MOC: Swedish Class S1 2-6-4T (with local train) in 1/32.5 scale – update: now with video

Lovely looking SJ Littera S1 class!

Question, where do you find the main dimensions? Those seem to be a bit hard to find sometimes.

Thank you @Shiva!

That's different, depending on the specific prototype.
Sometimes, especially for German prototypes, it's just sufficient to take a book from my collection and look up drawings and dimensions there.
For Swedish locomotives, the Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle has digitalized large parts of its collections and made them publicly available on the web; this includes data sheets of steam locomotives as well:
http://samlingsportalen.se/digitalt_arkiv/jvm/rullande_materiel/sj_sartryck_262/sj_sartryck_262_1955_web.pdf

Similar webpages exist for Italian locomotives:
https://www.archiviofondazionefs.it/en/Archivio-Servizio-Materiale-e-Trazione/rs/dc645a1f203c2dd8b95ad43be5177b1c1ebf93a0/rsDataSource

And then there's the digital archive of the magazine "Die Lokomotive", a real treasure chest:
https://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno-plus?aid=lok

But sometimes, you simply have to search the web for hours and hours until you find something...

Again, a spectacular locomotive, with a tremendous attention to details which makes me wonder every time you propose your MOCs. *huh*

I can only imagine the study and work (and time) you put behind these creations to make them so beautiful, realistic, refined and I'd say "complete" since you are also adding complementary things like that nice Saab!

Great, great, GREAT Sven!!!

Ciao!

Davide

At the moment, I'm tinkering with another "complementary thing", this time a Volvo ... stay tuned.

Just for fun, I've made a side-by-side comparison of my two Swedish steam locomotives.
It's obvious how especially the valve gear design has significantly improved over the past 6 years ... But the S1 is also much more advanced in terms of building techniques (e.g. the SNOT-work for the rear tank with its curved edges) and chassis design.
And, of course, the S1 is the much more elegant engine.

Both are elegant designs. The valve gear advancements are nice, but both are quite sophisticated.

I will disagree with your final statement. I like the lines of the M3a (LEGO side view) better.

I tried to guess - I have three Volvo models in mind, all of them are classics:

  • one of them was a successful rally car of the 60s (so a good pair with the 96).
  • the second one is also from the 60s and was driven by a somehow "holy" pilot.
  • one is from the 70s, and it's the model that started the modern Volvo concept

Let's see If I guessed something right!!!

P.s.  Erik wants the Saab parked as he used to do...(pa taket!) :excited::laugh_hard:

Ciao Sven!

@Paperinik77pk Hi Davide,

No, none of these Volvos ... even better, I dare say.
But be patient .,. I've just started to check what parts I'd have to order.

Oh no, you don't do that with blue Saabs. Only with red ones.

I guess it'll be a PV 444 (or the updated PV 544).

Amazon is probably my personal Volvo design favourite but I'd guess those lines are more difficult to catch in such limited scale.

I've seen something elsewhere (in Deutsch) but in what scale 1:32 or 1:38 (L-gauge)?

It will be wonderful I'm sure

No PV 444/544 ("Buckelvolvo" - "hunchback Volvo" as they are called in Germany), no Amazon, I'm sorry.

1:32, of course, matching my other Swedish models.

Sven J, thank you for the links!

I wish someday, to maybe make a locomotive in 1:38 or 1:45 scale. Wishlist on that, is a M3t. https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3t And M3b https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3b They both are related to each other, if that is the right word.

Unless there is one already done, somewhere. I have never! built a steam locomotive and the only train I have built, is LEGo's crocodile.

Both your locomotives look great! I might later this week, or in a few weeks, again visit a M3a locomotive, IRL. Depending on weather and sleep.

Ok, that's a bit difficult. Since these are no SJ locomotives, they aren't listed in "Särtryck 262".
I just looked up in my book about TGOJ rolling stock (Sundström/Frederiksson: TGOJ lok och vagnar, Stenvalls förlag 2016), but there also aren't any drawings of M3b or M3t.
You might try to search in the "Järnvägshistoriskt forum", I found the drawings for my M3a there years ago.

I do have found 2 drawings on the net, 1 is https://www.jarnvagsmuseet.se/globalassets/jarnvagsmuseet/bilder/fordjupning/arsbok/spar1991.pdf page 7.

One that would be more detailed, but can not make out any of the numbers, at all

And then there is from this h0 forum https://www.motessparet.se/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1636&sid=e500d916efef370fc7b4b8383b09e56f&start=240

Main wheel size is between the S1 and M3a, you have built. 1350mm,

Oh, maybe the more detailed is from https://www.schienendampf.com/forum/thread/2732-schwedische-dampfturbinenlokomotive-tgoj-m3t/

Your presentations are so well done, that I almost have a feeling that I am building your models. I learn a lot of techniques here! thank you!

After a VERY long time, the video is online!

I'm quite amazed about how much power that little locomotive has. With the BuWizz in "Normal" mode, it hauls the train at around 60 km/h, and there's also "Fast" and "Ludicrous" - but they don't work in my oval, because the locomotive is taken out of the curve at these speeds...

Hi Sven

I've already seen your movie elsewhere but it's always nice to watch again a great director at work
