First ever LEGO Technic Top Gear collaboration revealed at LA Auto Show

Los Angeles, USA: Today, the LEGO Group revealed the first ever LEGO® Technic™ Top Gear Set in partnership with BBC Studios. The new LEGO Technic App Controlled Top Gear Rally Car is an authentic looking GT Rally car for ages 9 years and above and will be available globally from 26^th December 2019.

LEGO Technic designers joined forces with the BBC Top Gear team to co-design the body of the car and accompanying stickers to create an ultra-realistic and fast looking racer that fans are sure to enjoy building at home.

The model is remote controlled via the LEGO Technic CONTROL+ app and contains functions such as steering, multi-touch control and gyro control as well as different challenges and achievements to deliver a thrilling, immersive play experience. The rally car comes complete with 1 large motor, 1 XL motor and 1 Bluetooth controlled smart hub.

Looks like an XL and  L Motor, it is sad that they did not come with a new motor like the PF servo motor.

LIke the looks, will be a nice way to get into PF+, but this set has to have the highest sticker-to-parts ratio of all recent Technic sets.

And with all of the stickers, a B-model is a non-starter.

Very evocative of 42077, makes me wonder what that car would have looked like in 42096's downsized wheel arches had come a year earlier. Im also totally digging the turbo under the hood.

On the other hand, €130 for 460 parts just because of C+ and perhaps the TG license is just insane, that is ~100 parts over 42065/95. If this had been the same ~80 of those two sets i might have been interested in trying out the new stuff.

 

Do we have a release date yet? Id like to get my hands on the chassis design, it would be an interesting project to build this, but powered by regular PF, and see how it performs

I'm not totally convinced by the hi stickers count either even if it seems needed to achieve the rally car look. I'm also surprised that we've got different wheel size and tires pattern for the front and the back.

That looks like a 36 tooth gear Torsen differential with Torsen design.

Yes, PU L and XL motors have absolute position sensors.

I don't understand this set. Why Top Gear?

Make up can help but can't make miracles. Neither do stickers.

Watching the video.... they managed to make RC and Lego boring in one shot.

Here you can see the gearing.From what I see it could be a new diff, or just a recolored 28 tooth gear.

I don't get the Top Gear affiliation. For a car show I would expect the set representing an actual car (for example a Lancia like the rumors said). But it appears to be a generic rally car, like its big brother was. What was/is the roll of Top gear franchise in this set? As far as I know, no similar car has ever appeared in any incarnation of the TV show. Could it be a feature in an upcoming season of the show? Also, again no B-model: this trend is here to stay.

I can see this set becoming popular for the kids it is aimed at, but it's not for me. I might eventually try to "detune"  the car and MOD it into a manual, standard hatchback which can fit on the car transporter.

About the diff: You can see a LBG axle (5L maybe) on the left side and a black axle on the right side, sticking out a little more. So this is definitely off center.

If it were like 80€, this would actually be a great starter set, but 130€? Really?
