Wellesley Posted May 12, 2021 This is my first entry for the 11th Challenge "Strategic Outposts". ToJorin Farrensman Shipwright of Hvalfanghimr As the Crown was very pleased with your work the last years, it became clear there is great interest in expanding collaboration. The vessels ordered from your shipyard are serving Corrish interests and influence in the Eastern seas and collonies well. Yet for a lasting and efficient naval presence we can‘t afford to rely on shipyards in the old world. Therefore the admiralty developed plans to construct a Naval Resupply Complex in Wullham, including shipyards with launching slides and drydocks, warehouses for ropes, spiers, cannons and ammunition, provisions rations and drinking water. You hereby receive our official request to take administration of the shipyard and supervision on shipbuilding. Rear-Admiral FletcherCommander of the Royal Terra Novan Fleet Month later the first buildings of the new Naval Resupply Complex are standing. Officials are inspecting the progress and admire the soon to lauch Sailing Barge ‘Freya‘.
caiman0637 Posted May 12, 2021 Wow! Everything looks excellent, but what I'm most impressed by is those birds! Amazing!
evancelt Posted May 12, 2021 (edited) Nice work, @Wellesley! Based on your pictures and note on the Wullham settlement page, I am going to focus on the drydock/shipyard and immediate surroundings exclusively, and will not comment on the buildings. Thanks for choosing Wullham as a build location! I think this could work as a medium commerce - what do you think @Ayrlego? As a GoC build, it would be licensed by Corrington. I like how you have built the rolling waves with layered plates and wedges. The white caps there add some dynamicity. The round white pieces near the crashing shoreline are a cool technique! The brick-built sea birds and cannons add some fun and unusual details. The upside-down arches for the drydock bring some interesting textures because we can see into the inside of the bricks - great idea! The tan of the ground surrounding the drydock is pretty bare, and I'm actually glad for the line created by the joints of the large plates not lying flush with each other - the line adds some complexity to what would otherwise be a very large studded surface. The tiled light bley edging on the drydock looks great and contrasts well with the studded tan ground. As this build is mostly about the drydock, I'm not going to comment on the ship itself - but nice work there! Excellent initial rigging Great minifigs too. I'm a big fan of Corlander naval officers in blue. Some of the photos have non-LEGO parts of your room in the background that can be a bit distracting, but I think you make up for those photos by including plenty of other photos that don't. from me for GoC! It was fun to build them and I am pleased with the different seagull poses. Thanks @evancelt! It is always a challenge to make some good photos. Especially with bigger dioramas. Thus I also try to do some macro shots without non-Lego background. I'm glad the tan surface works. I wanted to keep it rather clean and simple, as it is supposed to be spacious and the workes have to move stuff around.
Kai NRG Posted May 13, 2021 Really nice build here, lots of interesting buildings, the green and black is a great combination and the yellow round base for the crane is super neat! The ships are neat too, but like caiman0637 said, the birds are really the star of the show--so many different poses but all and such a good use of little pieces! CapOnBOBS Posted May 13, 2021 Wonderful! I love the winch and mechanics of the drydock. Very colorful build too without losing any realism. Great work.
Thomas Waagenaar Posted May 13, 2021 Woah, this looks amazing! Every piece of it just fits in the grand picture! I especially love the sea gulls, so simple yet so good looking
Ross Fisher Posted May 14, 2021 It's a really lovely, realistic build. Appropriate for the islands.
Bregir Posted May 14, 2021 Excellent shipyard, Wellesley. I like the inclusion of both a slipway and a drydock, and the crane and other implements. Well done. The birds are exceptional. Either I have forgotten writing that letter as Fletcher, or you have taken a bit of a liberty with my character, but no harm done. Is it correct that you used this build as background build for your intro, or similar? Since it hasn't been licensed before, I don't see a problem, but just want to preempt anyone thinking it has been unfairly repurposed. Have you ever shared the template for those coats? I think the rolling waves are very well done too. Evan's comments on photography are spot one - I would suggest finding a good uniform background for your pictures going forward. I use a large rollerblind, as it has little tendency to crease. Overall, obviously a GoC from me. Since a shipyard is producing goods, it would either be factory or artisan. I would suggest a factory, as it seems like large scale standardised production, but it could also be artisan. Wellesley Posted May 14, 2021 @Bregir The buildings are the same as in the intro-thread. Hence I thought about downgrading it to medium.
