Is 42081 worth building?

I was on a Lego sale hunting for 42100 for € 270. Of course it was sold out... But I managed to get 42081 for € 70, which I think is a very good price even just for the parts. I intended to part it out as it has quite a few elements I need more of, but looking at it I'm considering to build it.

I never liked the A-model, and had never before looked at the B-model, but seeing it for the first time I'm positively surprised. Does anyone have any experience with it? Is it worth the time to build or is it just another run of the mill build?

A-model on top, B-model on bottom.

I also found a quite interesting C-model MOC of it...

Anybody here have any experience with it?

Yes it is. Designed from single piece to the final model.
I haven't heard any complaints about this model nor the instructions, so have fun ;)

I own the set. Got it under 60 € so a very good deal.

I found the main model quite interesting to build.

M_longer is indeed reputed for doing really good BI so you can go for that as well.

It's a good set and an alright build, with some interesting parts.  I personally prefer the B-model.

There was promo on amazon last weekend. Got 42100 for ~285 eur.

I've built only A-model and I was not impressed by it - it is pretty ugly and functions are very simple. Personally I prefer this wheel skidder built out of set 42081:

Yes. It's a very good alternative also. And you can even try out tomik building instructions as most of his creator's mics are offered for free. And he's really friendly too.

Lets see: only a 2 stage boom not a 3 stage, counter weight is probably a gimmicky function

No gearbox or motors or function gearbox

No suspention or working engine, not even a pendular axle

don't buy it, 42114 costs more but has most of these features

Sadly I don't have a phone to use with it -- mine's too old.

 

 

Also, Should I have more Technic experience before I give it a go? My only prior Technic set is 42093 Corvette ZR1. Should I go for the Ducati first?

I don't think so. You could get 42082 on bricklink for $160... that should explain all...

I feel like you should try 42065 first :)

It's retired but prices are not too crazy.

I think technically it is much better than that Zeus. I think, that Ducati is best set in 2020.
