a long time ago, when I didn't even think about mermaids... Now it's time to try both.

It woud be interesting to see a screen capture of these critter, you don't have to have one or could make one?
Sir Dillon Posted October 28, 2005 although the Naga I think are based on Warcraft. Oh, they probably are then, I just thought they looked sort of like mer-people, so I posted 'em anyway. Glad I was able to help.
