New Flickr limits

Recommended Posts

Flickr is pretty unique in that it's THE place for Lego. But it's soon gonna be limited to 1000 pics for free accounts.

While it's a lot of pictures (that I haven't reached myself since 2015), it's not exactly future-proof anymore. Of course paid accounts aren't limited, but I like to think of Flickr as a future-proof online repository, and it might not be the perfect solution anymore.

Is there better, though? Instagram?
I started on MOCpages, but the website is technically a bit lacking, and images were overcompressed.
Maybe.. Bricklink itself (yes it does have a personnal gallery)?

On the other hand, the internet being the internet, do MOCs even exist anymore after a week? On Flickr I'd say yes, through people's favorites. Other than that..

(I also like that Flickr isn't (doesn't seem to be) censored btw. I mean, it's hosting porn, so it's pretty safe as for freedom of speech. Probably only matters for a minority in the Lego community, though. But Flickr isn't something Lego, being the total opposite as for censorship, could own itself. I mean, imagine a Flickr stripped from MOCs of tanks, temples, bars, etc)

Only 1000 per account? Damn it... I have like +5000

I guess that's it for me

The worst thing is this piece:

Quote

If you’re a Flickr free member who already has over 1,000 photos in your account, you have until January 8th, 2019, to download photos over the 1,000 limit. After that date, you will no longer be able to upload new photos to Flickr. And after February 5th, 2019, Flickr will begin deleting files that are over your 1,000 photo/video limit, starting from oldest to newest, until your account contains only 1,000 files.

I really hope Flickr will give a chance saving pictures as archive for non-paying users. Previously, non-PRO accounts could only do it by downloading each and every photo manually.

I'm a bit disappointed by this. I like to upload pictures to Flickr quite often. I've used about half of the allowance I think but have only been on it since February. I like the interface of Flickr and the way you can easily link pictures in to forums and on to other sites.

Instagram is a good way of sharing pictures but they get compressed pretty badly and don't think it's possible to link or download pictures from Instagram. I use MOCpages but find it quite cumbersome and dated compared to other sites.

Does anyone on here use Bricksafe? Is that a good alternative to Flickr? Also what about Brickshelf? I have been trying to set up an account on there for weeks. Every time I try, it fails to let me create an account saying there are server problems and that I should try later. :hmpf_bad:

Bricksafe sounds ok on the paper. Browsing is no Flickr, though.
(it's also proud to be "family safe", not exactly something I like, but that's just me)

Damn - that sucks.  Been a member since 2008, have nearly 4000 photos.

Now I need to decide if it's better to pay $50 each year (and maybe going up each year), or if it's better to reupload 5 years worth of MOC photos to a different site and edit all the eurobricks topics to point to the new host.  :sceptic:

So... goodbye, flickr.

Hello Instagram? Flickr is such a huge part of the FOL community IMHO. I'd hate it if this news means less people will join and be on Flickr. :cry_sad:

Huh. That’s very bad news.... I got 7k images since a decade ago... :sadnew:

Now what will happen to all of the existing hosted images.

They will be deleted. This from Flickr:

After February 5, 2019, free accounts that contain over 1,000 photos or videos will have content actively deleted -- starting from oldest to newest date uploaded -- to meet the new limit.

That will be a disaster here on EB: pics will disappear on reviews, MOCs, etc...

Just in time :( No explanations, see below, I was working on the message that I am or was going to send to someone:

“Yes, so, I feel like the LEGO community on Flickr started to write a lot fewer comments than they used to and the average number of faves have gone down, especially some MOCers now get significantly less faves than they used to get... According to what I see, the FoL community is slowly going towards Instagram. Becoming less active on Flickr/becoming more active on Instagram has both positive and negative factors in my opinion. Below is a small list I created about this that I’m thinking about sharing with the whole community:

Pros:
-You meet with people outside the LEGO community.
-People are more active on Instagram.
-Instagram is more popular than Flickr (in general).
-Much easier to become popular.
-Almost everybody knows they need to put hashtags to become popular on Instagram hashtags unlike adding photos to groups on Flickr.

Cons:
(Still a WIP)
-Low resolution
-The higher quality of fans on Flickr
-LEGO community is more spread out on Instagram.
-Flickr is hosting probably ten thousands of MOCs so it would be a great shame to slowly abandon this treasury.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with people sharing their work on Instagram, what saddens me is the lack of activity on Flickr. I think it would be great if we used both equally!”

The amount of interest I was going to get with my future MOCs, seeing all the amazing MOCs everybody came up with and seeing all the fun that FoL community had was what encouraged me to be a Lego fan. That’s a shame.

On the other hand, 1000 photos is still a lot so a big part of the community might remain to be here but Flickr wouldn’t be same with some of you above and others who will migrate.

Free flickr was 200 photos back when I joined.  I only posted the best shot of my MOC on Flickr and the other shots went on Brickshelf.  I used Photobucket for the "throwaway" insta photos.  I managed to stay under the 200 limit as I wasn't a prolific MOCer.  I had different pics of my MOC on different sites just in case one goes down, go out business or change their service.

In ten years I have 330 photos. So that leaves 700 for me to play with.

Maybe I will learn Instagram a little better, but I only ever used Flickr to host, not to be a community space. So how can I add actually good photos to Instagram?

So there we go, photobucket all over again eh?

I had too much to lose.... Ended up I took up their 30% offer and got my Pro account.. as much as I hate it. There are just too many photos being uploaded onto Flickr on my end.

Flickr pro is a bit expensive for what it is, though. I mean, you can generally get unlimited hosting for half that price these days (ok, hosting services then raise update prices once they hold you by the balls, but still..)

Didn't Flickr always use to have this limit!? I can remember something like that, 4 years ago or maybe longer...

For a while there was an insane amount of storage available. I can't recall how much, as it was so much, uploads would never have been an issue!

EDIT: Then again, I have only put just over 300 in a decade. I think I can manage with only 600 and change for another ten years, and who knows what will be going on then!

Also, just uploaded a good photo to Instagram! Who know what results I will garner, but I shall be comparing stats from EB, Flickr and Instagram...

Flickr's limit is 1TB until now.

Well, we can use Brickshelf, because what's old is new again

JK, I will probably cave and upgrade. If I uploaded LEGO pics alone I'd make the cut. However, I have a massive repository of train pictures on my page (Brickbuilder711) bringing me to 1,600 pics. And one wouldn't want to lose GFLUG pics from 2007-2010... I sure wouldn't. As I tell the train people, compared to the cost of actually doing the respective hobby, 4.17 USD per month is peanuts.

What I find most irksome is that Flickr used to have 1 Terabyte, of free space, and now they figured out it's unsustainable, so screw all the free users. I mean, this is just a cheap shot. I'm moving to Bricksafe. i mean, can't Flickr make some revenue with ads? I'd  say that would be better than alienating a ton of users. I dunno, I'm a little upset. So much so, I made a meme.

It was limited to 200 photos when I joined, too. So after a little while I got a subscription, which was very cheap at the time. I had no idea that the free version was opened up so much since then. Now the cost for subscription has inflated a lot, what else am I going to do...

Is there an easy way to find out how many photos one has? I tried the "request data from Flickr" option where they send you an email, but that was three days ago, and nothing. If I click on "stats" it just wants me to upgrade to Pro.

The number of photos shows on the right hand side of the top banner when I'm looking at my own photostream (via web browser rather than the app).

Hmmm. It isn't showing up for me, but maybe that's because I'm on mobile web instead of a PC (and yeah, the app is not helpful, as usual). However, you got me looking around and I found a web app called Organizr which showed me, so thanks! I just needed to poke around a bit more, I guess.

Looks like I have 1073 items, which surprises me as I'm not that active of a builder. Guess I'll have to cull some stuff, but I'm sure it won't be too hard.

Yeah, I'm stuck here, too.

I had over 2,300 photos as a free user.  After culling photos, including WIPs and whatnot, I'm down to around 1,700.

For me, it's less about the photos than the links.  All my photos are backed up elsewhere, so I couldn't care less if Flickr deleted them.  But to find another service and redo  the hundreds of links is so tedious, there's no way I could be convinced to do it myself.  Which is a shame, since I would hate to break all the images for the stories I've created for the rolebuilding games I've played.

If Flickr had offered additional storage at different levels for one time payments, I would throw down the money and grow my online storage as I needed.  But paying a subscription fee causes me to think long and hard about whether or not I actually need that something.  While I enjoy Flickr's services, it's not something I consume as much as say...Netflix, or Crunchyroll, or Amazon Prime, which I can justify based on how often I use them.

What I'll probably end up doing is biting the fee for one year and spend that time thinking about migrating my photos somewhere else that I think is more future proof.  And unfortunately, I'll have to think about whether or not it's worth re-linking all those photos once I do.
