Thoughts on TROS?

Recommended Posts

A new preview for the upcoming film was released…

So what are your thoughts this far?  Feel free to share anything!

Here are mine:

Spoiler
  • I'm surprised this is the "final trailer!"  It feels like another emotional-packed teaser with dramatic scenes and dialogue but lacking significant dialogue and details to set up the movie's plot.
  • I never been interested in the idea of the New Trilogy, but the movie looks visually stunning.  If for nothing more, that may be the only reason I'd see the movie; it looks cool.  So, yeah, they still got me
  • Endor (if that's the jungle planet Rey's on) looks beautiful!
  • I like the new Star Destroyer just for the fact of the sensor array design.  Its like a glorified crown overcompensating the Empire's naval power!
  • The Rebellion fleet looks like a exciting scene!  Reminds me of the space battle in TFU
  • I saw the Ghost to the left of the Falcon (1:01)!  I wonder who's flying it now?
  • It's nice to see Rose Tico is still in the movie.  I don't like the character but I also don't like the hate people spew at the actress because of the character.  Ever since the news of her character omitted from several pieces of merchandise, I thought the same would be done to her in the movie.  I am curious if she will play a significant role in the film. Though I hope it has nothing to with more space horses and riding them on Star Destroyers!
  • Speaking of the calvary, I know their not in space; the Star Destroyers are emerging from the ice planet.  However, I think a band of swashbuckling Rebels riding horses does not fit the atmosphere of Star Wars, especially in what looks like a highly climatic scene.
  • C-3PO "Taking one last look at [his] friends" feels melodramatic for his rather comedic character (but I guess it works in the same way as for K-2SO).  It's also nonsensical for him to say that to a group of characters he barely knows.  Granted, he is familiar with Chewbaca and Lando, but I would not say their his friends either.  (Unless it's like "the only friends he has but they hardly ever want to associate with him" scenario).  At best, R2-D2 is his "friend," (though he may use that term loosely).  It would be touching if he made that line directly to him, and if Leia is there, he would then say "It was an honor serving you, milady."

The 3PO scene is fake emotional impact since he probably doesn't even know any of characters names. Music and visuals are top tier as usual and the horses are giving me TLJ flashbacks

Shouldn’t this be in another part of the site? There isn’t a single Lego thing to discuss from that trailer

I felt the same on every point!  I don't care for the story so much but I want to guiltlessly enjoy some Star Wars action. So, I hope the movie is cracked up to what this teaser hypes it to be!

True.  I only visit this part of the site, so I didn't consider it beforehand.  LEGO things could be discussed, but then it wouldn't be any different than the topics already going around…

For example: Will they attempt to adapt those horses into Lego? And how ugly will it be?

It might depend on how pivotal of a scene it is.  But it also does not seem like something kids, and fans in general, would want to buy when looking for Star Wars sets.  I suppose if LEGO ever wanted to adapt the more geared to girls Forces of Destiny into their mini doll sets then it might work by a stretch.

Thinking of space horses, that whole casino adventure from TLJ was not adapted into LEGO (probably for good reasons).  It’d be disappointing to see TROS underrepresented like RO and Solo.  The Rebellion fleet by itself is a wealth of material to make sets from.

These main films usually do well at the box office despite the differing opinions.  Though, I wonder for how long does LEGO decide to produce sets for a particular film, regardless of its success?

Apparently the trailer synced up well with predictions by a prominent "leaker." If the rest of the movie follows suit, let's just say that Star Wars is screwed.

@Stash2Sixx Can this thread please be relocated somewhere else? We're already overrun with two threads bashing Star Wars here. Do we really need a third?

No.  If it's too similar to pre-existing topics or does not really fit on this site, then it should be closed.  I won't be bothered.  This was just an idea I had in the afternoon, but reflecting back now, it may only fit within the intended focus of this site by a hair.  I just thought it would be a tamer place here than the likes of reddit :shrug_oh_well:

Not really interested in the movie and not the sets, although the new star destroyer looks interesting.

Spoiler

Rumors are Palpatine is in the film, they seem really desperate to have to bring him back, and this basically means Anakin's sacrifice was meaningless

Use regular LEGO horses.

I'm still hoping Palps is only going to be a force spirit trying to reincarnate. It'd be a bit cheap for him to have actually survived in physical form, but who knows.

I'm not really holding out for a particularly good movie, because everything's going to be with TFA and TLJ in hindsight, and dreaming of what could have been if Lucasfilm sat down to properly plan out the trilogy, instead of rush for money and nostalgia. As such I'm only expecting an entertaining spectacle like TFA. I haven't seen any obnoxiously kiddy stuff like Porgs, which I'm quite happy about, but the horses on the ISD hull were a bit weird. Again though, who knows - maybe they'll serve an actual purpose beyond yay-teamwork.

I think it's well past time Star Wars started to mature with its audience. Solo was a step in the right direction, but I'm not holding my breath for TRoS.

TL;DR I bet it'll be entertaining, but ultimately disappointing.

Also, for anyone complaining about people not liking the sequels, get over it. The thread wasn't titled negatively, and you didn't have to open the thread.

Perhaps @MKJoshA could just merge this topic with this one in the Culture & Multimedia subforum? :shrug_confused:

Yes, that is a good plan. However, I don't have rights over that subform, just the Star Wars one. So I'll ask @Bob De Quatre or @Stash2Sixx if they can help.

Bashing modern Star Wars. I don't think there is a person in this forum who would dump on the OT; I believe there are very few (if any) who are openly hostile to this PT.

But the fanbase is clearly split on Disney's take, so please stop acting like people who have a problem with the ST are just rogue outliers here to spoil the fun. :hmpf_bad:

Modern stuff is always bad. The PT was taken fairly negatively at the time by adults that had seen the OT as kids, especially Episode I.  Give it 20 years and the kids of today will probably see the new Star Wars movies of the future (if they are still coming out) as poor compared to the Kylo Ren era they saw as kids.

I was neither a child when I saw the PT, nor was I immensely critical (save for regarding Jar-Jar). I don't believe even for a moment that TLJ will see some kind of resuscitation given enough time.

I grew up during the Prequels, which are considered by many some of the worst Star Wars movies. I loved TESB as a kid, and was always dreaming of owning the old AT-AT walker. I did like episode 3 as a kid, mostly because of the awesome visuals and worldbuilding, something the OT did right too, but the PT is much more massive (while sacrificing story, character development and such). Now I wasn't into Star Wars that much when the new movies came out, but TFA was okay, I really liked Rogue One (almost as good as TESB), but after that with TLJ and SOLO, I just didn't feel it anymore. I really wished I could be excited for this new movie, get my hopes up and actually see them fullfilled, but the new trilogy lacks so much for me. I feel it doens't do a good job at worldbuilding and the story is largely a mish-mash of PT OT and EU stories. I do like that ol'Palps is back, but that's about it. I do like the trailer, some of the new vehicles (we seem to be getting a lot of those). Then to me Star Wars is also more than the movies alone, Lego and games are part of it too. Now there was a large controversy about the Battlefront 2 lootbox debacle, which also lowered my exitement for the new Fallen Order game. All in all I think Dinsey made a lot of mistakes the past years, causing me to not be that hyped about anything Star Wars related anymore. I do have some hope for the Mandalorian,

(Sorry for the long story)

It started out good, my hopes actually went up (hard thing to do after the Rian Johnson disaster) cause I got a Rogue One vipe, but then ... Horses on a Star Destroyer. :ugh: :ugh: Kill me again. :ugh:

That's what I believe keeps the franchise alive; the other forms of media to engage with and remain invested in the Star Wars universe.  It did so after the PT period and could do so again in this gap of time we'll have after TROS.  I don't think LEGO will skip a beat, not for a second.

Maybe from the prospect of past characters making an appearance from the other side we could finally get official Force Ghost minifigures at some point?  It's past time.  It would be a missed opportunity if they didn't.

I definitely felt RO vibes from the glimpse of the amassing Rebel fleet—looks like an awesome battle will follow.

Maybe the horses are symbolism for Disney's last ride on nostalgia   Before they break away and develop their own Star Wars universe, free from the "bit" of canon.

I agree this part feels like a huge downer. Overall this trailer still managed to get me hyped somehow, and the 3PO scene actually worked for me.
If they manage to keep the clowny/cheesy sequences down this could turn out to be a really decent movie.

The continuity throughout the trilogy will forever be f*** up, but maybe it can at least get a good ending. One can hope right !

I have to share this everywhere :D :D :D

I dont like Collider as they are just Disney shills, but this video is spot on. A very good fake of George Lucas reaction to TRoS

I would think Star Wars -movie related discussion should be at least linked to this part of the forum, because everyone here is, of course, a fan of Star Wars as well, and the discussion topics related to the movies go easily past your attention if you regularly follow only the Star Wars forum. I am interested in the topic, but I wouldn't be willing to scroll multiple different parts of the forum regularly to find the relevant Star Wars topics. The same applies also to custom minifigures, Star Wars related Mindstorms builds etc.

E.g. We could have a general topic "Links to Star Wars related discussion in other parts of the forum" and then everyone who e.g. posts a new topic about an upcoming movie etc. in some other part of the forum could then notify the Star Wars fans here that there is a heated discussion starting over here.
