Not this again, jeez :ugh: You got a great Ideas set (which like others I bought despite not being a "Whovian") and a couple of Dimensions packs. That's it, theme over. Suggest you accept it.

Anyway, back on topic...sadly from the leaked silhouette, it seems it's not a Bond DB5 but a Creator-scale Vanquish :hmpf_bad:

I'm not a car expert myself but isn't that the DB10 James Bond has in the newer movies? That being said IF we do get a figure it'll very likely be Craig. As someone who loves the newer Bond movies this is awesome even though I'm starting to worry we will even get a figure of Bond at all since it's a Creator Expert set

I'm failing to see your point here because one theme has nothing to do with the other

In any case we couldn't even talk about the theme being a replacement for Dr Who because Dr Who has never a theme on its own. It only existed in the Dimensions and Ideas lines

At a quick first glance, I also assumed it was a DB10 (first revealed by AM in Spectre) but on closer look (front skirt and curves) it looks more like an older Vanquish.

That it's placed in the Creator line alongside the VW Camper, Mini et al means there'll be no minifig. So I wonder why they needed/tweeted/promoted the Bond license in that case?

If you feel that way, you could go one further and think of it as an insult to you, personally, since you're clearly the biggest fan of LEGO and Doctor Who.

I'm a bit disappointed it's not a minifigure scale car with a Bond minifigure.

And given the speed that the James Bond group replied, there was clearly some pre-planned marketing going on. Without the James Bond license / link, it will put some off. I was hoping for something along the line of the IDEAS BTTF or Ecto-1 sets.

Assume the hyphen means that the Chinese text reads "Aston-Martin"?

I know they're still current sets, but the juxtaposition of those older utility vehicles alongside the Vanquish looks a bit odd. It needs the retired F40 in there.

Quite. Seems a bit of a p-tease and letdown now, if that proves to be the case. :hmpf_bad:

Oh and looking at the Mini and Routemaster, with an Aston on the way, the obvious gap is there for an old-style London black taxi. I'm calling it now for 2019 release

While I have my own reasons for not wanting a James Bond license to go any further than this one set (whatever that set may be), I do honestly think James Bond would make more profit for TLG over Doctor Who, primarily because Bond is an American film franchise based upon a British subject matter while Doctor Who is strictly British in all respects. Point being, Bond may have broader audiences on both sides of the Atlantic over Doctor Who for those speculated reasons.

Actually Bond films are British made

Yep. Eon Productions is about as British as it gets in the filmmaking industry, not sure why Digger believes Bond is an American franchise.

While they are British made, there is a lot of American money behind them. And of course, a lot of American (in fact, worldwide) interest at the box office which is really the key thing for LEGO sales rather than where / who makes them. Whereas Doctor Who is firmly British with much less American (and worldwide) interest in it.

Yet owned by Americans, which is where the confusion comes from.

Definitely seems to be one of the two, it could even be the DBS from Casino Royale. The DB10 would make the most sense since I guess it’s the most recent iteration, but either one would do. It’d good they’ve gone for the creator scale since if they do move round to doing the DB5 they’ll be ab,e to include all the various functions and gadgets, something a minifigure scale car might not have been able to do.

Maybe they might include a minifigure on a stand, like they did with the Tumbler. The DB10 had an ejector seat, so I guess as well that makes it unique to Bond.

I'm hugely disappointed it's not part of the Speed Champion theme. That seems like such a waste. Have 2-3 Bond cars a year, have dual sets with the 60s and present day models. Even without the Bond figures (which might be a licensing issue) I think they would be much better than another Creator car.

I hope it’s a vanquish so everyone’s heads explode at such a horrible choice.  One of the worst bond movies ever and a bland car to boot.

praying for a bad marketing department and that’s the first AM silhouette they could find. DB5 or bust!

You've got to be joking. James Bond is hugely popular, but it's a fraction of the popularity of Doctor Who. You don't have live shows announcing the next James Bond, or James Bond World Tours.

, if it really did good enough Lego would have made more just like ghostbusters, but it didn’t so please stop complaining and moaning.

The Doctor Who sets made a fortune for LEGO. They sold out in no time, yet for some reason they think James Bond is more popular.

...It's not a competition between James Bond and Doctor Who.  The announcement of a James Bond license (for, possibly, a single set) says little or nothing about any potential for a revived Doctor Who license.  If every license connected to Dimensions and Ideas had to be exploited to its fullest potential before a new license could be acquired, we'd have a full range of vignettes based on Beatles album covers and playsets for every location ever visited by the A-Team.  Even if you're Doctor Who's biggest fan and you have reams of market analysis to back up your claims about the relative profit potential in a revived Doctor Who license versus a new James Bond license, it's just...not worth getting worked up about.

I don't know why the hell we need to be talking about Doctor Who here at all?

@LEGODalekbuster523 - STOP interjecting Doctor Who into everything. We've told you this multiple times. I'm not going to say it again.

---

Now let's talk about Lego Bond please...

I hope they actually use the James Bond license and include stuff that would make it “James Bond’s” Aston Martin and not use the license just to mark up the price

Ideally we‘ll get something like the DeLorean with parts to build it in 3 different ways. Maybe there will be an instruction for the plain car itself and an instruction and additional parts for a Bond version with gimmicks.

I've gotta say I never expected to see Bond in Lego. Thirteen-year old me would have been ecstatic.

But adult me, who recently tried revisiting the film franchise, says, "eh, the old movies really don't hold up any more. The story, action, and dialogue were usually bad, the sexual politics appalling, the portrayal of race/racism really off-putting, and there is really very little redeeming about the whole franchise, other than playing GoldenEye on 64 back in the day."

Adult me also thinks back on teenage me who read a handful of the books and realized even then what kind of guy Fleming must have been (turns out I was right).

As I said, I tried revisiting the films, and it was rough. I couldn't bring myself to finish half the movies I started, they were so bad. Cinema has come such a long way since the 60's (or even the 00's) in terms of technique and effects, but also the stories we tell and how we tell those stories. Nowadays Bond feels more like a "sexist, misogynist dinosaur" than ever before. (IIRC, those are Judy Dench's exact words from one of the films).

Now I don't think the character or franchise is beyond redemption, and I guess that the film franchise has tried to address its past recently? (I don't know, I haven't seen all the Craig ones, since I find him...bland), but I think it will be interesting to see how they roll out the marketing on this one.

Edit: ah, turns out its probably a car and not a full-blown theme. Well, I take back what I said, then; that is one redeeming feature of the Bond franchise in modern times: the vehicles (and gadgets) always were cool. Well played, Lego.

I never expected them to make a more modern Aston-Martin under the Bond license. I always assumed they'd go for the more iconic and recognisable DB5.

Not that I am complaining, I've been hoping Lego would make a modern Aston for years. I just assumed it would be Speed Champions rather than Creator Expert.

In case anyone is wondering, the Chinese catalogue just says "Coming soon for new products".

Delusional.

Half the world's population have seen a Bond film, and it's a global event whenever a new movie (24 and counting) comes out or there's an actor change. They make BILLIONS. That's why Lego have secured the licence.

I doubt even half your street has seen a Dr Who episode or even cares. Outside of the UK, those figures drop off the cliff entirely.

Look I personally have no interest in Harry Potter, books or Lego sets, yet the fact they're being exhum...err sorry rereleased doesn't mean I repeatedly spam those threads with complaints above how, say, the Twilight series would be more popular and make more money for Lego. Because 1) it's patently not true, 2) I have respect for fellow bricksters who absolutely love HP

Think you'd be better off spending your time on other forums amongst fellow Whovians.

(sorry mods)

...

Back on Aston Martin then, and with Bond 25 soon to start filming, it seems we may already know what his next ride is...

*WARNING! MAY CAUSE EXCESSIVE DROOLING*

The rear definitely has some DB5 in it.
