New to the lego world

Recommended Posts

Hello

I have only very recently discovered Lego, at the age of 26 never owned any until my partner got me some star wars Lego (millennium falcon) which i loved. I have since bought the following

  • BB8 model  (the one thats on a stand)
  • the old fishing village

my partner got me the bb8 model and i recently just picked up the fishing village only because i though it looked cool and it is.

My question is what do people tend to do with sets? do you all buy random ones that you think look cool and just have them on a display or should i go with a theme? Can some one explain what the obsession is with mini figures, i have watched a few youtube vids where the youtuber lists their favorite lego set and each one has ended saying there favorite part of Lego is the mini figures.

i built the fishing village in around 5 hours and i see value in Lego that takes time to build as thats my favorite part and i dont play with it. id love if some one could recommend some cool sets as i find it a bit overwhelming

I think mini figures are cool but not the real selling point for me.

I love all the super hero sets and yea, I make them for display. Sometimes questioned as a bit odd at home with people who don't like Lego when they come over but for me its fun building and making my online vids  :)

haha! ... welcome to the world of Lego... they're all pretty expensive to be honest especially the UCS ones. I'm saving up for the Hulkbuster Ultron edition but that too is expensive, maybe try the lego website for models?

I think its a good thing to take your time and to understand on what is available. There is a possibility certain sets will grow on to you when you have a better understanding what is (currently) available. A suggestion; keep in mind and check often which sets will retire. This will keep you up to date on to which set you should buy first and thus prioritize your focus on.

is it worth trying to get something that is retired? e.g i love some of the toy story lego however it seems really expensive obviously given its no longer produced and although i like the look of it the main bit i enjoy is building a set so if i pay over £100 i want to be building something for  at least half a day

You'll find people do a wide range of things. Some collect and display the sets, some build them and then take them apart some time later for parts, some buy sets with the intention from the beginning to just use the parts and never build what's pictured on the box.

Some stick to just one theme while many branch out and enjoy multiple themes. The majority of Lego pieces are cross-theme compatible and only certain minifigures and their pieces are really theme-restricted. Minifigures is a theme in itself and some just prefer that. The collectable minifigure series (CMF/CMS) is a great source of figure parts for themes that have been neglected in regards to retail sets like castle, pirates, general historic and space themes for example since the CMF line generally has a very wide range of themed characters, while the castles, ships, saloons, spaceports and so-on can all be built using regular bricks available so that's one reason the minifigure series is very useful.

If you like the fishing store then you'll probably like the Creator Expert modulars as well and if you like complicated builds that take a while then Technic is another theme to consider.

Depends how much you really want it. There is certain segment of adult Lego "consumers" that treat Lego like a sort of stock market insane casino commodity so it depends on how much its really worth to you. There are options like bricklinking retired sets by pieces, buying used or making minor color or part substitutions to bring down the cost as well.

Welcome to the wonderful world of LEGO! As people have said, we AFOLs do a lot of different things with our collections. It sounds like you are similar to my brother in law, he likes a good build that takes a little time and then he puts things on display.

I can recommend the Saturn V as a great set that could fit the bill for you.

Also I personally found Toy Story LEGO was nice, but the builds were not the most challenging. The minifigures were more the focus in the sets. Then again, I prefer to make my own LEGO MOCs, designing and creating from scratch.

I stick to pretty much Modulars & Superheroes these days. I’m a set collector, so my sorting habits are quite different from your usual AFOL. I have some sets on display, which gets rotated whenever I feel like a change. And I have a tabletown set up as well.
