Ayrlego Posted August 20, 2020 Corlander businessman Paul Whitehead was travelling between King's Harbour and Jameston when his ship recieved slight damage in a storm and was forced to make an unscheduled stop for repairs in the Sea Rat territory of Tortuga. Paul was travelling with his children, Cassandra (12) and Christopher (8) and was apprehensive at first landing in one of the so called 'free' settlements of the Brick Seas. Popular tales told stories of debauchery and villainy in such settlements and Paul naturally worried for his children, especially when the Capitan of the vessel announced that they would need at least a week to make the repairs. Paul quickly found a reputable inn at a very reasonable price (apparently due to the lack of taxes as the innkeeper was quick to point out at every opportunity). Despite his initial concerns, after a few days he had found Tortuga to be quite a nice place for his family to be visiting! In the afternoon, he liked to visit one of the many beach bars that dotted the picturesque beaches. Cat A - Beach Bar While he quietly sipped a very fine rum (hmm, note to self, maybe there is an opportunity here for the import of Jameston Rum..), his children happily played on the beach. He was even able to obtain a shovel and bucket for them as they wished to compete in a local sandcastle contest or some such thing. His daughter did complain that he didn't procure them a set square and graph paper to design their entry - how serious could a sandcastle competition possibly be! Meanwhile Cassandra; who of course excelled in mathematics and engineering at school, organised herself and her brother and planned their intricate design. She was annoyed that Dad didn't seem to understand the finer points of sandcastle design and she was forced to improvise some internal form work (empty rum barrels) in order to create the tall turrets for their masterpiece. After she and Christopher finished, she was understandably quite proud of their efforts. Hopefully their fine Corish engineering and attention to detail would make their design competitive!
