WIP TOPIC

MPATEV-01 -> Multi Purpose All Terrain Vehicle 01

Hello there! haven't been on the forum for some time and seeing such a contest pop up was a truly delight. Of course first ideas were of the movies "Martian", "Avatar", and "Interstellar", and the idea of building a spaceship seemed exiting. Therefore, i made a sketch of a VTOL transport ship:

mars_mission_freighter01.jpg

However building a freighter or a spacestation didn't exite me so much afterall (absolutely nothing to do with my unfinished tc15 plane :innocent:) so the next obvious idea was a rover. A human-manned one of course. Seeing that the currents WIPs were using wheels, I had a quick browse through lego sets of space/sci-fi themes and quickly found the Exo-Force 8118. It had a combination of double tracks in front and a single wheel in back that got me interested, as it was unusual and cool-looking, so this sketch came to life:

0003.jpg

It was originally planned to use brick-built tracks on front but small track links with turntables for central wheels should work. Most probably double offroad motorcycle tyres on rear (better start saving up for PP wheels duh). Obviously doubly buggy motors with 1.667:1 reduction :devil_laugh: + nuclear reactor BuWizz to power this thing.

Current progress:

It is interesting concept, looking forward to see your progress.  Perhaps some of my ideas (I see you also use turntable as gear) coul help you.

Thank you very much @Jim&@I_Igor!

Progress:

Built second half and did a small test drive. Even geared down it is very fast. small links seem to hold up nicely even on a blanket while being forced sidewards while tank steering. Current width - 18 studs. Also found a suitable canopy - 16477

Now to figure out a steering mechanism for the rear wheel.

Hewo, update time!

Motorcycle wheels were definitely too large, so I ended up using Zerobricks' idea: Tumbler wheel with two 680c01 threads on it (will try to change if it is considered illegal in contest rules topic). Steering is done via an m-motor geared down 3'889:1 mounted in-between drive motors. Buwizz' temporal placement is right beside the motors and rear wheel.

Next step would be to use the spare PF output for scientific equipment of some sort and start with the body. Pics&test vid below, cya later!

Hi-yaa!!! Uuuuuuuuupdate! After some thoughts, decided not to waste my money on a cockpit and used one in my collection, which mixed in really well due to it orange colour - same colour scheme from Mars Mission :sweet:. Changed up the track design as well, legthening it by 2 studs on the rear, adding a support wheel and making an inclination on front allowing for better terrain attack. The design... well, let's say the drawing were more inspirational than anything , ended up using single centralised cab goinfg from the front all the way over the rear wheel, as well as making grilles on the rear-most of the lateral protrusions (#21&#22 2x5 panels). The cab still needs to be fixed on the front because as of right now, it is only fixed with 2 pins on the 5x11 diagonal panel. Additionally, I'm not happy with how the lights look right now - not very futuristic. I have in mind placing transparent bionicle eyes (teeth pieces) on the empty pinholes on #1&#2 panels on front and on the same location where the lights are mounted now place a pinhole w/ single pin and there place the LEDs. The mounting of the rear wheel needs to change as well, probably will add a few #17/18 or #5/6 panels.

Tbh this turned out to more of an exploration vehicle that probably would be used to make reconnaissance missions rather than transport cargo or scientific equipment heheh. Pictures posted below, cya later!!!

@I_Igor @Bartybum @Samer Thank you all very much, glad to hear people like it!!!!

Aaaand update agaaaaaain!!!! Konosuba+dancing+gifs+centerbig3httpsmyanimelistnetanime30831kono+subarashii+sekai+ni+shukufuku+wo+big3centertrigger+large+stats+mentionlist+animango_f5c55b_6194110.gif

Completed everything mentioned in my previous update and done some more! Photos w/ descriptions below! :classic:

First of all I'm mostly done&happy with overall bodywork, it has some holes here and there but I'm not a modern "perfectionist", specially considering my preference of 00's sets  . Filled in some of the most visible gaps with tiles tho, gotta keep up with modern trends somehow heheh.

20190624_185758.jpg20190624_185818.jpg20190624_185835.jpg20190624_190427.jpg

The rear is now secured well and can support the full weight (about 900g - 1kg) of the model, making it very easy to carry it, althought you'd probably want to rip around with two buggy motors mwahahaha

20190624_190531.jpg

The rear wheel got an updated support fork and a mudguard - also it can be removed (sorry, no photos yet, but it just leaves the 5x7 frame with the turntable on it) as most of the weight is over the tracks, giving them good grip. Removing the wheel gives some space under the rear of the body, allowing to place some sort of cargo to be hauled there -> +1 function I got there. Continuing with modular abilities is the rear itself - the 3l axles w/stud can be removed allowing the placement of different modules there (below is a WIP module installed there) The turning angle is goo and is limited by the rear of the main body to avoid the wheel getting stuck or over-turning.

20190624_190042.jpg20190624_190111.jpg

Now, onto less practical stuff:

Following my plan, bionicle eyes headlights w/PF were done, not sure whether to keep them blue or change to clear ones (latter ones don't stand out as i would've liked). Attached below a photo with them turned on.

20190624_190245.jpg

The front canopy can be opened up, as well as a small access hatch behind it (that's what the 2x4 beam is for). Being this a *quote* "Out of this world" vehicle, I went for Exo-Force minifigs - Ha-Ya-To&Hikaru - (just love these faces tbh, would've loved to have more of these available :cry_sad:) hence the change to 01 in the name, to match with their body prints. Still need to detail it more though.

20190624_185942.jpg

Towards the middle of the body over the exhausts area, two service panels are openable revealing... something somewhat technical-looking maybe

20190624_185912.jpg

And of course, the underside!  There are less colours than you probably expect, I'm a self-proclaimed Devil Lord of black chassis' afterall :devil_laugh: ! (still need sum black frames n' bushes :innocent:)

20190624_190155.jpg

From now on most progress will be towards the attachments, interior and minor cosmetics (stickers/gap filling) , update tomorrow or next day! Cya all!!!

Looks totally awesome and loved your design approach as well, the steady transition from sketch to reality !

There does appear to be a minor weak point though, which can easily be corrected. The 9 length liftarm which connects the rear wheel to the turn table will put too much pressure on the two pins which connect to the turn table. You may want to put a one stud gap between the pins or make it three pins.

@ArsMan064 Sure will!

@iLego Thank you, that was fixed in my previous update ;)

@agrof Thank You very much, served me as an inspiration for one of the attachments :sweet:

Aaaaaand another update!

No changes to the main vehicle, however made two attachments so far.

1. Exo-suit transporter. The crane rotates 360° and can be used to transport the exo-suit. There's also a small crate with tools and two spotlights - one on each side.

20190625_193628.jpg20190625_193651.jpg20190625_193658.jpg20190625_193914.jpg

The exo-suit folds down for ease of transport and a minifig can be placed inside.

20190625_194021.jpg20190625_194029.jpg

2. Rescue towing attachment. Can be raised using the mini LA, rotated about 270° and hooked up for transport.

A couple of comparison photos for now, more attachments in development!

This is an awesome display model. After the competition maybe you consider to publish instruction on rebrickable.

I would love to display it on my desk :D

Great MOC! Looks really playable as it’s so fast. The interchangeable cranes in the back is a nice addition.

I would have preferred a linear actuator or worm gear mechanism for the steering though. Such a mechanism provides a much more precise control - especially for such a fast vehicle where you don’t want to accidentally oversteer.
