I know a lot of people LOVE The Goonies, but I've never really cared for it. However, the Inferno is a fantastic setpiece and an iconic pirate ship, so I'm glad that it's finally getting a full scale LEGO set. I'm a little underwhelmed by the fan model; it's a little too straight and repetitive, but I'm sure the official design will liven things up. The ship isn't exactly wrecked; it sails away at the end of the film, so hopefully it's a full ship model and not a facade.

It's not regular LEGO pirates, but it's one of the better licensed options while we wait for the next true pirate set. :)

Well, truth be told, I last saw it maybe 3 decades ago, so... :pir-classic:

I remember it was fun to watch, and I've read somewhere that the producers wanted to give the ship away for free once the production wrapped, but no one wanted it, so they just scrapped it. :pirate:

But I think it might make a good set, LEGO will definitely add more colours to it.

Oh sorry, didn't mean to sound like I was correcting you, just putting the hope out there that they'd do a full pirate ship model rather than the more "flattened" take we see here.

I never watched the Goonies and hear about the Inferno for the first time but when i look it up i find ships like this one:

Looks pretty good

EDIT: Ok, now that i saw the backside of the fan model i have to change my mind. Not that the idea is bad, but now i doubt we will get a proper ship.

Agreed, my favourite detail are the cannon ports, would be interesting to see a vessel MOC with such ports. :pir-thumb:

Another pirate ship (or in this case shipwreck) is coming!

Good work reporting on this - we probably have sufficient interest to make the LEGO Ideas Inferno its own a topic.

But one thing I've noticed...

In the Goonies film, The Inferno technically isn't a shipwreck because during the final scene it sets sail...

No worries mate, all I meant to say is that I don't remember the film very much... Perhaps it's a good time to rewatch it. :pir-classic:

Yeah, I've seen it too. It looks like more of a playset than a proper ship. Then again the Barracuda Bay had the feature of conversion into a full ship, so there's always this possibility. :pir-classic:

As mentioned above, I didn't quite remember the ending. :pir-classic: Anyway, the ship seems to be only half-built, the other half looks like this:

And it's huuuge, I'm certain the final set will be shrunk considerably. :pir-sweet:

I love the Goonies, one of my absolute favorite childhood movies! I also happen to live in Oregon where it was filmed and have visited many of the filming locations from the movie multiple times (the Goonies House, the jail, the final scene beach, the location where the restaurant was, etc., etc.

I'm extremely excited for this set! I can't wait to see what the LEGO designers do with the concept model.

Ooh, I had not seen the other half, that's actually a pretty cool idea. If they can make the front less generic and facade-like and add some sails, I'm all for it.

I've never seen the whole movie.  Just bits & pieces here & there.  But when I saw this entry in the competition it's the one I voted for.  Pirate ship, treasure caves, what's not to like?

Even if it's not a whole ship, depending on the parts used, it may be possible to buy 2 and mirror-build the opposite side to get the entire ship.

Not a challenge I would take up, since I'm lukewarm on the movie and priced out of the large Ideas sets, but it's still a thought.

Interesting. I've never seen the Goonies, but I may have to now. If the set is a  nice enough ship, and complete enough, I'll have to get it. otherwise, an easy pass.

Surprising a seasoned sailor such as yourself hasn't seen an 80s classic!

What if it's a complete ship but doesn't have fabric sails?

Brick built sails are our communities version of helmet holes)))) Fabric sails are so much better, not even comparable

So who's going to watch The Goonies in the near future?

I'm going to rewatch it pretty soon. :pir-classic:

And by the way, knowing how deeply LEGO modified Ideas sets in the past, it would not surprise me at all if the final set was a complete ship, and all the action scenes, caves, etc. were moved to a separate build, or even several smaller separate structures. Which would actually be an upgrade in my eyes. :pir-classic:

Hmmm. If it's still a nice enough looking ship, I would get it.

Well, look at Barracuda Bay...  It was only the shipwreck island concept submitted to LEGO ideas but in the end product we got the option to display a complete ship.

Whatever the set ends up being, it ought to add more useful pirate parts into circulation which is always good (Brown masts would be greatly appreciated). Not overly impressed by the film, but the ship would make for a beautiful model.

@Franco Clarke I don't think they'll use brown mast pieces, I think they'll do like the fan model and just use some 2x2 round bricks for the mast.

Also, I don't know why people are expecting cloth sails so much, it is meant to be a wreck, you are really setting yourselves up for disappointment if you think they'll add cloth items along with the main part of the build.

Aye, the LEGO Ideas submission is meant to be a wreck, but to honour the ship seen in the movie (pictured below), it cannot have broken masts without sails.

Otherwise, consumers may feel cheated because that would not be authentic to the ship from the movie.

And maybe some are misremembering because they haven't seen the film in years, but the ship is definitely not a wreck as it sails away in the final scene.
