[MOC] The Classic Chess

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone !

In this post, i will present my first chessboard realization which goes from virtual to real bricks: The Classic

It's my third realization in virtual but my first creation in real. It's start now 3 years old and will end next month (order to be made...)

This chess contain approximately 800 pieces.

Chessboard history:

I started by create the board and then i design the game pieces:

but i was not completely satisfied witch the result (pieces too big / taller for the board) and i thereforce copied as faithfully as i could the "classic" pieces that exist in wood, which gives this:

And in the chessboard:

After that, i waited a long time before i decided to realize it which gave me that once i went from 3D to real LEGO bricks :

Kings:

Pawns:

I stayed that way for almost 3 years and i came across an Yoshihito Isogawa video with magnets...

I had concerns about stability (the slightest shock knocked down all the pieces of game) that i wanted to solve and a small modification of the board (design) to do what fell perfectly !

Follow this modifications, the chessboard looks like this now:

Placement of the magnet in the game pieces (same principle in board):

That all for the moment with this chessboard ! More next month !

Thank you for reading me and if you have any questions / criticisms, don't hesitate !

Hello,

really beautiful chess set. I am working on a similar project and I will inspire by your pieces.

I see you are using 2 2x4 tiles as chess squares, but on last picture you switched to 1 2x4 and 2 1x4 tiles. Can I ask you the reason behind this? I am thinking about using 4 2x2 tiles for the sake of symmetry.

Imagine it's to fit a magnet in the centre of each square - not possible if you use two 2x4 tiles.

Oh yes. I missed the part where he describes magnets, thanks.
