SevenDeadlyStreamers 158 posts Posted August 9 Yes that sail looks good! And I hope you don’t mind, I kinda copied your canoe design for an update I’m doing to my large entry. It’s not Islanders so it will look different, but I did take inspiration from the outriggers.

Math Wizard 148 posts Posted August 11 Ahoy Matey! You know me by now- It’s Captain Crit, back with another criticism sandwhich for ye polly! I’ve been busy for the last week and not had time to look at entries, but I must say this one is quite good, especially the story. I love how you put so much effort into created a detailed comic to go along with it. I’m glad I didn’t see it earlier, or I would have had to wait for each chapter This way I can at least read most of the story. How many chapters will it be? Also, What did you use to make it? This build was so good it was real hard to come up with a critique. The only thing I can think of is the waterfall, and I’m not even sure what about it- something just seems slightly off. Maybe its the contrast between the blue of the hinges and transparent blue of the tiles, or maybe its the base of it. I might add some white or trans-clear elements to represent the foam at the base. Me favorite part o’ the build (aside from the comic) is the modularity. This is super creative an dwell thought out. I also think you did a really good job integrating the jungle foliage. And one more thing- the little outrigger looks great! I think the new design with the printed sail does indeed look better, btw. Fair Winds Matey!
BardDandelion 363 posts Posted August 12 @Marooned Marin I would say that first version (reddish brown minifigs, custom sail) works better as an update of pirates theme, it has much more "realistic" vibe. Usage of classic yellow minifigs and colorfull printed sail brings us closer to set-like territory. I would say that you should go for the style you prefer. If it's more realistic approach - custom sail and PotC figs. If it's more set-like approach - yellow minifigs and classic, printed sail. Or maybe you could go all the way and make two versions of the build - not only Islanders with their boat but also with pirates (light nougat parts) and some other details in the build? Sorry for late reply. :|
Marooned Marin 1750 posts Posted August 12 (edited) CHAPTER 9 - The OFFER <- now available - see the first post .................................................. Ahoy @Math Wizard! I'm glad you like the story, and the build. There are 13. chapters, and because the story demands it, the last two chapters (finale and epilogue) are going to be published on the same day, this Thurdsday. Yes, you are not the first to mention waterfall, especially the base, and I'll play around with few solutions and see how that turns out. Thank you for your kind and constructive feedback. @BardDandelion Yes, I agree with you that reddish brown minifigures work better with custom sail. Here is the thing regarding the use of POTC islanders, lacking the original yellow islanders minifigures, I used reddish brown one on the images of the real build. However, in my mind, this build and the island is inhabited by original islanders, like in digital renders. I'm thinking about entering LEGO Ideas with this design (I know I have better chance winning a lottery...), but with some tweaks here and there to meet LEGO guidelines, and in that version I'm going with original yellow Islanders, and as you suggested, also adding the pirates to the mix, who try to plunder the island. And don’t worry about a duel, yours is better simply because you brick-built the canoe. I took a short cut and used the Islanders red canoe, lol

NOD 1751 posts Posted August 15 1 hour ago, Marooned Marin said: The question remains, how did Steve got caught in the endless loop in the first place? Steve didn't eat spinach as a child, so now he is punished and is in an endless loop! CHAPTER 1 Because Steve said damn him. God heard it! He wanted to condemn Redbeard therefore Steve was punished. Excellently made, exciting and funny comic! I had a lot of fun reading it. It even has 2 Matrix action scenes. For all those who are sad about the end of the story. CHAPTER 9, when Steve sees the logbook the next time in the cave, it will be the turning point of the story in reality. He will remember his endless loop again and change history. The ghost will be outwitted. Steve will use the ritual sword to kill the snake and free Redbeard. The endless loop ends! Afterwards, the treasure is loaded onto the double outrigger canoe and the two sail into the sunset. The ghost must stay on the island for eternity and because the treasure is gone, he can no longer tempt anyone to do evil deeds. The parrot will also leave the island with them. That's pretty good NOD, and I thank you for your feedback! I had something similar on my mind, with only difference, after the sunset they reach the Skull's Eye Schooner, where Steve (after some initial doubts) embraces the pirate life and accepts the offered quartermaster position. And then the real adventure begins. As to the question How did Steve get in the loop in the first place? , I think that on his very first visit on the Island he took some gold from the cave and sailed away into the night, where a vicious tempest capsized his raft and he drowned under the weight of the gold. Next thing he knows, he wakes up on the raft near the Island and the loop begins. But here's the catch. Every time he vaguely remembers little more and little more... but the question is, can he remember enough to save Redbeard and get away, or will he eventually slip and free Apparition from the underground? Who knows? I certainly don't.
Andy-Roo 36 posts Posted August 29 Excellent build, story and craftsmanship! I like the modular nature to the build and the attention to detail especially when it comes to playability. Everything was used in the story which helped highlight the build. The only thing that would be nice to see is some additional texturing of the grass plates and the floor of the caves to match the level of detail of the rest of the set. Great job all around! Marooned Marin 1750 posts Posted September 17 (edited) Thank you @The Undo ______________________________________ DOWNLOAD FULL COMIC IN PDF HERE After being rejected on LEGO Ideas, since Islander's Island overlaps with prohibited Pirates Bay/Ship Island concept (although I'm not sure how in this case) I decided to give Tapu Island a run in the upcoming Bricklink Designer Program - Series 6. Unlike LEGO Ideas, BDP-program comes with somewhat strict framework regarding the parts and minifigures used. In a nutshell, designers are allowed to use only parts and minifigures which are in production, or will be in the near future. In my case this means: no Islander minifigures, no Pirates minifigures, no cloth sails! Besides that I was required to replace some plates and bricks which do exists now but their production, in that particular colour, came to an end. For instance, wedge plate in medium azure I needed to change to regular square plate etc... Not to go any deeper in that matter, you can read more about parts and BDP-series inside this blog-post on Classic-Pirates.com. CHANGES TO THE ORIGINAL DESIGN Instead of Islander's canoe the raft is added, with plastic sails (no cloths are allowed) New two characters, Lighthouse keeper Steve (Infamous Steve great great grandson) and Willy (his grandson). New 50-pages to the original story which explains in detail the newer version of the Island, and two new characters. (see prologue, and extra three chapters at the end) Apparition was transformed into black skeleton, but is still the main villain of the story. NEW DESIGN YOUTUBE VIDEO STORY SYNOPSIS After reading a scary Pirate story about the local “allegedly cursed” island, grandpa and his grandson indulge in some harmless pirate role-play on the very same island. All the fun and play came to an end when a violent storm broke out and forced two wannabe pirates to take shelter inside a dark and perilous island’s cave. NOD 1751 posts Posted September 20 Good decision to participate in the BrickLink Designer Program Series 6. I support you when the voting phase comes Great addition to the Comic. Steve and Willy the descendants are a good idea. At the same time, it also included the hint that Steve's ancestor escaped the endless loop ("Your bloodline escaped me once.").
