[MOC] Lola Aston Martin B09/60 LMP1

Hi everyone !

Today I'm glad to present my latest creation : a replica of a Le Mans Prototype, the Lola Aston Martin !

See below the result, I worked on this creation during 1,5 month :

 

 

 

 

 

 

SPECIFICATIONS : 

- Fake V12 engine

- Independent pushrod type suspensions 

- Steering by HOG + Working steering wheel

- 4 speeds sequential transmission + paddle shifting

- Rear cover articulated

- Elytre openable doors

DESIGN : 

I used this part https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=24118#T=C from 42056 Porsche to create the cockpit front curved shape.

Into the cockpit you can find some details sport wheel and seat. The dashboard include speed indicator serigraphed tile but also green/red indicators to speeds shifting. Paddle shifting is created by 2 short yellow liftarms. You can notice presence of a red extinguisher !

 

 

 

Red and white pins indicate two sides of the paddle shifting !

FEATURES :

To create the HOG, I used one couple of knobs and one couple of 16t. A friction axle avoid steering free wheeling. In other hand, doors are openable.

 

For the rear cover, I used Nathanaël Kuipers tips to keep it open with friction like NK03 (https://www.nkubate.com/predator-supercar/)

 

 

The fake V12 engine is a Crowkillers design : https://bricksafe.com/pages/Crowkillers/mini-v12 The sound it makes in functions of speeds is awesome ! Supensions pushrod system is a copy slightly modified of 8674 set. 

 

For the front pushrod I re-used Nico71 design like on his own LMP1 : https://www.nico71.fr/lmp1-racecar/

I created my own 4 speeds gearbox for this model. It's a flat design like 42056 Porsche one but there are less gears so less friction. I use blue rubber for the 90° indexor. See how its works in the video bellow.

Ratios (without diff) :

1 : 1:1
2 : 1:1,667
3 : 1:3
4 : 1:5

 

I put a paddle shifting in the back of the car to up and down gearbox speeds. I re-designed 42083 shifter to make it smaller.

 

MODULARITY :

Main assembly is easily operate by a modular design. There are 6 modules and 2 structural elements. Cockpit itself is a part of main structure. I choose this kind of design in order to make instructions in the future.

It is a really impressive build.

I like the fact that the shifter is integrated into the rear bumper. The modularity adds a lot!

Oh, and the wheel arch under the windshield is perfect

@Leviathan Thanks for sharing this beautiful le mans racing car!

You managed to fit a bunch of realistic functions without compromising any of the exterior or cabin - exellent work Creative solutotion placing the paddle shifters on the back of the car which seems to improve playability and doesn't disturb the look from the rear. Furthermore clever inboard suspension and I love the fact that the car is modular - working on a modular car myself too . Have you attempted to close the huge gaps at the front wheels? I suppose it was too complicated considering the wheels turing , moving axles and little space availability to mount any panels.

I saw the video a few days ago, I've been watching for your topic. I really like your design, fitting in all the necessary functions to make it a technical model, but without compromising on the aesthetic appearance and bodywork. I also like the modular design. It is something I have always wanted to achieve, yet I have been unable to manage it this far. Kudos to you.

Overall I like the Bodywork, and integrating the shifter into the Bumper certainly is unique. But using these yellow connectors with a ballpin in them in the suspension setup really isnt good, these connectors are really fragile, and there is a high chance of these breaking.

Agree with @Gray Gear for the sturdyness of the lever of the suspension. Could be improved and stiffened.

Great job. I love LMP cars, and this one does not disappoint.

Like others I have said I like the shifter integration. I find myself prioritizing playability in MOCs more than authenticity when it comes to controls. This is why I think all MOCs should have a HOG. So having an external control for the shifter is much better than having paddles on the steering. While it is functionally impressing to get paddle shifters, I hate having to contort my fingers just to execute the function. Your solution is clean and functional. Perfect.

The body work looks great do, and it looks like all the orange parts are available in Dark Azure. It would be great to see a version in this colorway.

I tend to agree, although official Lego sets such as 8458 (Silver Champion) and 8674 (Ferrari F1) are using the exact same setup. I recently acquired the 8458 (20 years old!) second-hand and the yellow connectors were still fine...

They might still be fine, but they could have been replaced as well. If you dont use the suspension, nothing should break. But none of my ~10yo connectors like this are still fine today, because they have been used quite a bit.

Oh, missed this - LMP looks complex and realistic! Must admit cool suspencion solutions and drive train! The whole look is great and recognizable!

What I personally dislike are the front wheel's wings/arches only. They are too boxy, might be closed on the internal side, I mean we should NOT see the front wheels from the front of the car.

Hope It's ok that I write both pros and cons from m side.

You are using Stud.io - select tires on your model and change their colour to "Rubber Black".
