How the heck has Jang got a copy of this so early?

Ebay. I think he got it from the seller which posted the first pictures of the box.

In the video Jang shows there is a separation point designed into the set to split the set into two halves so it can be moved more easily. 9:30-10:23.

Yeah I saw that, but still thought it wouldn’t stand up to much more than a shift from one shelf to another like that. I’ll have to see when it’s built in the bricks in front of me I guess.

So after watching a review on this set, looks cool.  Main down side I see is looks impossible to reassemble into any alternate track layouts without additional parts.  Guess expert sets are for display only?

I suspect there are a few possible track layouts that someone could come up with.  Think the biggest challenge for a set like this, is its highly specialised and specific, was no doubt incredibly difficult for the LEGO designers to get that track layout to work perfectly, so if you wanted a different layout you will need to spend a lot of time adjusting all the supports.

I would like to see LEGO release a track pack, similar to what they do with the trains.  Which then comes with extra roller coaster track pieces, to allow people to customize their track.  I wonder, and from looking at the speed of the train after the first drop, that it might be possible to do a loop, just need LEGO to produce a loop piece.

I've already explained why that won't happen. Especially not the small size that'd be needed to combine it with the system. It'd be way to tight and the twisting track at the entry and exit (the track does not go straight, but has to offset itself slightly to the side) would cause the train Lego is using to jam.
It might be possible if the loop is large enough (less harsh twisting track where the train could get stuck), but then the first drop (and the whole ride) would be beyond huge.
People need to get their loops out of their heads.

I bet we will see a coaster with a loop soon. Loop pieces aren't required. This Ideas project has a loop and I don't see any reason why it can't be turned into a coaster.

There are multiple reasons why it couldn't be turned into a coaster. It's much, much too small (a loop for an entire coaster train would have to be vastly larger than one for an individual ball piece) and too fiddly (the custom rail system they've come up with would require much, much more fine tuning to work correctly than Lego's prefab track, which is probably the main reason why those track pieces were introduced in the first place). It's possible that somebody could manage to jury-rig a similar loop for a roller coaster in a MOC, but actual sets require a great deal more precision to work correctly out of the box.

Lego decided to build the coaster without a loop, so there won't be an official coaster with a loop the next few years. And if they develop one at a later time, they will obviously produce the right tracks and trains.

For now, it's up to the fans to build MOCs with loops.

You really can't compare a marble run (as awesome as it is) to a roller coaster (which has carts with wheels). There's several major differences which are important. I tried to explain some of them previously, but I suppose I have failed there ...

Of course it'd be theoretically possible to create new tracks and (more importantly) suitable trains, but what's the point of the current system then? I'd consider a new system highly unlikely, especially with third party systems with flexible tracks already on the market. Lego obviously goes for the playability of the coaster. A loop doesn't fit that in any case, otherwise it would've already happened ...

You seem to understand it.
I'm also expecting some MOC creations with some out-of-the-box thinking to make some inversion possible. But there will be some rather unorthodox techniques that need to be used which you'll never see in an official set.

I know, I'm late to the party but Jang's review is really convincing. The Roller Coaster somehow grew on me thanks to him! For instance, I really like some small details like the park and the roller coaster looks nice when two trains work at the same time, and I like how the longer train looks as well. It's also nice to see a Jang's review much before it becomes available to buy publicly, everybody is going to have time to consider whether to buy it or not! :classic:

I love the set, instant buy for me! But what really bugs me - at least on s@h in Switzerland is that the motor piece 88000 is not available on the store... It was the same story with the winter village train...

TLG sells a set, promotes motorized accessories and they are not available.. Even though the other "half", 8883, is available..

What about in other countries?

For me it is not a great strategic move.. I will not wait and buy the accessory at a later stage when it becomes available and have to pay extra shipment fees...

The 88000 battery box will be out of stock, as it is also in the UK,  more than likely due to the fact there are 2 new 'city' train sets just about to be released that will have these in them to power the trains motors, so stock will have been dried up for use with these 2 sets.

I ordered the motor and battery box for the coaster already in anticipation as I guessed there will be shortages as usual.

What do you peeps think stock will look like on release day?

Will it sell out in LEGO Stores in the same day, do you think?

I would think it wouldn't. While its still a great set, one of the best, is large, is a new concept of function, is what a lot of people have  wanted, it's still typically high in cost and doesn't have the same type of following as the UCS MF did. Nor does it have as much big hype around it for the build up to release.

I'd like to imagine you would be pretty safe to go to a store and pick one up day one. I imagine it to be on a lot of people's Christmas wish lists though.

Worst case, you can also use the 8293 Technic Power Function Motor Set.  It has the AA battery box instead of the smaller AAA box.  It'll work but take up more space.  The 8293 set also comes with a M-motor.

The set is big, it has tracks and it is the long anticipated coaster. This generates some buzz causing Lego stores to be sold out quickly. But I do not expect that the level of interest remains above other Creator Expert sets for a long time. The appeal of the coaster is not as aesthetic as most of the other sets, it's just ordinary and taking the price into account it won't be the first choice of the average non-AFOL Lego store visitor.

As you said, long awaited.. but because of price tag, I don't expect to run out of stock on day 1...

So they had this built for display at the LEGO store today and I got to put my grubby little paws all over it, what fun.

Couple of things I noticed, it is quite fragile, don't plan on moving it much, best to build it where it will be displayed. The coaster part works well the trains roll very smoothly and it goes through the whole circuit quickly. The track switching mechanism can be a bit tricky to properly position, for switching trains. You would think it would click in a little better.

The crank for the lift has quite a bit of resistance and isn't very smooth, I feel this will put quite the load on the motor and go through batteries quickly. The chain is very long probably a couple hundred links or more and does have some sort of rubber band tension mechanism that might be causing the lack of smoothness.

All in all the set works flawlessly, looks great and is very large, sure wish I had room for it, would be an instant buy.

Also there is absolutely no possibility of it ever having a loop, it just doesn't go fast enough and would have to be much taller, even though the operation is very smooth.

It's the same with the Irish site - "Available to LEGO VIPs on May 16th. Sign up and become a VIP here." Yet I am signed into my VIP account.
