Kaliphlin at Work - Day 10: Royal Dance

My third contribution to the Kaliphlin at Work collab, and also my first entry to this year’s CCC, for the Interior category. This build was both a joy and a pain to build. Some parts of it came together very quickly, while others – well, they came together less quickly. In the end though, I’m very happy with the result. Credit for the lion mosaic goes to @Basiliscus, I pretty much just copied his design from this magnificent build.

While working in the gardens of Lord Farih’s estate, Nym heard that there was going to be a dance in the great hall. Being the curious and slightly mischievous Dwelf that he is, Nym decided it would be alright – yes, even a fine idea – to slip in and watch the dance for a while. After all, he was sure that Lord Farih had every intention of inviting him, but had just forgotten amidst all the numerous tasks that had to be done to plan a dance.  And what a grand dance it was! The various noblemen and women wore their finest clothes and twirled gracefully around the hall.

Nym was enjoying himself greatly when he noticed some fine chairs set by themselves under elaborate awnings. Curious as to why such grand seats would be left empty, Nym sat down on the right most chair and found it amazingly comfortable. He hardly had time to settle in before finding himself looking down the blade of a very sharp sword.

Farih’s guards quickly made it clear to Nym that those chairs were not meant to be occupied by lowly gardeners, while his own charming demeanor quickly convinced the Sargent that he had no ill intentions – he was merely testing the seat’s cushions, to be sure they were proper for royalty.

After assuring them he would do no further ‘testing’, they politely escorted him out of the hall. What an experience!

Haha, nice little story! The build is lovely, with enough interior details to keep the tan from taking over. And that first shot is just stunning man, great job!

Very fun way to present this from the gardener's point of view, and a magnificent build!  Great work including lots of shields smoothly in the walls, and the canopied throne area plus the elaborate floor are both fantastic.  I also really like the tapestries and the braziers, not to mention the stained glass round window up above the dais!  Definitely an honor to be part of a collab producing builds like this!

That first shot of the moc is just epic! So many details and great fig posings! 

 

The only nitpick is that the mosoic in the middle is hidden by figs. Would love to see that!

This is excellent! A lovely interior build to be sure. The first picture, with the all-LEGO shot, is particularly nice, but it all looks good. My favorite bit is the part on the right wall, just beneath the arches over the shields, where you cleverly layered some different tiles and plates to create an excellent stairstep. The tapestries are quite nice, especially the 1x1 plate with clip for a tassel, and the floor mosaic, even if not original, is beautiful. With all due respect to @Basiliscus, I think it looks better in opaque colors than in stained glass. Kaliphlin continuity is nice either way, though! 

I haven't found anything to critique yet, so I'll give up. The only thing I wonder is where is the band? Or are all of the dancers just dancing to their own music in their heads? They are excellently posed either way. Great entry!

One day I’ll have the parts and skill to enter the CCC... one day... sob! 

In the meantime, builds like this are inspirational and showcase a lot of amazing techniques that I will have to learn to replicate/copy/steal.

The upper floor details are great but so is the scale of this amazing ball room.

And it’s nice as others have said to see things from a gardeners perspective.

Very nice build.  Love the architecture especially all the arches and the railing are great.  The floor pattern is fantastic.  The stain glass windows are a nice touch.  The throne is neat with the small canopies above.  Great job on the figs too.

Really lovely build.  I like the scale, the attention to detail, and all the lovely decorations around the ballroom.  Excellent as usual!

Great build.  Love the architecture, especially all the different arches and the railing.  The floor has a great design.  The thrones are nice with the small canopies above.  The stain glass windows are a nice touch.  The cabinets on the second floor are a nice detail.  Also nice job with the figs.

Another really great entry to the collaboration! Loads to like, such as the panels for the red carpet to slightly raise them above the floor, the tapestries, the minifig posing, all done very nicely.

I'm also honoured to have given you the inspiration for the floor mosaic, it's a shame we don't get a better shot of it. You could always take one and out it up on Brickbuilt if you haven't taken the MOC apart yet.

Fun fact: having done a few mosaics now, I noticed that trans clear and regular cheese slopes have a slightly different thickness, which means that translating from one to the other can pose a challenge.

Amazing job LJ, so many textures, details, and nice colors!  I love the pavilions above the chairs, NPU, and the window is pretty.  My favorite part is the balcony with all the nice banners and details though, brilliant work! And lol, looking down the blade of a very sharp sword  ! certainly the end is rather blunt to say the least!

Thanks Kai! I finally put quite a few of our lion knight shields to use Glad you like the canopies over the thrones, those were one of my favorite parts too.

Thank you very much, HQ! The stairstep is actually created using panels. This page shows how it's done. As for the band, they are definitely in a portion of the hall that isn't shown here - simply for space limitations of course It would have been a good idea to include them, but I'm just not sure where they could have fit. Definitely something I'll keep in mind for next time though!

You don't need tons of parts to enter, and you definitely already have the skill! The 8x8 "Medieval Legend" category would be perfect for you this year, if parts are an issue.

Glad you like the build though! The upper floor details were some of my favorites too

Interesting fact about the cheese slopes, I hadn't known that before.

Thanks! Glad you like the banners. Yeah, plastic swords just don't have that razor sharp edge... no idea why...

Fantastic interior build LittleJohn, it looks suitably grand! So many lovely details without going overboard. The dance floor mosaics, opulent stained glass windows and the canopies over the dias are my favourite parts. Good job shoehorning the scribe in there too!

awesome job, LJ. Believe it or not, I love that wardrobe But this is also full of nice architectural details. My fav must be the use of the plate with rail instead of an inverted slope at the top-right - it looks wonderful oh and that guy with glasses and the book, that is someone's sigfig, isn't it? I can't remember where I've seen it though..

Stunning interior. Your use of of very purposeful decoration instead of wall texture works beautifully
Superb way to give the impression of a thin carpet going up the steps, and the awnings over the dais look lovely. The large book case and golden braziers are techniques I'll be sure to borrow in the future
