42172 McLaren P1 MODs and Improvements

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Please welcome to share some of your ideas for MODs and Improvements to the new 42172 McLaren P1 1:8 LEGO Supercar!

I am just starting to build this model, but I already have some ideas to pimp up this model with:

- HOG steering

- Paddle shifters in reverse order (pulling right to shift up)

- HOG shifting

- some improvements on the gearbox (e.g. limiter between neutral and 7th gear)

- and some other cool stuff

I am building the real model and a digital model in parallel, so you can follow and use the digital model for your investigations and MODs:

The original set without MODs has been finished as digital model, so far: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/omr/42172 - McLaren P1.mpd

Yes! I look forward to your "pimp" mods as much as the new released from Lego. I would be happy to assist with any experiments or prototyping that could help.

It needs complete remodeling of whole front, to look less like an abandoned child of Corvette and Lotus.

Many thanks to the author jb70 for his free supercar mods - for models of this size this is a rarity. Your pimp up Ferrari is on my shelf. From general comments I can say that HOG on such models looks out of place and it is better to make them removable. As for the McLaren, for some reason it reminds me a lot of Porsche 42056, only more modern and complex. The McLaren design is somehow too banal against the background of the big three Lego - each car there looks like a bright individuality. Even the design of the simpler Ford and Peugeot is more expressive. I understand that a deep redesign of the model goes beyond your modification, and even purple metallic will not save this one. If someone can give this model a bright individuality so that it can be placed next to the previous 3 supercars, then this will be an excellent modification. In the meantime, for me this is an excellent set of new parts, especially if China releases a copy in red or blue.

I think the gearbox could have been massivley simplified using the old orange changeoocer catches, the old and new knob wheels, and the 24 toooth clutch gear and 12 tooth clutch gear.

Box 3 has been finished as original digital model: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/omr/42172 - McLaren P1.mpd

This model is complete now, although it contains some mockups for new parts that were not yet available at ldraw.org. They will be added later. But for starting our MODs it will be OK that way.

I will now start pimping the front axle by adding Ackerman steering and HOG steering.

Would be nice to have the HoG on the roof in stead of on the dash like the other supercar pimped builds. Also would be nice to be able to lift the rear section without the need to remove the spoiler. I'm already working on a recolor, but I think everyone will do that anyways.

Curious to see your alternative designs for the wheel arches, especially parts 4443 and 4446...

And here we have a gear indicator, that can also be used for HOG shifting. I reversed the order of the paddle shifter, so that pulling the right paddle shifts one gear up, as it was the real car.

The mechanics fitted perfectly underneath the gloves compartment of the dashboard and needed only some small adjustments to be fixed. The gear indicator turns 45° per gear switch.

These are the exactly the mods (HOG shifting, HOG steering) and steering I look forward to the most. Amazing work! I can't wait.

@jb70 Would a titled steering wheel fit? IIRC it wasn't hard to implement in the previous supercar:

I was puzzling how could a steering wheel be titled but then I started to realize it is about a tilted steering wheel, right?

Keep going on, JB70 :pir_laugh2:

Honestly I would like to see a mod that makes the paddle shifters realistic (only one paddle moves when shifting) and puts them right next to the angled steering wheel as well. Similar to the @Jeroen Ottens DB11 shifter I used in my Technic Lexus LC500 MOC. Really wish the set had this and the angled wheel originally because it makes it so much more realistic.

JB70, out of interest how many hours of work has gone into this?

Don't ask:

- a woman her age

- a man his salary

- an AFOL how much time & money he spends on lego...
