Somewhere under the Highridge Mountains, Varlyrio

Fel and her companions walked for what seemed like forever. Every so often, they'd hear strange noises skittering in the darkness. Eventually, Fizzum took them off the ancient ruined path and into the unknown caverns. He kept to himself, muttering about particles in the air and the light being "the wrong color".

He got excited when they reached a place where bizarre mushrooms pushed out from the rocks as if seeking the sky far above them.

29275249817_31430ae372_t.jpg "Look at this, Arrea!"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Don't get too close to that thing. Don't touch it with your baby hands, it might sting ye."

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg "Will it actually sting her?"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Fah! No. Just trying to have a little fun."

28959531827_afe7858522_t.jpg "What is he saying, Ms. D'Gatto?"

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg "Uhhh... nothing!"

29275249817_31430ae372_t.jpg "It's so pink and gross. It looks like skin. Are all the mushrooms down here like this?"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Just the non-carnivorous ones."

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg "That's good to know. Now."

29275249817_31430ae372_t.jpg "Those brown ones look normal enough. But they all seem so... big?"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "There are millions of fungus species down here. Some of 'em are as big as houses."

29275249817_31430ae372_t.jpg "Really?"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Of course really. Take that one for example, that one over there by your friend with the spear? It talks."

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg "Who, me?"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Fah. No. The other one."

mushroom1.jpg "Slllrssshsrr vakrrooooo mshtttaaar!"

28959531827_afe7858522_t.jpg "Huh? What are you?"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Quit waving your toothpick around. That's a friend."

28959531827_afe7858522_t.jpg "It's pointing at me."

29275249817_31430ae372_t.jpg "Maybe in a friendly way?"

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg "It seems like it wants us to go with it."

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg  "Of course it does. Took a while for it to find us and here I thought I was plenty smelly."

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg "Wait, did we go off path so that this... this mushroom fella could smell us?"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Fah! Stop asking all these questions already. We have places to be."

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg "Is this what you said we were going to have nightmares about? Talking mushrooms?"

mushroom1.jpg "Arrrrllllllttttrrrrr maaahhhhhffur!"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Eh no, no. She didn't mean it."

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg "What did I say?"

43675285334_85e4899ba2_t.jpg "Never mind what you said, just don't say it again."

Leaving the others bewildered, Fizzum marched off to join the mushroom fella.

29275249817_31430ae372_t.jpg  "Maybe it was the way you said it?"

42090393570_686b5c709c_t.jpg  Sigh. "Thanks, Tisha."

Builder's Notes:

Spoiler

Bonus Shot:

800x467.jpg

-Small builds are how we make The Lion's Eye! Might be doing a bigger one next time. Or an action scene. Or both!

-Really needed to get this one out but I really struggled with how much scope to include for what is essentially another "travelers on the road" scene.

-The landscaping and rockwork is pretty plain. I chickened out of dedicating some time to do something bigger or more outside my comfort zone with this stuff.

-Been wanting to do Lego mushroom people for a while. Gonna try to have some variety when we see more. See if some of those MFZ skills can transfer to myconoids.

I love the waky build and figs.  Nice mushrooms, and I like the use of the pink with the red makes them stand out.  Fun story too.

Nice job, McC. Yes it's small and yes a bit plain, but I think it serves the purpose very well, moving the story forwards (and you won't have to explain how they met the mushroom fella in another episode!). I wish I could stick to small builds like this for my episodes too! Looking forward to see where Fel and the others end up

The build is a bit plain, and a bit rough at the edges. Maybe you could have added an extra layer of plates to underneath the round out the square edges of the base? But it's not bad: the colour scheme is alright, fungals biotope are not seen often, and the minifigs are imaginative.

Btw, I like the term "travellers on the road", I'll be using that. :classic:

Love these crazy bitope with huge fungus. Maybe the edges of the landscape could use some wedges to break up the blockiness.

I like the mushrooms here, especially the big pink ones. The sentient fungus is also cleverly done. The base itself is a bit rough, but it conveys what it needs to convey and tells the story. I look forward to reading more of it soon!

Sometimes you just gotta push something out even if it isn't super impressive. Have definitely learned that even though I wish everything I made looked like how I imagined it initially.

There's all kinds of things I should have done. This is not my finest work haha. But thanks for the compliments.

Yeah, good point.

I got back into Lego thanks to a little-known war game called Mobile Frame Zero that uses Lego for "Frames", which are mecha. The basic design of a Frame corresponds really well to roughly 'fig sized brickbuilt humanoids like this fungal dude.

I do think this build is weak. I have some ideas for the next part, the Mushroom Folk village, but I find rockwork so discouraging that the idea of doing another subterranean scene is a little intimidating. I think I may try the same approach here where the background is something viewers will have to imagine.  I think I'll go for a more traditionally shaped base and a kind of basic "village layout" and build it out from there. Something like the village I made for Yureishima way back when.

Absolutely hilarious build!  I think you hit the tone of the gnome just right, being wholly focused on his own little problem and completely oblivious to the reality and dangers around him.  Perfect!  The mushrooms are a brilliant use of pink and the whole scene with mushrooms scattered about is great.  The bits of olive on DBG look really good, too.  The story works well and is interesting; it keeps me wanting to read about Fel and her adventures!  Great job!

Good to read another installment in your story! I like the mix of olive and dark bley for the ground, while the fantasy shrooms set a great atmosphere

The humanoid mushroom is a super fun design and I'm interested to find out what other unusual things they will see next!

GREAT to see some nice fleshing out of other parts of Varlyrio.  Great concept and love your story, as before.  Excellent work!

Very unique build with some great colour choices! The dialogue with the faces next to them makes it easy to follow the story. I would like to read more!
