REVIEW - 42094 - TRACKED LOADER

45424826125_d936406b46_b.jpg

INTRODUCTION
Looking at the entire range of 1H 2019 models, this model seems to be the one packing the most functions. Your milage may vary, but yellow "construction-ish" vehicles are always welcome to me. And this one looks particularly unusual and interesting. Let's find out what it is all about.

This review might be less detailed than usual, but time was limited. Sorry about that. I do hope you enjoy it anyway!

HIGHLIGHTED PARTS

PANELS
These panels are new in dark bluish grey. The also appear in the Getaway Truck.

20T DOUBLE BEVEL GEAR WITH CLUTCH
This gear first appeared in the Bugatti Chiron and it's good to see it pop-up in another set. Quote from the Chiron review; it's basically the same as the regular 20T bevel gear, but it has a pin hole, instead of axle hole. And it has clutches on both sides.

PART LIST
The part list for the 827 parts.

THE BUILD
The chassis already shows some of the functionality in this set. One of the rear axles is connected to the mini linear actuator and the other is connected to the large turntable.

44500371470_0806853704_b.jpg

The axles are extended to outside the bodywork. You can also see the manually operated winch.

44500371980_806052267d_b.jpg

The cabin is placed on top of the big turntable and can be rotated 360 degrees.

45404212345_ff8c4c6732_b.jpg

That is one mean looking grabber on the boom.

44500371940_d9dda3e0b4_b.jpg

The undercarriage for the treads. You can see two springs, but they are not used as conventional suspension. They are used to put pressure on the sprockets.

COMPLETED MODEL
After adding the treads and connecting the chassis to the undercarriage, here's the final model. Two logs are included.

45614131564_d936406b46_b.jpg

Brutalis does look brutal. What I like most, is the design of the cabin. And I love that it can rotate freely, without any limits. This picture shows the cabin 180 degrees rotated.

45404212155_53b8675eeb_b.jpg

At the rear you can see the lever to switch between "Rabbit" and "Turtle" winch modes. Not that there is much difference between the two modes, but I like this added detail. After all, that's what Technic is all about.

The bottom view of the undercarriage and chassis.

31378088777_a278c4cf8a_b.jpg

Here you can see the front of the cabin, which looks stunning.

45614131494_6855494b8b_b.jpg

As I said before, the vehicle doen't have suspension. It simply looks that way because of the springs.

45404211965_37a9050f0a_b.jpg

The rear view showing the winch, and the locking mechanism at the bottom right. The winch is operated by the 12T bevel gear on the right.

B-MODEL
The B-model looks promising. Could have been the main model.

SUMMARY
This medium sized set perfectly shows what the Technic theme is all about. It combines the looks with a handful of nice features. It does not have interesting new parts, but the features and aesthetics make up for this. This set definitely gets my nod of approval

PROS

  • Great aesthetics
  • Rotating cabin via 12T gear (360 degrees)
  • Raising and lowering boom via 12T gear
  • Manually operated grabber
  • Operating the winch via 12T gear
  • Switching between two winch modes

CONS

  • Nothing really, maybe lack of actual suspension

The first image cracked me up HAHAHAHA. Wacky model with seat facing the rear and weird claw pose. Is it trying to be a Claas Xerion or sth haha

Ehm... it's the back of the cabin?

This set lives up to expectations, looks better even than on first images. TLG still has it:sweet:

You can clearly see I have had way too little sleep.

I have been so focused on completing reviews, that I took most of the cabin pics backwards.

I will now take some new pictures. This is embarrassing :sadnew:

Impeccable! Magnifiqué! Somptueux, remarquable, de grande qualité!

On another note, I think you should include the blue 20z gear in the highlight part.

And another note, if we remove the winch in the back and put a PTO output, we will have a mini tracked Claas Xerion.

Very nice review and I have to tell this every time - your photos are still amazing  This will be the next one to build once I finish the Porsche review.

Unusual vehicle with decent amount of functions for that size. It has interesting parts, so I plan to buy it when it will be available in my local store. Perhaps TLC should put this part in black on cab.

This is a fun set, that is a little different than others we have seen. I like the recent trend to unique vehicles from TLG. Thanks as always for the review.

@Jim One thing I'd like you to elaborate, if you can, is how the grapple works. There's a liftarm with red bush, so it's supposed to be a lever of some sort, but how exactly do things move when you push and pull the lever?

Yup, you simply move the red bush. The bottom six teeth basically move/rotate and and down when you move the lever.

Great quality photos as ever @Jim

Think I’m more convinced than ever that I’ll buy this and try and build the B from my parts bin.

Can I just mention that these reviews always feel totally fair and honest - there's no angle or spin, and that can be a rare thing, so i think its worth thanking @Jim for that.

And, this is a personal thing for me, they're written from a positive perspective. The glass is always half full. Lego for me, makes me smile, even if its not the 'perfect' set. I sometimes the amount of negativity on some threads mind boggling! Its a toy, and an awesome one and maybe that gets lost sometimes... i feel Jim's reviews tap into that positivity perfectly (without going to far and being unrealistic).

..and the pics are great. Really gives you a solid basis to make that important purchase decision.

Thanks for the kind words, and nice to see someone sharing my "glass is half full" philosophy

Great review as always.

I wonder, are there openable doors at all on the cabin? I was so sure I saw something about that at some point.

Yeah, they can be opened. Yet, another cabin mistake I made (forgot to mention and forgot to take a picture)

I will go to bed now

Yes, tomorrow is manic Monday (again), but review is very nice including beautiful pictures. This is my favorite 1h set for 2019 year.
