[MOC] Hummer H1 - Lego Technic 42177 Model B

Recommended Posts

The Hummer H1 is one of the most iconic vehicles ever created. I don't know if there is anyone who doesn't know this car, even though it premiered a long time ago. This vehicle has always been on my list to build, although at a very distant position. Thinking about another alternative to the 42177 set, I started to wonder if it is possible to build a Hummer from it. I managed to do it, although not without problems... :pir-classic:

The Hummer has a very characteristic design. The chassis is basically a frame, four wishbones and a V8 engine. The biggest challenge was building an independent suspension. The original set has a rigid axle at the back so I was missing one CV joint. However, I managed to build a custom one. I added a LOW/HIGH gearbox and a central diff lock. Due to the length of the wishbones and the two different diffs in the axles, it was not possible to make a rear axle lock. This is not a problem, because I wanted a realistic ground clearance of the vehicle, which is 6 studs. When building the V8 engine, I was inspired by the new Koenigsegg Jesko set. The design is very simple and compact but looks great.

When I finished the chassis, it was time for the rest. The Hummer is quite large and I was worried whether I would have enough bricks to build the entire body. When I started building it a little after 8:00 PM, I got so caught up in it that I didn't take my eyes off the bricks until 5:30 AM the next day :pir-murder: I already had a prototype of the body and I knew that there would be enough bricks. However, later I had to rebuild the sides of the vehicle. The prototype had angeled door pillars, but it turned out that they were problematic when opening the doors. The new version is much more solid and the doors open without any problem, and are additionally attached at the bottom and top.

It is very nice model; as you said everyone likes it (until you need to visit petrol station) and literally undistructible because it is indeed ladder chassis with awd  independent suspension with portal axles and huge V8. Design is evergreen, like ritter sport chocolate slogan: cube, practic, good.

You made beautifull MOC once again.

The general shape of the Hummer H1 is very recognisable in this model, great work on the shaping even with a restricted part selection, I like all the square shaping! The tires are a good fit, even the rims look nice on it :)

Just out of curiosity, can you show the custom CV joint that you built?

Better this or the Unimog? I really can't choose!
Again, as a B model, it's hard to do better, great work!

Well. Maybe I'll paste a picture of the entire drive system. You can see the CV joint there. It's really nothing special but it works.

By the way, an interesting fact. I was so keen to get a realistic Hummer clearance that the drive system has a clear friction of the CJ joints during assembly. After building the entire model, when the full weight of the Hummer loads the suspension, the drive works smoothly :D

There were not enough universal joints? nice idea to replicate one.

There is just one universal joint (page 273 in instructions book)

Thanks, nice little joint, though it looks a bit fragile, even for a manual model. Couldn't it have been built symmetric, by using two of the blue 2L thin liftarms on both ends?

Well that's a very good question. I put this CV Joint together like this because it's solid enough for the manual version. In addition, at the stage when I built the chassis I didn't want to use the useful connectors. Now I checked and I see that I could have made it symmetrically. As I mentioned earlier it wasn't necessary because it's quite solid. I also assumed that during the build if someone wanted to make the RC version they would change it to the original CV Joint anyway :)
