MrOutlaw 18 posts Posted August 22 (edited) Ahoy! I had some spare time recently, so I decided to play with Bricklink Studio and build a soldier's ship - this is how the "Royal Navy Frigate" was created. It consists of 1293 bricks; dimensions are 59.5 cm x 44.1 cm x 21.8 cm. Main features 3 cannons that can be quickly moved to both sides; an easily removable deck that provides access to the ship's hold; an anchor on chain controlled by a rotating mechanism – the front part of the ship can be also entirely taked out; a furnitured captain's cabin accessible from both sides thanks to hinged drop-down walls; additional space under the stateroom, which can be used as a berthing or prison cell for captured pirates; 5 minifigures: admiral, two officers, and two soldiers. All elements except those in metallic gold, one in dark bluish gray and minifigures were already in production. As for sails – these are parts #87675 and #87676 – with new printing design. To be honest this post is bitter-sweet for me, because I also wanted to invite you to Lego Ideas to support this project - unfortunately today it was rejected due to the fact TLG released Pirates of the Barracuda Bay in LEGO Ideas line. The comment I received was reffering to "commonality of design between galleon and frigate style ships", so "this build would fall under this concept category and sadly overlap". I don't see any possibility to change it so I am not going to resubmit it. Anyway, time for images Edited August 22 by MrOutlaw
Elephant Knight 373 posts Posted August 23 Very nice, It would fit right in alongside any official set, and it's got plenty of play features too! EKnight
thewatchman 482 posts Posted August 25 It absolutely breaks my heart that builds like this get overlooked and some of the stuff that gets accepted by designer program gets made. I love this ship. It’s very very appealing to the eye, the shape and size feel very in scale with all previous ships, and I always liked the “guards” vessels too. Wonderfully designed and built. Would you be interested in creating a rebrickable step by step and parts list to this? It’s something I’d love to own on shelf.

Perhaps I will create instruction for it however I assume it would take some work and this ship has already consumed a bit too much of my time recently And there is problem with availability of some parts in metallic gold color, one dark bluish grey part(78666) and minifigures (torsos in dark red and dark blue epaulettes), so I think it is currently impossible to build exact copy. berninhr 55 posts Posted August 28 Lovely build! feels like the perfect adversary for the 3 in 1 creator ship. You got any plans to build it in real life? Would be great to see.

I am trying to explore one more option regarding this model, but if it won't work maybe I will prepare manual (depends on time).

SpacePolice89 604 posts Posted September 25 With the Eldorado Fortress retiring this year and the Creator Pirate Ship next year this would be a perfect replacement for both. I can't understand why they rejected this because Barracuda Bay was released years ago. When I checked Lego Ideas, almost half of the staff picks were builds based on old movies and tv series. They should limit those instead.
JopieK 4500 posts Posted September 25 Wow! Great job @MrOutlaw. Looks very cool. Will you be building it (even though you need to change some colors)?

It is very tempting, but first I need to raise some funds to purchase parts Currently I am trying to sell soldiers' ship ("Admirals Eagle") which I built in 2015 - I guess when I cash in, then I will visit Bricklink and do research. As for parts in metallic gold color (it is the biggest problem), maybe I'll try to paint some Lego bricks to keep the original look of Royal Navy Frigate. GeoBrick 903 posts Posted September 26 Splendid combination of colors on the ship. I love the shape of the sidewalls of the stern castle, and the front opening of the forecastle is sublime, though the forecastle itself is a bit small though. Nice finishing around the ship's Falcon statue. The only thing it really misses is an access port to the balcony on the stern.
Eggyslav 673 posts Posted September 27 Very nice ship, but it can't be a frigate. It needs to have three masts to qualify so. For now it's a Royal Navy Brig. But a marvelous brig, nontheless.

Anyway, apart from number of masts it distincts from a brig, so this is more like a hybrid for me

Cousarmy0001 520 posts Posted September 30 (edited) I'm personally not a huge fan of transom sterns. I know they existed then (the term itself stems from the 13th century), but for some reason they always seem a bit off to me on Lego ships. This said, I've got nothing else but praise for you on this. It's proportioned well (the forecastle does a lot to balance out the size of the captain's cabin), it's got a lot of clever features, it's well decorated, and I really dig the color pattern. Is there any chance we could get a few more pictures of the cabin interior? EDIT: The more I look at this, the more I like it! I really dig the removable main deck, and the panels that open to reveal the cabin and crew quarters. Nicely done! Thank you It is a bit hard to render more good images of the cabin because of available angles, but I have just uploaded another one. By the way, I think I could have made the cabin ceiling also removable.

By the way, I think I could have made the cabin ceiling also removable. On all of mine I've made the cabin ceilings removable, it's usually not all THAT big of a deal, but with your drop down sides it may not be entirely necessary. Incidentaly, mine don't have drop down sides, and I think that's a pretty cool feature you've made. What is behind the sideways ladder in the lower compartment? Is that some sort of fireplace/stove? Alternately, if you really want to make the ceiling removable, it may be worth it to make the entire captain's cabin removable, a la the 2011 Armada Flagship. You'd probably just need to add a couple of plates in the right places, and it should come right off- though as I'm looking closer the stern gallery might throw some wrenches in that. If you work it right, though, that could probably be used to hold the cabin in place so you don't need any studs to keep it from sliding off.
