But in that second picture, where generator is lifted, there is no gap. So it is really confusing. Maybe that's also some preproduction model, maybe they made prototype for new bucket, but then decided for optimised version, using two "narrow" bucket combination.

Volvo may have a bucket available with a center reinforcement plate but this picture shows a bucket without one:

I'm sure some interns are doing the post-processing at an external agency before the images go online at lego.com. There were cases where they removed the injection point from the middle of the UCS plaques. People got excited and thought TLG finally made the pieces better, but it was just someone trying to "clean things up". I'm sure that's the case here as well.

OK people, can we please move on from the two bucket world problem? It's clear that it was a cost saving thing, just as the trailer was thinned out from the preliminary model. At the end of the day we can always replace the part with an existing older bucket.

This quote apparently comes from this page, but this doesn't seem to be the description of a Volvo PU500 unit. This thing is powered by a Volvo engine, but it's not the same thing. 

The power unit in the set made by Volvo is rather this one, which is essentially a huge external battery to charge the Excavator, so it is not a generator after all.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I really like this set. 

My only minor issue is the single rear axle on the truck with the small 49.5x14 tires. Wish TLG would've gone with either a dual rear axle or at least 56mm tires on the truck. Same with the small tires on the trailer.

And we power it with diesel...

I once stopped in France along the Peage (highway) and noticed an electric car loading thingy....
In the meadow behind it stood a 20Ft container...with a diesel generator

Technic Powered Up can't fit entirely inside it, minimum is 9x12x5 for the hub and motor, you'd need at least the bottom face to be replaced with a side of the hub.  Possibly one of the ends also needs to expose the motor, not sure the thinnest option for attaching it to the pump.  Other system smaller battery boxes are a lot easier, 5x4x8 city hub makes a lot of free space.

Actually, it can make sense. An ICE is used to generate electricity, and the car can have a fully electric drivetrain, which has advantages; less mechanical complexity, motors can be placed near the wheels, precise wheel speed control, better acceleration, etc. At the same time, the ICE can be smaller, can run with a steady RPM in a range at which it is most efficient, instead of running in bursts. May even result in less consumption altogether, if there's not much loss of efficiency in the transformation to electricity. I guess it's the same story with electric machinery and diesel generators and power plants generating electricity from fossil fuels. It can matter how/where you burn that fossil fuel. And later, when we have cleaner power plants, the transition will become easier.

Unluckily this bucket has got the connection points at a very different position than an excavator bucket, it would rotate with a wrong pivot. Should add some liftarms to create the connection points at the correct position.
