I'm going to get this set for its electric components, nice parts and, from what I've seen, its potential for fun. But I foresee that those light orange (or whatever they turn out to be) parts will sit in my bins together with the very light bluish greys that came with my NXT set.

I think the color is 'bright light orange', as in:

Hmmm... I see the smallest curved triangle panels is Bright Light Orange here. The panels that are colored in 42099 with stickers but black themselves (check out the "doors" nearby the B-pillars).

You are quite right. You would expect them to have used the small bright light orange panels, as they already exist. This makes me believe it's not bright light orange, even though I still hope it is.

Yes they are black, I think there is an "optimisation" going one like with dark azure color...

One mod I wanna do is make the rear wheels pendular and steered just tlike the front wheels.

Just noticed the body is designed to be easily removable:

If you also make the rear axle pendular, you'll need something more to keep the body from flopping to one side or the other.

Yes, this would indeed need addressing (after looking carefully at the model).

I would either have to just support the body with more springs which are used for the pendular mechanism.

or I would have to make  just the axles pendular, not the entire motor as well.

Anyone know why the rear axle has a 9L ball socket link when there is no steering?

Probably to fix the hub's position. The 8466 also has both ball socket links and no steering in the rear

unimog was effectively pendular at both ends.. well not strictly pendular, but same difference when we're talking about the body-roll. probably my favourite suspension in fairness. might re-build the unimog one day!

Thanks for posting the video. I'm not a fan of the set but I see potential with the new control hub.

This is the set I will definitely buy :)

Edit:

First thought after seeing the reviev (very informative btw) - it's strange, that there is so low torque in this set, or I would say in the PU XLs? It seems that 4x4 had much more power during presentation showed a while ago.

(rant incoming)

I didn't expect much from the start, but honestly it's just pathetic now. Front suspension is clearly sagging, and 3 studs can't even be called ground clearance for a vehicle this size. Performance of this vehicle goes in pair with the 6x6 released previously, but now with tons of specialised parts, another color/sticker barf and a brand new electrics system that not only hasn't improved anything except the control range, but now uses an unnnecessarily big battery box and terrible connector.

For the good part... planetary gears seem cool, but only good for independent suspension setups, as portal axles will offer higher ground clearance in other types of suspension. Hopefully the fact that XL and L motors are now faster doesn't influence their torque specs.

Personal conclusion: nothing new, 9398/41999 were much better offroaders IMO, more realistic and better looking than this wannabe monster truck.

The 42099 is better than the 42070 because its suspension is fully pendular (six wheels need more points of articulation, which the 42070 lacks), and the PUp system allows for more range, doesn't need line-of-sight, and most of all works in direct sunlight.

What specialised parts are you referring to? In my opinion, the planetary hub and the large CV joint are very useful parts.

The set is a great part pack for me, but I need more info about those new XLs and Ls and how they behave with the app.

  1. Of course suspension is better on this model, but that HAS to go in-hand with proper clearance - of which there is none
  2. PUp is a failure imo. Sbrick was released years ago (I won't even talk about BuWizz), and TLC still has the same power cutoff problems from 2007. 12 years and still lacking power to even justify "crawler" name. Non-stackable connector and huge size of the receiver aren't helping either, but yes, they finally used bluetooth and you can ride your monster truck on flat terrain with your sunglasses on.
  3. Planetary reduction sounds cool but these are simply hubs (black ones were released not too long ago as well) 1 function, that's all. Of course, my specialty isn't large offroad MOCs. However, from what I can see, people on this forum have done amazing offroaders without those.

Most probably I'm too picky, but how hard it is for an enormous company to make something using current parts lineup, and make it good - there are thousands of MOCs that are a million times better than official stuff. I grew up admiring crazy sets like 8675, 8110, 8466, 8258, 8043, 8275... wtf happened now? Sometimes I wish I were born earlier to enjoy these in their days of glory.

Neat. Looks like it has a bunch of the double split connector 41768 in normal orange (also in 42088). I like the new orange colour.

Interesting review, very informative.

A few questions though:

How many of each of the new pieces are in the set? (Forgive me if you already wrote it in the video)

Where did you get this set from?
