42141 - McLaren Formula 1™ Race Car

Recommended Posts

It looks okay but still not quite right and a bit messy in some places. The front wing is completely wrong, there’s two panels sticking out of the side, most of the part between the halo and spoiler is too wide.

Other than that it looks better than the official set imo.

Aparte from the livery, I like the official set.

It could be worse, we could have gotten a full pink Alpine...

Pink would be an aweseme and a very bold color for Technic IMO, especially in the combination with the purple.

Anyway, back on topic, I can't wait to get this set and motorize it, already tinkered digitally and should be able to fit at least 2 drive and 1 steering motor alonged with the new diff and stronger CV joints.

Sariels and Balages reviews are out, nice parts, not-so-nice technic set :-)

And definitely not a 2022 McLaren F1 car... extra points if you can find all the differences between the mule in the manual and the real F1 car revealed last week :)

Oh boy, I've considered builds like this before but never physically tried it as I thought it wouldn't fit. Turns out it's actually legal!

9398 and many other sets used this technique. It's totally okay.

So, I guess after this, the John Deere, and the CAT, we can assume that any color-locking rule on the O-frame has been overruled, and we can expect to get it in any color Lego happens to need.

Also, I kind of want to get my hands on one of the DELL stickers from this set to put on my laptop!

I have to admit I still like the McLaren. I’m an F1 fan, a Technic fan and also at the upper age group and I can see this selling well. It looks like an F1 car and will look great on a shelf. I don’t care about the lack of functions as the ones on 42000 are pretty rubbish in my opinion (I don’t need hog and bodywork doesn’t open like that). I’m aware this is a car based off the generic 2022 design but we were never going to get the actual 2022 car, especially as we won’t see the actual 2022 cars until the 1st race which is still a number of weeks away. Yes I know pre season shakedown is on at the moment but car designs may still change. Also I don’t care it’s got the 2021 colour scheme (which is a great colour scheme) as again the 2022 colours and sponsors would have been kept a secret until the reveal of the real car.

let’s just appreciate this in the same mould as the Porsche RSR and Ferrari

oh and I know a few other f1 fans who aren’t big Lego collectors that will be buying this so I think it’ll sell well

Good review of the empty shell! I think that's the main issue with this set for me as I can't see me wanting it even if it was closer to the 2022 car. I know they have their price limitations but I wonder if this could have been done (still with the F1 style suspension) in a smaller, denser scale, leaving some budget for printed tyres and HOG steering. These large and mostly empty sets give me similar vibes to the large, empty, big in size but small on functions cat/helicopter/submarine thing from the late 90s! But then I can imagine some casual buyers thinking "oh wow, that's huge, and it only costs this much!". It sort of reemphasizes the "18+ is only for casuals, not us" idea. But this feels much more true for Technic, as other themes have had the Titanic and a few other great sets, that have some pull for both casuals and hard core fans alike. So far this hardcore Technic fan of over 30 years hasn't purchased a single 18+ Technic set. But I do have very high hopes for the 2nd half Technic sets that mostly won't be 18+. Whilst there is surely sound reasoning behind wanting to bring in more casuals, why not do so in a way that doesn't leave behind the hard core fans? Is this intentional from TLG when it comes to Technic? I of course can only speak for myself, but I do get the sense I'm not alone in my feelings.

Also for other themes it feels less like the 18+ sets are taking away the space for other sets. But Technic is a rather small theme.

Me too. No 18+ sets, no Control+ sets for me yet.

You are definitely not alone. The pure essence of Lego Technic I find these days is in this forum. Anyone who used to build Lego in the 80s 90s (or even earlier) will definitely share this feeling. Lego's welcoming casual builders is fine, but....fact is...a large number of them should be building Duplo's, not Technic. Then there are also people who build it and rebuild it, showcase it, and...don't care about the functional reliabilities. Heavily emphasized Technic sets are largely primarily becoming display sets. Whatever this business/survival/sustainability stuffs are played by/with Lego I honestly think to use/build Technic someone has to be a bit smarter. Of course we all are human, we will make mistakes, but not to the extent so that a set's instruction manual will (eventually) become a Harry Potter sized fat book. I have not yet got  any 18+ set mainly because they have not made me so obsessed (out of the box).  A 8868 is still my top priority than to grab any C+ set, but I am always open for positivity's regarding Powered UP components and the C+ system.
The F1 does look good though (minus the wheel and its covers).

I am perfectly in agreement with you. Having built technic sets since the early 1990s, it is evident that the lego group has occasional builders in mind. Instructions that are increasingly simple to follow, sets that are aesthetically beautiful but lacking in functionality.

You do understand that technic exists by the grace of large numbers of people actually buying the sets, right?

Lego can develop and produce sets at this price level because they sell them by the literal millions.

A specialised set developed just for the 'advanced' builders you apparently count yourself as would cost double or triple their current price, if they were developed at all.

So do your advanced building and make a better model yourself. Unless you can't work without instructions, I guess.

I, for one, vote with my wallet and won't buy these empty shell-shelf queens. But I will buy sets that I think are proper Technic, like the Tow truck and the new ATV.

The empty shell-sets like the McLaren often contain new interesting parts, but in those cases I buy the new parts from B&P or Bricklink, as that way I'll get exactly what I want and nothing else.

I advise others to do the same - buy only sets that you think are genuinely good, and if you only want specific parts, get them elsewhere.

All of the new parts and recolors are available on Bricks & Pieces. Unlucky for the countries where LEGO has merged PaB with B&P, because they're not on PaB...

We Lego must have some idea on what the world wants as the F1 has sold out in the UK already in most locations.

Yeah have mixed feelings about this merge atm its a bit easier to navigate but stuff is not there and it doesn't show out of stock items like before which is annoying

Second that. Very perfect advice to everyone. I will stick to what I've said and will definitely  not agree with that survival cost concerned supporting views to what the quoted reply is made.

I haven’t bought one yet but as someone says it’s now out of stock in the U.K. whereas the Star Wars Helmets are all still in stock as of me writing this. So for all those complaining it’s just an empty shell, it’s an empty shell that’s selling well! Fingers crossed they have some back in stock for the end of May when it’s my birthday

Yeah, well, I don't really complain as long as a) proper Technic sets keep getting released and b) they introduce nice new parts with these empty shells.
