Well... I like city subthemes. I bought CITY/space sets (2022). Then CITY/Exploration sets (2023). Next year (2024) I will buy all CITY/space sets.

Arctic, Deep Sea Exploration, Jungle, Volcano, Wild Life Rescue... maybe I forgot some of those. I also like action/adventure themes. I just bought that Indiana Jones set, temple with a Golden Idol treasure.

...

Problem with CITY is that it takes so many subthemes for themself. SPACE should be own theme. ALL SPACE RELATED sets. City repeats year after year same things. I would like to see something like lets say... ZOO. And I mean a zoo from maybe 10 different sets. Part count, total could be 10K. ... there would be all African animals BUT also under sea section where tourist could look fish, shark, so on behind glass. It would be also a ZOO island... with rock, trees and a little bit of sea.

@legoturtle LOL! You're going to the City theme for the stuff that isn't city themed.

My bad for laughing.

They are the best 2024 City sets for some people, I like them a lot too (but I also like some other sets), and City is the place for minifig non-licensed space these days, outside of some 1 at most per year Creator 3-in-1, or Icons.

City had space sets available the whole time from 2019 to 2024 (probably until at least retiring December 31 2025 would be my guess and then perhaps new ones) , which is by far the longest running non-stop subtheme City had outside of the actual City, and even had more sets then something like Hospitals or Ambulances , which did get a lot more attention in recent years.

I can understand if people who have been collecting City for longer, already have seen all the Police , Fire and Medic stuff, or gotten Food  / Racing related sets from the many that have released, so this space wave is pretty much the "new" stuff.

And believe it or not ,some people go to Friends theme for buildings and remove minidolls and put minifigs into them. (I don't, but have read it a few times)

As for me personally, until the changes around 2021-2023 (especially 2023), I collected a lot more Creator 3-in-1 buildings , because City did not have them (unless you wanted those big downtown sets with loads of vehicles), for years, a City without a City (beside Police and Fire stations)

Also I don't really look what theme is on the box, for many years, many themes have been compatible, or provided interesting vehicles and buildings.

Looks like we’re heading to the jungle in the summer!

Personally the jungle and volcano explorer sets are tied as my personal favourite city line, and the only sub themes I got all sets from (minus the giant jungle helicopter, I still need that!) so I’m so happy to see jungle back. Obviously space is probably gonna dethrone those 2 but maybe summer will bring it back. To this day that jungle mobile lab truck is my favourite city set. I can’t wait to see what the team give us.

A jungle theme with new animals is really good in my eyes since I started collecting them a ton, but another thing I wanna see from the summer wave is a full go-kart arena to go with that $10 set we're getting next year

I think there will be at least six sets for the jungle series.

I can't wait to hear more about these! I'm sure there will be the usual price range from the past few years of animal subthemes; really hoping for another good $10 "battle pack" :)

CITY should make SUBTHEMES more clear. Like now Space and then maybe Exploration. Jungle exploration sets, nice... if you look Brickset database, we have these subthemes:

CITY/SUBTHEMES since 2005-

Arctic 10, 8

Deep Sea Explorers 6, 5

Exploration 5

Jungle 10

Volcano Explorers 8

Wildlife Rescue 5

Space 5, 5, 4

(Mars Exploration) 9

... AND now even more space sets and Jungle Exploration in 2024.

I doubt there will be another subtheme, but there could always be structures/locations as standalone sets with the way things are going.

2023 has a Ski ramp / Climbing center for example, I can imagine something like a Marina being a standalone set as well (based on the sailboat set, and water police)

You joke, but I would love this!

If LEGO releases a set of an UFO abducting a cow, I will be making queue in the store two days before

So I saw the back of the burger truck box. Turns out the serving area on the truck can be removed to make a stationary burger joint. That's kinda neat and pretty clever.

I would have much preferred just the burger joint without the truck part.

It could've been that maybe it was designed being a 8x8 shop already, and given the empty tiles with jumper area in 60380: Downtown, perhaps meant to go with that, as it's a food shop district.

I still think it's a better set then 60214: Burger Bar Fire Rescue, even with the truck part, it costs less as it does not come with all the fire stuff. (that set was $40 in the US, this is $20)

And a burger shaped truck would look weird too, but works well for hotdog in 42633: Hot Dog Food Truck (4+ but still a decent looking set)

A standalone shop like 41349: Drifting Diner would've been nice as well, on a 8x16 or 16x16 (or the corner variant)

That said, I wonder if that whole 8x8 and 8x16 system even continues, as those 2-plate thick plates are not even seen in any of the 2024 lineup, and even 42632: Farm Animal Vet Clinic went back to the old 4+ variant instead. (a lot of extra 1x4 parts were needed to fill it up)

Maybe we see those wild life rescue animals in upcoming CITY/Jungle sets... or even some kind of temple - like in Indiana Jones franchise.

I dunno, I feel like it was probably intended as a food truck from the get-go, considering that like many small/low-priced City sets, it's part of the City "Great Vehicles" range. The ability to separate it into a flatbed truck and freestanding kiosk seems to me like something that would be included to help set it apart from past food truck sets, and to make up for the relative lack of play features compared to other sets its size.

I definitely agree that it'd pair really nicely with the Downtown set, though!

I doubt they'd sell a small burger kiosk like this as a stand-alone set, because as mentioned, it's pretty light on "play features" (whereas adding a vehicle at least gives kids something to zoom around). Even if it hadn't been done as a "food truck", it still probably would have had to be coupled with at least one additional vehicle build and possibly other building/scenery builds, like how Picnic in the Park and Beach Lifeguard Station each came with two small vehicles or the Chicken Henhouse came with an ATV.

On a separate note, one bit of disappointment I have with this wave of City sets is that there's no sets featuring either the road system we've seen over the past few years or the customization-friendly modular building system we saw so much of this year. But I figure that's partly just because the January wave is so vehicle-heavy (and many of the permanent structures like the Prison Island and Crooks' Hideout are remote/isolated with no connections to the rest of town by land). Hopefully just like this year, there will be plenty of both systems in the summer wave!

Yeah, so far the only "modularity" I've seen is the crooks hideout with technic pins, and then the Prison and Fire Stations could possibly split up in the middle as there's a "seam"

Of course the modularity is very focused in the Space sets this time, allowing big expansion, even with sets from 2 older waves of City Space (and some 2020 underwater even)

Along with what @TeriXeri said, some of the vehicles may also be too big for the road plates as well such as the mobile unit. I don't really like how they executed that one as it looks like something made by Hotwheels compared to a Lego City set.

To be honest I was looking at that one in detail earlier and was more impressed with it than I expected—it's really neat how seamlessly it seems to be when closed but has a lot of interior detail when opened, almost like an evolution of some sets I've been fond of in less "realistic" themes like the Agents mobile base. It's definitely chunkier than a lot of City vehicles but it seems to use that space really well.

Some other details I noticed were that the pink haired crook is probably meant to be some sort of hacker judging by her flash drive necklace, and that the new lattice pieces used for chain link fences seem to have bar connections on either side if you want to use them in a way that doesn't include the door/window frame (which excites the MOCist in me).
