LEGO Star Wars 2022 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!

Recommended Posts

HBS: We don't like to release sets with exclusive figures in them, especially sets with a high price point.

TLG: Releases an exclusive Geonosis Mace Windu that we know now will most likely never make it into another set. It was released in a set with a high price point.

I'll wait until I see how of the tank looks from the front and back but the sides look rough and the usage of the X-Wing cabin for the nose is... odd. 40$ does seem fair though given the figure selection and model size.

After additional examination this is definitely based off the Battlefront 2017 version rather than the OG Battlefront or Clone Wars Game versions which explains the completely flat sides.

I don’t mind the tank. Figures are excellent so I’ll buy it. Let’s wait for official pictures guys before opinions because the picture we have is far from flattering!

To be clear I don't care that the Gunship didn't have good/exclusive figs. I bought the model because it looks fantastic on display and that's why I've bought every UCS set I have but I don't understand why the same rules can't apply to all UCS models.

Because there aren't rules. What people think are rules are just patterns, which inevitably someday get broken. People here love to imagine all sorts of rules that LEGO must certainly be living by, but the reality is, LEGO can and will do whatever it wants, if and when the need suits them. How many times has someone here proclaimed that there is some rule that UCS sets or Ideas sets or super cheap sets or whatever absolutely positively cannot include new molds or new prints or new figs or this or that... all because it hasn't happened before... until someday, it happens. LEGO is constantly experimenting with a bazillion variables in all their products... minifig selection in UCS sets being just one of them. Some have 2 figs, some have 1, some have 7 or 24 or whatever. Some are desirable, some are not... all of which is incredibly subjective.

BUT now that I've had time to actually look at the fighter tank picture Mace seems to have dual molded arms. If that is the case then it's an absolute slap in the face to the Gunship model and entire mini-figure controversy from last year and shows TLG is incredibly tone-deaf.

Maybe wait a hot second to confirm whether this is actually the case. And again, getting better versions of figs in cheaper sets just makes them more accessible for those who want them (especially those of us that want multiples of figs). Locking super-desirable figs into super-expensive sets doesn't benefit anyone other than LEGO and some opportunistic scalpers on BrickLink.

The the minifig selection for the fighter tank is excellent, and regarding the buiild, is it strange I actually like how simplified it looks? It feels reminiscent of the design of Lego Star Wars sets from the 2000's and early 2010's and I really dig that. The price is okay, the minifigures alone make it worth it. Looking forward for more pics.

Also I think a lot of the reason the fighter tank's build may look weird to some people is because the hatch is wide open in the pic, when it's closed it looks like it will resemble the tank's shape a lot better.

Yes exactly my thoughts.

The Fighter Tank is definitely a big downgrade from the last one but I was already planning to get this for the figures alone. I can't tell if Mace actually has dual-molded arms or if it's just the lighting playing tricks but if it's the former then he is much more exciting than I expected. The 187th figures look fantastic and It's always nice to get more battle droids. I am a little disappointed the tank doesn't have purple markings but then again, not all Clone units personalized their craft with their legion's colors.

I reckon it’s true! It would make sense since this is a tcw set and it would keep gunship Mace exclusive. I’m so hyped for this set now!!!

Interestingly, it looks like the battle droids have silver blasters. Only other time that’s happened (I think) was the phantom menace battle droid from the 2020 advent calendar. Maybe it’s cuz this is a 2003 tcw set? Or maybe all tcw battle droids will have silver blasters now? Or maybe all battle droids?

Yes definitely is arm printing. Makes the set even better!

I think once we see the tank properly people will appreciate it more for sure.

The high res picture definitely makes it clear that Mace has detailing on his arms. This is most surprising in such a small set. I am probably satisfied with my old Mace minifig, and will likely only pick up one of the purple clones, but good on Lego for pushing for more detailed minifigs. This bodes well for the future!

Where are you seeing the high res picture?

Artoo does have back printing - it wasn't just a dream!

And C-3PO's got arm printing, that's nice to see!

It must be exhausting, casting yourself the victim time and time again.

This style of thinking really gets on my nerves, especially when it's for something as absurd as lego not making the minifigure/set/whatever that you want.

However to address your second point of figs being exclusive for a while and then made widely available that's not something I'm opposed to BUT now that I've had time to actually look at the fighter tank picture Mace seems to have dual molded arms. If that is the case then it's an absolute slap in the face to the Gunship model and entire mini-figure controversy from last year and shows TLG is incredibly tone-deaf.

Isn't it a better figure with the dual molded arms? This is like if pilot Luke got dual molded boots in a set this year, and people acted like it's a "slap in the face" that it wasn't in the AT-AT. And honestly, "slap in the face"? "tone-deaf?" It's plastic toys, man, it's not worth getting this self-indignantly upset over.

I'll wait for better images of the tank, but I'm torn. The purple clones (people are calling them lean troopers, thanos troopers, grimace troopers, etc) are fine, though canon ones would have been better IMO. Mace looks awesome though. Not a fan of the tank itself, though, so I might not get the set. I'll reserve judgement until we see better images, but it seems like a downgrade from the 2017 and even 2008 models. On the other hand, that x-wing canopy is INSPIRED.

Couldnt they have knocked off $5 and removed the clankers! I would have been happy with no droids. Lego keeps pulling at me with moderately priced sets with interesting figs. The last two years I have found myself buying several sets just for the figs, while the pieces end up in drawers or MOCS!

How about a CMF wave and save me some $$$

Huh, upon closer inspection, I think it’s printed on, and not dual molded. That’s actually more accurate.

In any case, I’m swinging between this set being awful and fantastic, so I suppose I’m just gonna wait for more photos.

The Republic tank is a dream come true (mostly because of the figure selection) but this is my favourite rendition of the Republic Tank too.

$40 is unfair though. This set has less pieces than the 501st battle pack yet it's an extra $40, that's not good enough. I will be waiting for discounts. Before anyone shouts "Inflation!", LEGO achieved record profits last year.

I can understand a bad PPP here, it looks like it has a lot of large, expensive parts. Either way, its still way overpriced.

I think the set looks okay honestly? A lot of the hate towards it seems really overblown and hyperbolic but that's Star Wars fans for you I guess. The size of the tank is pretty good. The original one was too big and while the 2017 one (which I have) was probably the most accurate, it still felt very small. This one is right in the middle. I also see a lot of people complaining about how blocky it is? Maybe it's just me, but I kinda like having some blockiness in my Lego models. That's sort of the point of having a Lego model versus having a 1:1 recreation from some other brand.

I also liked the 2020 AAT for the record. I'm not sure if I want to army build this new Fighter Tank as much as that set though. I don't have as much need for a bunch of purple clone troopers, that haven't even shown up in canon yet, compared to the lone 332nd Trooper from the AAT. We also just see AATs far more than Republic Fighter Tanks but I still might still get a second one of this set just to have three of each.

As I said when the figures leaked, I think the purple clones are cool. As for the battle droids, who can't use more of those? I'm also really pleasantly surprised that the Mace Windu figure seems to be a TCW version with what appears to be the vambraces on his arms. That's awesome, I really hope we get a new version of Obi-Wan in his Clone Wars armor with that level of detailing, and maybe a color accurate version of Anakin's armor as well someday.

There are a number of comments, not necessarily here but on other forums, along the lines of "it's terrible, the worst set Lego has ever produced! Still gonna buy it for the figs". And TLG chalks up the sales and declares the model successful. Agree about the idea that a Lego model should look like Lego, otherwise why not buy something from Hasbro? It seems to be popular at the moment to want to disguise the actual 'lego-ness' in models e.g. completely tiled, not a single stud showing, and while it's impressive what can be achieved with Lego pieces, at the end of the day if my goal is to build something that isn't blocky, at least to some degree, than I'm possibly looking at the wrong product.

The tank looks good but I suspect it will be impossible to buy in Australia as Bruce Swift will probably end up with more copies than our entire country.

I agree that a lot of people have ridiculous complaints about the amount of studs on Lego sets, but the sets should at least try to have the proportions of the thing they’re trying to portray. The Republic Fighter Tank honestly looks exactly like something I would make as a 9 year old with my limited brick selection and limited design skills.

This is the equivalent of if Lego made a Death Star as an ovoid instead of a sphere. It doesn’t look like they were even trying. It would have been a hundred times better if they had just re-released the previous version.

The UCS Death Star II is an ovoid instead of a sphere. It's squashed vertically relative to the actual thing. And that's fine! It's still a perfectly good representation of the vehicle.

Everybody has the right to their opinions, but Jesus Christ. Y'all need to get some perspective. Saying this is the worst set we've had in years is nuts. The build doesn't look like much to write home about, but it's perfectly reasonable, and the figures are fantastic.

And I thought the Ninjago community was bad.

I hope we will be able to buy the 187th clone troopers in the LSW magazine so I buy en masse lmao.

I'm definitely going to wait for the *official* official reveal of the fighter tank before making judgement as I can tell that is not a flattering camera angle. I think it could have potential to look nice though, and it's good that you can fit two minifigures inside it again. The use of the X-Wing canopy piece is certainly interesting, even if it turns out to not really work.

Phase 2 Clones are Phase 2 Clones, and that's generally a net positive in my book. Can't complain about Lego throwing Battle Droids in too. Mace potentially being in his Clone Wars attire would certainly be welcome.

The Fighter Tank is one of those sets that looks just alright, but if I see it on sale I'll probably pick it up. The figs are pretty nice, though I still find it strange that they opted not to go with one of the more highly requested Clone legions.
