Hello, I’m AltBrickitect, but you may call me AB. After many years away from Lego building, I’m now adding Lego Technic alternative model/MOC creation as one of my hobbies.

I'm still searching online for Lego Technic communities, but Eurobricks seems to be where the main party is taking place, so I'll use this topic to share whatever designs I come up with.

I currently have mostly vintage sets from my youth, the 2544, 8229, 8230, 8428, 8277, and 8880. I’m looking to get a few modern sets and start designing some alternative models. So far, I bought the set 42049 and created 2 MOCs from it. I also just acquired the 42140, so you can expect alternative models for it as well.

Here's my first creation, a Telehandler as an alternative model for the Mine Loader set 42049. Building instructions are available at rebrickable, as well as more photos.

Features:
- Openable cabin door
- Openable engine compartment
- Functional fake engine
- Hand of God steering
- Outriggers
- Boom lift
- Boom extension
- Attachment/forks tilt
- Forks adjustment

Please let me know what you think of it as all feedback is very valuable to me at this point.

Welcome to the forum.

This is very nicely done, I love the level of detail in it.

Thank you for the support. I tried to make the most out of the set's inventory and pack as many functions as possible with this model.

Thank you. Yes, I didn't mention it anywhere because anyone can just watch the video and realize that the boom can be lifted with precision and stop at any height and stay there effortlessly.

Hello, AB reporting my second creation: a remote-controlled replica of the "Rodine Runner" using the inventory from the Mine Loader set 42049 and a few Power Functions components. No additional parts needed.
Building instructions are available at rebrickable, as well as more photos.
800x184.jpg

"Rodine Runner" is the nickname of an actual vehicle that was owned and raced in the USA by a man named Bob Rodine in the 80s. Here are the only 3 photos I could find online. I placed them side by side with my MOC in the same perspective and style for comparison:
800x308.jpg
800x196.jpg

800x214.jpg

Quick note:
I couldn’t replicate a few details properly because of inventory limitations. For example, the metal structures on the sides (there aren’t any angled connectors on this set); the original wheels and tires are of different sizes, but the ones available on the set are all the same size; suspension is absent on the replica as there are no pieces to allow such functionality; and the overall proportions are similar, but not exact, otherwise there wouldn’t be enough parts to complete the model.

Development process:

Check my workbench for that.

Functions:
- Remote-controlled steering
- Remote-controlled rear-wheel drive with a gear ratio of 1:1.67
600x169.jpg

Worth mentioning aspects:
- Although not required in the parts list, you will need a Power Functions controller.
- Steps for cable management are included in the building instructions.
- Decent ground clearance combined with a solid rear axle for off-roading.
- The top of the model can be easily opened to reach the battery pack.

My third creation:
Rebuild the Lego Technic “Transformation Vehicle” set 42140 into the “Johnny 5” robot from the 1986 “Short Circuit” movie!
Building instructions, additional info and pictures are available at https://reb.li/m/191205

Here’s a picture showing my Lego Technic replica side-by-side with the original model, both in the same pose for easier comparison.
745x450.jpg

Features / Worth mentioning aspects:
- The tracks are remote-controlled. You can use the original Control+ profile for the 42140 set, but I also included instructions for a custom Powered Up app profile if you prefer.
- Shoulders, arms and forearms have a wide range of movement, the fingers also move. You can manually place them any way you want for different poses.
- The neck articulates back and forth, up and down.
- The head rotates 360º and can also tilt sideways.
- You can place the laser weapon vertically on the back.
- The support wheel in the rear rotates freely and always provides support for stability.
- No extra parts needed. If you have the 42140 set, then you have all you need to build it!

Very cool and very well presented.

Thank you.

Am I doing things right? Seems this topic isn't generating much interaction from other users, or maybe everyone else is just focused on new sets coming out. I was expecting to have a nice conversation here.

For a long time that I wanted to create something out of the 42111 set, so I finally went for it. In my first attempt, I thought designing a Caterham 7 could be possible, but quickly ran into issues with the inventory trying to replicate all of the real car's angles and curves and it resulted in a failed MOC.

455263437_122122607474365544_12900686152455414492_122122607498365544_76631450593
I was able to design the front with functional steering and independent suspension, the wheels also had mudguards that turned with them. The headlights were also in place. Prototypes for the exhaust and rear mudguards were also created at this point.

Caterham Seven for reference

In spite of this first failed attempt, I haven't given up and my next alternative model will be for the 42111 set.
I know there are a couple of hot rods already, but I will make my own version to help familiarize myself with the parts inventory.

Stay tuned!

My newest creation is a classy Hot Rod alternative model for the Dom's Dodge Charger set 42111!
📘 Building instructions: https://reb.li/m/193667

Here’s a picture showing a real Hot Rod that served as inspiration, and my MOC version, side by side:
800x211.jpg

Worth mentioning features or details:
-Openable doors
-Hand of God steering
-Independent front suspension
-Live axle rear suspension
-Functional fake engine connected to the rear wheels via a differential
-Aside from all the visible exterior details, it also has a modelled interior (all details are purely aesthetic) with an adjustable driver’s seat, an adjustable steering wheel (with two red buttons for nitro), a very basic dashboard, a gear lever and two nitro bottles on the passenger side. The interior is also almost fully closed, with very few gaps remaining.
-The build process doesn't have any fancy techniques, but a few pieces are used in interesting ways ;)

Once again a great alternate build, and in my humble opinion better looking than the original. I get a smell of smoke and burnt rubber by simply looking at the photos!

Really like your 42049 telehandler aswell, great alternate use of the turntable there!

Thanks, I appreciate the support. Maybe I'll do another one for this set as this MOC is being very well received. Stay tuned.
