The animals deserve a 10/10, but not the entire set.

Actually they don't, not by a long shot. The old elephant is better. The old monkey is a lot better. The lion and lion cub are great though.

I'm fine with the red and tan colors, but the sets all feel very 4+ like when they aren't. That's my problem. The elephant feels almost like a Duplo animal.

I think the sets are pretty good. The animals are nice and will go great in my zoo.

This may well be one of the few City sub-themes where I buy all the sets (although I do own all the medical sets except the 2016 airplane and I did pick up the entire Sky Police line)

Although that will obviously depend on how much they cost here in Australia and how hard they are to get on discount (hopefully none of them end up being exclusive to retailers that never discount)

The nice thing about these sets are the animals, the rest is pretty basic, to say it nicely. It's pretty obvious that it's just about the animals and you pretty much don't get anything else. Pricing is insane, a 10€, a 45€ 4+ set and a 90€ and 100€ set? It's clearly designed for people who want the animals, so you have to pay premium and there are no real intermediate sets...

60307 is supposed to be an Animal Rescue Camp, where the hell is the camp? The treehouse-lookout? I expected a makeshift outdoor vet practice, maybe with an operating table, a crane to lift up animals, something along those lines, not some rudimentary trees, a tiny creek, a cave and dudes sitting on a watchtower-tree that the lions could easily climb. Looks more like a safari scene than a rescue scene.

I would have put the ultralight plane from 60307 with a tree and the eagle plus the nest and the egg in the 10€ box instead of the ubiquitous ATV.

The Unimog from 60307 with a vet and a driver plus 2 smaller injured animals as a 20-30€ set (because animals cost a premium), serving as an animal ambulance.

60302: Helicopter plus elephants and croc and the the rubber boat and drop the price to 50€ instead of 90€.

60301 can stay as is, but should be at least 5€ cheaper.

And as I wrote above 60307 should have been a real base camp, with the lab from 60302, a vet practice, the ATV, the tracked vehicle, a crane, a number of animals, supplies etc.

Shame the sets are designed to be just a cash grab and not a good product.

I think your changes would be a good start, but I would further:

60302: Get rid of the street plates, instead add another tree or more foliage pieces

60307: Replace the tracked vehicle with a half-track so it isn't that darn stubby.

I have to agree. The animals look like they ran away from a duplo theme and the sets do have a 'junior' feel. Maybe i'm getting old, but I just don't get it why LEGO never manages to do things right. Yes, themes in the past had their flaws, now the set is just one big mistake.

I guess I just don’t get the point of these kind of posts. If everything is so un-awesome - why be here?

They were made in a different time and consist of a lot of parts. Take the elephant it was made in a time that Lego did a lot of decisions that was not sustainable economically. It made good use of some dinosaur parts, but they had to make several new parts that cost a lot of money. Today they do not have any parts they could use except the trunk, so they would have to make even more parts to make a similar elephant with a lot of parts. So no wonder they made one with a solution of using only two new moulds, on the other side from a third mould that they did not use on the adult we got a completely new juvenile, so it is not all bad news is it

For the Afols or teens that wanted new animals this subtheme is fantastic and one of the best of all time:wub: For kids in the age range 4-6 +/- a few years it is also great, since they never would have made it out in shelf's without passing a lot of kids tests in the development stage. For everyone else the sets probably holds little interest, the City line is for young kids so if you want a similar 18+ set buy a modular etc.. :def_shrug:

I mean vechiles’ color schemes are neat. Green and blue bases are quite useful. Some vegetation that I could or my photography. And these amazing animals.  In my opinion, they are perfect for me. And I didn’t expect too much. :)

I anticipate that the tan helicopter piece will be very popular with military builders. The vehicles looks nice enough and the moulds for the new animals are excellent.

I think I like the new monkey. The old one was creepy. But what I am missing is the baby-monkey from the CMF.

Because LEGO is not just city. And on a forum, I'm free to have (and share) my personal opinion, otherwise this wouldn't be called a forum. I really dislike the way LEGO is taking city these last couple of years. I'm a 90s kid, and LEGO made some bad decisions back then (esp after 1996). 10 years ago, LEGO made some great city sets that depicted the real world (farm, harbour etc).

Even last year they gave us an amazing safari offroader. The contrast between that and the new safari line couldn't be bigger. They don't complement eachother.

And today LEGO is the number one toy company in the world and makes billions every year. They outsourced the company to China and robots. LEGO makes several new dinosaur molds every year. Clearly they have the means to do this in the overpriced City theme. So what exactly is your point?

The body is 100% Duplo feel, thankfully the head is good. I was thinking of selling my old Adventure elephants and buy the new set with that money. That's not happening now.

Am I in a forum or in a cult?

I agree with Thomas, the blend of Juniors/4+ into normal themes have really made City just bland at times. As someone else said, look at the Jungle theme from a few years back, that was amazing. It must have sold well too because I never saw it really on sale or I would have bought more of them.

The old elephant have 10 different parts (not counting the pin), of which 6 comes from dinosaurs/creatures made previously and 4 where made for the elephant. So if they where to make a similar elephant today with 10 different parts, they could probably use 2 parts already in production. However today the dinosaurs/creatures are much more specialised so they can not use any parts from them on the elephant, so then they would have to make 8 new moulds and that is not realistic to expect :sceptic:

You could also probably make a pretty strong case that the use of those dinosaur parts... wasn't necessarily that accurate to actual elephants. The "hips" and "shoulders" of real elephants don't actually protrude outward from their torso like that, nor was their stance so bowlegged. The new elephant is definitely simplified compared to a real one (like other Lego animals such as horses), but overall its shape and stance is much more authentic than the old one.

I don't get your point.

If LEGO can make so many special pieces for the Jurassic sets, why not a better elephant?

You should work there and make your dreams reality! As far as I remember they have a career section in their "About us" page. "Be the change you want to see in the [Lego] world" Not Ghandi

I don't understand.  Why would the safari offroader complement a wildlife rescue squad?  That is like expecting a tow truck to complement a firefighting wave.  As it is I think unlike most fire waves, the wildlife rescue vehicle color scheme will be highly useful for more generic uses.  Like a rival safari company or a cargo company.  Though thinking on it might have been cool if instead of a wildlife rescue squad we had gotten an actual safari company with a tour bus done up in the color scheme of the offroader.  The helicopter would have been boring white yet again though, so I am happy to have the tan wildlife rescue squad.

Well they don't, yes they make some new pieces for a new dinosaur, but most of the parts they take from other dinosaurs.
From what I can see from the dinosaurs that came last year:

  1. Ankylosaurus 12 parts 3 new
  2. Indominus rex 8 parts 2 new
  3. Gallimimus 8 parts 1 new
  4. Pteranodon 5 parts 0 new
  5. Ankylosaurus Baby 1 part 1 new
  6. Triceratops Baby 3 parts 1 new
  7. Velociraptor 8 parts 0 new
  8. Dinosaur Baby 1 part 0 new

Its not that simple. It's a lot of hard work involved. You may also need a college degree.

Are you sure it’s one new part? To me, it seems to hae around 8 new parts (neck/head, lower jaw, body, two legs, two arms).

My complaint would be about the dozen of new Aliens and Monsters Super Heroes and Star Wars get for some minor C-Rate characters.:pir-yoda:

What I just noticed while studying the elephants and why the didn't look really good, was how bland the sets (except the 4+) seem when it comes to accesoires. Of course there are lots of bananas, but nothing really interesting.

I agree here, I'm not disliking the animals but I don't see the big price to volume to stuff beyond those in the actual builds.

I'll probably just pick up the €10 set unless there will be some massive discounts.

I picked up the City Ocean Lab last year, as I think it was a nice overall set + vehicle + animals/figure combination, but didn't see the value in the ship, even with the exclusive animal.

But for most City sets €10 - €30 is usually my favorite price point.

So we have:

  • People who have anything critical to say shouldn't be here
  • People who have anything critical to say will be strawmanned as thinking the past was perfect
  • People can't criticize anything unless they literally take over LEGO from the inside and make the changes they want

How about this instead:

People who can't take the slightest criticism of LEGO without having a breakdown should go start a cult together and leave us people who actually HAVE opinions in peace.

I guess it's an unwritten rule here that anything that sells shouldn't be critiqued.

Show me anywhere in my response, where I said you couldn't criticise Lego's decision. I did not say that with any word. Instead I offered you a constructive path forward which could potentially really change the product design and line-up of Lego sets if you apply your ideas at the company. I meant that. It was meant as an advise not a personal attack. People spend their lives bit**ing about the state of the world at large, when they have the power to change their immediate environment around them all along. One comment on a forum isn't gonna sway a Lego executive or designer to suddenly make better sets. You could start an online movement on social media, though, or affect the company policy from within by working there.

Also aren't you saying with your last sentence that only a negative opinion against something (like the Lego City wave) is in your eyes to "actually HAVE opinions". Isn't that a little bit extreme? Shouldn't the expression of both pro and contra arguments and views be allowed on a Lego discussion forum? Or are you perceiving Eurobricks as a Lego hate "cult", where people can only vent their negative opinions about Lego products and all positive views should be banned? Just asking to clarify your sentence here and not attacking you personally.
