Welcome!

Welcome to Factions. A home for MOCs from all eras of Star Wars loosely tied together by a map-based strategy game.

The game itself takes place after the battle of Jakku, but builds can represent any planet in any era of Star Wars.

The goal of the strategy game is to find and control Holocrons. They are revealed by exploring planets and winning challenges.

There are many different factions you can petition to join. Being a part of a faction allows you to participate in 'episodes' (challenges), build freebuilds to earn in-game XP, tags, and other rewards, as well as other aspects of the game. You'll have a main character in-game, and through your building, you can advance your character and help your faction win.

Getting Started

  • Private Message (PM) a faction leader to ask to join their faction. Each faction has it's own style, storyline, and aesthetic, so you'll need to create a character in line with whatever faction you petition to join. Faction description, requirements, and contact info can be found in each faction's post at the top of the Factions subforum. You may only create one character, even if you change factions; make it a good one with a flexible storyline.
  • Create your character, upload a 100x100 picture to your preferred image host, and fill out the Character Creator form. You can choose any name for your character but please keep it appropriate. Players may change factions at any time, but faction leaders do not have to accept new recruits. Alternatively, when builders have earned 75 XP they can create their own faction.
  • Introduce yourself in the Introduction and Discussion topic. Fill out the Character Creator form to have your character added to the active players list.
  • (optional) Create a signature using this generator created by @Bob De Quatre. Please note that it does not currently support Flickr photos for the avatar. We hope to fix this soon.
  • Read up on the Core Rules here!

Where to Post What

  • This subforum, Factions, is used for this game. As such, you should only post your entries to Star Wars Factions here.
  • The Core Rules contains the rules; questions about the rules should be asked in this topic.
  • Players should introduce characters in this Introduction and Discussion topic and fill out the Character Creator form. All posts in this Introduction and Discussion topic should be Out of Character.
  • Each faction will have their own way of communicating, so check with your faction and discuss your upcoming builds, Works-in-Progress (WIPs), strategies, and storylines through whatever method your faction leader proscribes.
  • Announce your free builds in your faction topic to receive feedback, but make sure to also fill out the appropriate form to have it scored.
  • Episodes will be announced in their own topics, and you will be able to use those topics to ask questions about and discuss the specific episode.

Core Rules

Main Objectives

  • To have fun building in the Star Wars Universe!
  • Our goal is to allow freebuilding without too many restrictions but with a semblance of order based around Faction Leaders. Builds are not restricted to single avatars, canonical timeframes, or well established planets.
  • We want Factions to always have direction and purpose and as such we will try to always have a main challenge for the factions to work to complete. There will be plenty of other activities to keep a faction busy as well.
  • Factions and Members are encouraged to write stories for their characters and focus on world-building within the Star Wars Universe.

Main Challenges

  • The first main challenge is to help your faction find and hold on to 2 or more Holocrons before the campaign ends. Doing so causes your team to "win" the campaign. Your faction only wins if they posses at least 2 Holocrons when the campaign ends, it does not count as a win if your faction had the Holocrons earlier in the campaign, only if they have them at the end.
  • In the case of a tie with two or more factions having 2 or more Holocrons, the faction with the most Holocrons wins. In the case that 2 or more teams are tied for the most Holocrons, the team with the most XP will break the tie.
  • When the 7th holocron is found, it will begin a 6 month countdown. At the end of those 6 months the winning faction will be decided.

Other Building Events

There will be other events that are unlocked as you build on different planets. These include:

  • Era Builds - Time period builds set during various eras of Star Wars history. These include, but are not limited to: Old Republic, Clone Wars, Galactic Civil War, etc.
  • CYOA - Choose Your Own Adventure style story campaigns.
  • Bounty Hunter Missions - Same rules as before, but now each successful mission will net you 10 XP.

Factions

  • Each faction is led by a player with 75 XP or more.
  • Faction Leaders (75+ XP) will be responsible for establishing the aesthetic and storyline for their faction. Faction Leaders can designate one or more "2nd-in-command(s)" to assist them in leading their faction. Faction Leaders are expected to encourage the most accurate Star-Wars-aesthetic and the most engaging story plots.
  • Faction Recruits (0-74 XP) must pledge allegiance to and be accepted by one of the Faction Leaders. If a Faction Recruit earns more than 75 XP, they do not automatically become a leader of their own faction. They must make that change on their own, in their own time, with the Faction Change Form. A player with more than 75 XP can also decide to simply continue as a Faction Recruit.
  • Faction members earn XP for every build. When they build on a planet accessible to their faction, the faction also earns the same number in Influence Points (IP). When the member builds anywhere else, he still earns XP, but the faction earns no IP. Factions may agree to share access to their territory. Faction leaders are responsible for knowing where their members can build and who cannot build in their territory.
  • Faction Recruits may transfer factions without approval from their current Faction Leader. Any IP earned for their previous faction will stay with the faction. Badges or other items associated with their previous faction may be forfeited.
  • Once a faction member reaches 75+ XP and decides to start their own faction, they may choose to reclaim any IP they earned for any current or previous faction to start their new faction. Of the reclaimed IP, up to 50 IP may be removed to another planet, so that the new faction may have at least one planet with which to start their faction. If a new Faction Leader decides not to reclaim any portion of their IP from their former factions, the new faction will be given 50 IP to use anywhere on the map. New factions can only reclaim IP once and no IP may be reclaimed after the 50 free IP is taken. Reclaimed IP is deducted from the former faction's holdings.
  • At the beginning of the campaign a faction begins with a total IP of its combined member's XP. For example, if the Faction Leader has 210 XP and 4 Faction Recruits join who each have 25 XP, the Faction begins with 310 IP. Faction Leaders will decide how the IP is allocated across the map, but all IP spent will be traced back to the Faction Recruits so that the IP may be reclaimed if they reach 75XP.

Member Skills

  • In addition to joining a faction, each person will choose a skill to specialize in. This skill is used for storytelling and challenge purposes and is not meant to restrict what a player can or cannot build. If you pick Technician that doesn't mean your character cannot also fly star-fighters. But it does mean that if a challenge requires an Ace skill, a Technician does not qualify.
  • Each person needs to choose one of the main skill headings. Examples of each skill are listed in parentheses. For example, you should pick Ace, not Driver which is just an example of what an Ace skill might look like.
    • Ace (Driver, Gunner, Pilot, Beast Rider)
    • Engineer/Technician (Mechanic, Droid Specialist, Shipwright, Cyber Tech)
    • Soldier (Commando, Foot Soldier, Sharpshooter, Heavy)
    • Explorer (Scout, Trader, Archaeologist, Big-Game Hunter)
    • Colonist (Homesteader, Community Elder, Councilman, Tradesman)
    • Smuggler (Scoundrel, Thief, Gambler, Gunslinger)
    • Bounty hunter/Hired gun (Assassin, Bodyguard/Enforcer, Marauder, Demolitionist)
    • Diplomat (Ambassador, Agitator, Analyst, Propagandist)
    • Guardian (Peacekeeper, Protector, Armorer, Warden)
    • Commander (Squadron Leader, Tactician/Strategist, Figurehead, Instructor)
    • Spy (Infiltrator, Informant, Slicer, Burglar)
  • Your first skill is free. Multiple skills may be earned by accumulating 50 XP building for Factions, XP earned in SoNE does not count for skills in Factions.

Earning and Using XP/IP/Credits

  • Each player can earn XP (Experience Points). Each Faction can earn IP (Influence Points).
  • Each freebuild a player submits can earn up to 50 XP. The average build will earn 1-10 XP. Builds that really stand out can earn 11-30 XP. Builds that show an immense amount of effort can earn 31-50 XP.
  • For every XP a player earns, their faction will earn an IP. Each build submitted by a player will need to have a planet assigned to show where it takes place. Space builds can be assigned to the planet they are nearest to in space. The XP earned by these builds will earn IP for that specific planet.
  • Builds will be scored and points will be earned throughout one month judging periods. Judges will try to judge builds as soon as possible, and points will be awarded as they do, but you should not expect your build to be judged in less than a month. If you build is not judged by that time, check with your Faction Leader and make sure you correctly completed the Submittal Form.

The Map

  • The game map utilizes the map created by Henry Bernberg with his permission. His map will be used to decide which sectors planets and hyperspace lanes are located in. The map below is a snapshot of his and can be used for general reference:

250521_Factions_map.jpg

  • There are 5 main hyperspace routes: Perlemian Trade Route, Corellian Run, Corellian Trade Spire, Rimma Trade Route, and Hydian Way. All other routes are treated equally.
  • There are three ways to access different parts of the galaxy: planet control, sector control, and hyperspace routes.
    • Planet control: If your Faction has IP on a planet, you may continue to build and gain IP on that planet. If you control a planet, you may build on any planet in that Sector. Example, if you gain #IP on Tatooine during an Episode or other contest and your faction would not have access to that planet otherwise, you may continue to build on Tatooine. However, you may not gain IP on Geonosis or any other planet in R16 until you have controlled Tatooine. (You may not use SoNE IP to seed the galaxy with planets to build on. SoNE IP is meant to be used in full or in whatever quantity is needed to control a planet.) ***Rule clarification 10/21/19***
    • Sector control: If you control a sector, you may also build in all 8 adjacent sectors.  Example, if you control O7, you may also build in N6, N7, N8, O6, O8, P6, P7, and P8.
    • Hyperspace routes:
      • If you control a planet located on a hyperspace route, you may build on any other planet located on that route.
      • If you control a sector that a hyperspace route passes through, you may build in any of the other sectors that the route passes through.
  • A route is considered continuous for as long as it keeps the same name.
    • Example:  If I control the planet Trellen (M11), I can build anywhere along the Trellen Trade Route up to and including Kashyyyk (P9).  However, I cannot build on any of the routes beyond Kashyyyk, because they all have different names.  I also could not build on Gorse (O10) because it's not located on the Trellen Trade Route.  But, if I controlled Trellen's sector (M11), I could build on Gorse or any other planet in a sector that the Trellen Trade Route passed through.
  • The only exception is unnamed hyperspace routes (routes that are labeled "no data" when you zoom in and hover over the route.  Unnamed routes are considered contiguous until they change direction from (mainly) north/south to east/west.
    • For example, the unnamed route leading south from Columex (R6) could be considered continuous until Nimban (S10) when the unnamed route turns west.  I also could not use the unnamed route running east/west through Boonta (S8) because it travels a different direction than the one I'm using.
    • Another example, in Sector O6, the Braxant Run ends at Bandomeer. So if you control M6, you could build on O6, but you could not use that route to access the entire Hydian Way. Also on O6, there are two angles on the Celanon Spur at Drackmar and Botajef. Therefore, you could not use that route to go from M6 to P6.
  • In the case that sector has no clear hyperspace routes entering the sector, you can access it by being adjacent to it. For example, the planet Jedha is found in sector H10, but has no visible hyperspace lanes. A faction may access it by controlling G9, H9, I9, G10, I10, G11, H11, or I11. Another example, Lothal is in U7 but only has a hyperspace route entering from above it in U6. If a faction is blocked from that hyperspace route, they could also access Lothal in U7 by having control of any of the sectors which are adjacent to U7.
  • Factions have access to the entirety of the 5 Main Hyperspace Routes, regardless of angles, if they control a sector along the routes. Be sure to zoom into the Galaxy Map to make sure, or ask MKJoshA, LucasLaughing, BEAVeR, or goatman461 for a ruling before your team starts to build.
  • Factions can block other factions from earning IP on planets that would otherwise be accessible. If the opposing faction must travel THROUGH a sector under the blocking faction's control, the blocking faction may post an interdictor and stop all ships from moving through the sector. (Opposing factions can still earn IP in the sector being blocked and builders can still post builds on inaccessible planets without earning IP for their faction. The 5 Main Hyperspace routes may not be blocked.) To block another faction, the blocking faction must:
    • control the sector;
    • build and post a 50+ stud-long interdictor in the blocked sector (does not have to be the Imperial design, build what you think an interdictor should look like, part of your points will depend on how much the judges agree with your concept);
    • declare the blockade in each faction's pinned topic;
    • post two new builds in the blocked sector every month (blockades will be discontinued if new builds are not posted between  and a new 50+ stud interdictor must be built and posted)

Controlling the Map

  • Once a faction has earned 25 IP on a planet the planet is considered explored. Any Holocrons or other bonuses on that planet are discovered and visible to that faction. Once a faction has 50 IP on a planet, that planet is under their control. Opposing factions can take over or retake a planet by scoring 25 IP more than the current faction.
  • Controlling 3 or more of the planets in a sector puts that sector under the faction's control. If more than one faction controls 3 or more planets in a sector, control is decided by who owns the most by simple majority. If there is a tie, the faction that controlled it most recently retains control until another faction gains the simple majority.
  • If a sector has fewer than 3 planets, all planets must be controlled to control the sector.
  • If a sector has no planets, the only way to control it is by placing a Space Station in the sector. Space Stations can be purchased by Factions under special circumstances that will be unlocked later in the campaign.

Initial Map Set-Up

  • We will give each player a couple weeks to choose which faction they want to join or create. After this initial period we will begin claiming territory.
  • Set-Up began by each faction choosing 1 planet to be their starting point. The starting factions gained 50 bonus IP for that planet and thus gains exploration and control status of that planet. Order for picking will be based on total team XP from the previous round.
  • After this the game begins and each faction can start building across the map.

Customs/Third-Party/non-LEGO Parts

No clone brands (Megablocks, KREO, etc) are allowed, but 3rd party fig parts and accessories (Brickarms, Citizen Brick, etc.) may be used. However, the judges prefer official LEGO parts and will take into consideration your use of 3rd party pieces when judging for XP. Any overuse or deceptive use may be penalized by the judges. Please specifically avoid the following:

  • Custom parts used to make connections not possible or feasible with official LEGO parts - allowing customs is mostly meant to allow a few more minifigure accessory and lighting choices, not to give anybody a building advantage
  • Colors outside of LEGO's color palette
  • Builds that focus on the custom material instead of the LEGO build - we don't want to see your custom figbarfs
  • Heavily customized minifigures - the majority of any minifigure's parts should be official LEGO parts
  • Any especially offensive material (see EU guidelines)

FAQs

  • Q: Do I have to participate in every episode/challenge?
A: No. We know everyone has other responsibilities and commitments as well, both on and off of EB.
  • Q: Do I have to post a story with every build?
A: No. Sometimes builds can stand alone and tell their own story. Don't feel like you have to post an elaborate backstory, just tell the story with your bricks and add any text you feel is appropriate.
  • Q: Can I post a digital MOC?
A: As a free build, yes. (You can also do free builds in whatever scale you like.) In an episode, you have to follow the rules of the episode, which may or may not allow digital builds.
  • Q: Do I have to create a sig fig?
A: No. You MAY create a sig fig, or you may introduce a new character with each build.
  • Q: What time period is SONE 2 in?
A: After RotJ, before TFA. At least for the map movements. Builds can take place during any time period

Other Ways to Earn XP/IP

Era Builds

Collaboratively build some of your favorite events in Star Wars lore and earn IP for your Faction.

To complete an Era Build Challenge you must build 3 MOCs set on that planet in the Era given. All 3 MOCs must be posted together at the beginning of a new thread. Each MOC will be judged as a separate build. You will also receive a bonus for completing the Era Build in the form of an XP and IP bonus equal to the average scores of your 3 MOCs. For example, your 3 MOCs score 8, 5, and 11 respectively. You would earn 24 XP and IP for the three MOCs and 8 XP and IP as your bonus. This would bring the total to 32 XP and IP earned.

IP earned by Era Builds may be used on the Era Build System (if the Faction has access to that System) or the Faction Leader may move that IP to a Sector where they already control one System. So if Faction A earns 40 IP from a Era Build on Coruscant, which they can access through a hyperspace lane, Faction Leader A can choose to post that IP to Coruscant, or use it on a planet in a Sector where they already control a System. The intention is to encourage builders to build popular Star Wars events, in lieu of struggling with poorly defined or unattractive planets they need strategically. Faction Leaders MUST post the coordinates of the Transfer System in the Era Build post PRIOR to the builds being judged. Transfers may not be undone or changed once judging begins. If a Faction losses control of their System in the Transfer Sector or the Era Build System, any IP will be forfeited.

Each topic should have the appropriate heading of [Sector-Planet-Team][Era] Topic Title. For example: "[R6 - Felucia - CFS][Clone Wars Era] Battle Droid Take-Down".

Each person can only complete each Era Build once per planet. But each faction can have as many individuals participate as possible. Members of different factions can collaborate on Era Builds, but IP may only be earned by one Faction (assigned by the heading title).

There are currently 3 different Era Build options that have begun to appear on the map:

Choose Your Own Adventure

Choose Your Own Adventures are a unique challenge for individual players. Each CYOA tells a specific story that the player can influence by making choices that are shown through a MOC. To progress the story your MOC must earn a score of 4 XP or higher. XP (and applicable IP) you earn will count as normal. The CYOAs will be set in different eras and have a predetermined plot so you will not use your own Faction character(s) in your story telling. Some choices within the CYOAs will require specific skills. If your character doesn't have the required skill you will not be able to pick that choice.

Each CYOA will have it's own dedicated topic. The list of currently available CYOAs is below. When starting a CYOA each player will also create their own topic with the title "[CYOA - CYOA title][Sector - Planet - Faction] Player Name". Example: [CYOA - The Arena][N13 - Denon - CS] MKJoshA. Your first post in your CYOA topic should be your first choice and accompanying MOC. After you create your topic, post a link to it in the dedicated CYOA topic.

There is a Tutorial Choose Your Own Adventure for you to practice on if you want. Normal rules apply, except no XP will be earned from playing the Tutorial. This is because no MOCs will be required to progress in the story. It will just help you understand the game mechanics better.

  • Normal XP and IP rules apply. If your faction doesn't have access to a planet that has a CYOA, you can complete it for personal XP but not IP or the completion bonus. The first few CYOAs will be the exception to this rule. Anyone may participate for IP regardless of current access.
  • Each time you complete a CYOA you will get a bonus 10 IP to place on any planet you choose in the sector where the CYOA is located.
  • Each CYOA can be completed only once per player with 0-99 XP, twice for players with 100-199 XP, and three times for playesr with 200 XP or more.
  • Each CYOA will have it's own topic, but each player will need their own topic to play through the story. Links to each players topic need to be posted in the original CYOA topic. For example, all "The Arena" player topics will have links posted by the players in the original "The Arena" CYOA topic.

Current CYOAs available

Tutorial: Abandoned Ship
The Lone Stormtrooper
The Arena

Sorry I nearly missed my introduction in this thread:

My name is Janine Cassandra Solo, callsign "J-9". And yes, Solo, thats right. The Solos are a big family, and besides the Big Han not very rich or influentual over here at Correlia. Until now. I will change that.

46264386911_375dcbdee4_c.jpg20181210_193550 by Jan Südmersen, auf Flickr

My career started at the Empire as a fighter pilot. I piloted the classics, the TIE/LN and the TIE/rb with the 224th mainly in ground support missions at different battles with the Mimbanese guerillias. At this time,  I was shot down more often than I had warm meals. Good thing: I got to know a lot of people. And I knew how the Empire worked. So I left the Army as soon as I could and started illegal trade missions. A lot of illegal trade missions. And so I finally made my experiences with trade guilds and smuggler scum. They are all worthless, but I made big credits during that time. I bought an old Mandalmotors heavy fighter from the Hutt Clan and modified it a "little". I called it the "Scarlacc" and from then on I could attack and rob nearly everyone in this sector. Unfortunately, I tried to raid an YT-1300  and was shot down. Guess who rescued me - my Uncle Han.

44447353880_9a49506680_c.jpgThe Scarlacc I  - a good figher, but not much place inside. The Scarlacc II will be bigger..

Well, he was very convincing that being a Pirate isn't a life for a Solo. And so I had to promise him to stay out of trouble and get a honorable job. Really, I don't need the money. I have enough.  And I will bring my own ship, the "SCARLACC II" which is right now in the making. So - if CorSec needs a good pilot with battle and smuggling experience: Here I am. But please don't tell me how to do things. I deliver and  I solve problems, but I hate rules.

Hi there fellas,

I am RC-2787, a Clone Commando Soldier... or better said, was... achh, whatever.
For outsiders it's Kyrand Harlitt, but my comrades keep calling me "Kyramud".
Kyramud is mandalorian and stands for "Killer".

DSC_0741_Ava.jpg.b205951c372e84aa3c2d172358a5edae.jpg

Who am I? Well, it sounds a bit strange - nearly at the end of the Clone Wars, shortly after the beginning of Order 66, the Kaminoans got the order by the new Emperor, to fondle around with the genetics of us. Some time they tried something new - not to shorten the aging by half, no, they managed it, to slow the aging by half of a normal being.

But the Kaminoans didn't like to get interveined on their doings, so they mixed around and made the clones more... independently once more.
I am one of those last offsprings of that experiments.

So independence influenced thoughts come and go... well, to sum it up, we want to go back to the roots exactly, our Mandalorian roots. The Rebellion is more or less crushed, the Empire scattered across the galaxy - the old forces are no more.
And this exactly is our chance. Without the Sith or Jedi, the people of this galaxy won't stand us a chance. This time under the the command of the Black Sun. To be honest, our brothers amongst the real mandalorians or the clones are wide and thin spread across the whole galaxy. It'll be quite a challenge to gather them and unite them under the banner of the Black Sun to restore our glory and strength in galaxy once more.

As for a true mandalorian, I started to collect things from raided cities, or weapons and armours and thereby saving some credits. Sounds a bit bounty hunter and vagabond like, but that's the way it is and things go nowadays.
I don't have a ship right now, but this shouldn't be a big problem for long.

Hope you guys liked my introduction aaaaaand down there a complete view of my character. :D

Just a question here... but there seem to be a few people using names from the series like Solo and Ren. I'm not sure this should be allowed? Like, doesn't it strain credulity to have a bunch of Solos and Rens running around when these are the names of famous, key characters in Star Wars? Especially the time-frame we're working with?

I know I find it distracting but maybe I'm the only one?

What rule would your write to fix that? Would it be worth the extra restrictions?

Right now the Faction Leaders can say who joins their faction. If they don’t like the names they can refuse the recruits. If they don’t care and a faction becomes full of Obi Wans and Palpatines, and builders dislike that, builders can choose another faction. That way, the factions that best represent the material will have more recruits and attract more builders, so it’s a self correcting problem without extra rules.

Inaccurate world building will also be considered by the judges.

I think it's easy to make a rule that prevents this, just stipulate that everyone makes 100% original characters within the SW universe. I don't see what's lost there. What's gained is greater immersion and integrity for the world of the game, which is an established world. Allowing people to just borrow names and be unoriginal is one thing, but everyone trying to create the third secret Skywalker sibling is a problem that I'd argue the Faction leaders will not want to have to solve later. I honestly don't think it's self-correcting. I'm surprised this wasn't a rule to begin with, but I was probably interpreting "please make it appropriate" differently than intended.

@mccoyed Well I'm not a faction leader so I can't say much about restrictions but I don't particularly mind seeing some characters share names, though I can see your point. For my character, I was just re-using a name and had forgotten about Kylo Ren. I've changed the name in case I ever want to put Kylo Ren and my character in the same room.

But still, nothing wrong with some creative freedom I think. Its a fan-canon after all.

@mccoyed now you have to define what “100% original” means. It becomes a mess. I trust the Faction Leaders to work with each new builder to do what define the world as they see fit.

Side note, I wouldn’t have allowed a Jedi recruit in the CFS. But I wouldn’t care if an Antilles or even a Dooku joined

An Antilles or Dooku aren't the same as a Ren or Solo, for reasons that Merc4Hire nicely illustrated. But yeah, if you guys can't be bothered to define original character in the framework of Factions then who am I to try and do that for you? All I know is that I've played a lot of tabletop RPGs (like D&D) including established universes and such a rule is almost always necessary so that players don't fanfic their Gary Stu/Mary Sue avatars in games to the point of distraction and disruption. This is my first time with an established universe RBG so I imagine that whatever worked for SONE would work here.

I leave it to the anointed Faction leaders to deal with.

I headcanon it as either:

1. It is a common name.

2. It's not actually their real name, but if you have to make up a new name to hide your real identity, you might as well borrow it from someone famous.

How many builts a month ?

Or an idea of number of built for a period... just to have an idea ?

As many as you want! I'd encourage spending more time on your builds as that will help your scores and help your to improve your building skills. But there is no limit like in SoNE.
