[TC22] Side Boom Pipe Layer

51998222742_e7a8be656c_k.jpgIMG_8582 by Doug Ridgway, on Flickr

Early build to determine if fits within 10.000 cubic studs

At present using 3L wide track links it is 7752 cubic studs with with boom fully retracted.

Drivers cabin will be on the left facing the boom with engine housing on the right hand side.

All functions will be manual control for:-

1/. Altering the angle of the boom.

2/. Raising and lower the hook which will have an attachment to grip the pipe being installed.

Ideally the tracks should be wider but I have run out of the small track links.

Will have use the tracks from the 42121 heavy duty digger I built recently.

OR upsize and use 5L wide tracks & use the small 6 notch sprocket wheels to give 9386 Cubic Studs.

This will also  allow for a higher boom.

More progress to follow.

I think that if you increase the total size the tracks will fit even better. I agree with you in the manual functions, in this scales all the electric components will became ugly the MOC and they would need too much room.

Thanks for your comments

Agree he wider tracks, might be able to fit a M motor & small battery box & a PF R in the engine housing as these machines spends lot of time moving along the route of the pipeline being laid.

Very interesting, already for its parts usage. I didn't even know these parts (TECHNIC bricks at the top of the boom and the boom itself) existed. Thanks for sharing!

Pretty original machine for entry.

Yes, those top parts are also soemthing new for me. What exactly those are?

Is the universal joint going into the actuator working well at that extreme angle?

YES its no problem as its manual drive & able to retrack the boom until almost vertical.

Using three gears instead might indeed be the better solution, but maybe they would rub on the tracks.

Technic Brick

How it is connected to top? Won't it fall off under a load?

So far no problem , there are 2 studs on the top of the boom.

Creative design so far. Are you going with the bulldozer type body or the excavator type body?

It will be a bulldozer body type,

Correct the gears could catch on the track,

[TC22] Side Boom Pipe Layer Mk 1

Progress Update.

52000897267_1f3910889c_c.jpgIMG_8586

Now fitted with double tracks using 3L track links. Boom  length increased by 2L

The two belts of track links each side tend to catch and separate.

Position of manual drives for boom & cable drum repositioned to be more accessible.

Learnt a lot building the Mk 1 version so decided to re-build with 5L track links.

————————————————————————————

[TC22] Improved Mark 2 Side Boom Pipe Layer.

52002431475_cfc36b87c6_c.jpgIMG_8590

New under carriage  built using  5L track links and have managed to get good track tension and support between the sprocket gears.

Hoist Drum re-located and hand operated by the 12T DBG gear as shown.

Boom drive to linear actuator.
Uni coupling replaced by 3 12t gears & operated by hand. Boom  length increased by 6L

Next step build the body work & cabin for the driver & dummy engine housing.

Tracks are hand powered by pushing but it may be possible to add an M motor / PF Rx & a small battery box.

Inclined to agree with you, model with 5L track links is begining to get very chunky and hard to stay within the 10,000 cu studs rule.

I can easily revert to the Mk 1 version.

I like the first tracks a little better as well. I started going deep into the internet about these machines, and they are pretty neat. Are you going to do a moveable counterweight on the right side of the tractor as well?

Thanks, I have yet to figure out mounting the counter weight but it should be possibly & could use an empty small battery box.

I should have enough cubic studs spare .

First tracks fitted better in my opinion, too.

But so cool to see this machine made :-)

Progress :-

Counterweight added:- Manually operated and swung out into operating position.

Counterweight stowed by hand to keep within Cubic Studs limit when not operating.

52004155918_af770c75d4_z.jpgIMG_8593

Drive to boom linear actuator altered so manual controls are now situated equally at rear of machine.

Hoisting rope altered to pass under the stowed counterweight.

Drivers cabin added (ex Lego train)

Next step, build the engine housing.

MK 1 version Progress:-

Drivers Cabin:- Lego train part removed as it is too big at 6 x 6 x 8 studs.

Rebuilt Engine housing installed 6 x 8 x 5L but still too large.

A smaller engine compartment at 6 x 6 x 5 looks better

52010138756_2e7d84d7d4_z.jpgIMG_8597

Drivers control cabin built and is supported by 4 swinging arms so the cabin can be raised to working position or lowered to the stowed position.

Just need to find a suitable ladder to allow access to the cabin.

With boom vertical, Counterweight & Drivers cabin stowed inboard =  30 high x 20 Long x 16.5 wide = 9900 cubic studs & within the contest rule.

This is awesome. The only thing I could suggest is that maybe you could make the box on the right side with technic panels instead of system bricks to be further away from model team approach.

Thanks for the sugestion, but its very hard to represent an engine using only Technic parts and would use up my Cubic Studs.

Perhaps Jim can rule on this.

Engine Housing:- Does this look OK, it’s 100% Lego Technic..

I only have Red curved panels. Model Cubic Studs = 9900.

Photo now embeded :-

The weird part is that it sticks too much outside from the bottom outline. I'm not sure, but maybe you should angle the motor with some gearing so it is along the edge instead (if there's an actual engine on the inside?

Also can you share some photos from different angles and maybe a reference photo of the exact machine you're basing your model off?
