Description:

Pax Corlandia was a dangerous incident for all sides involved. With the Corrish occupation of Nova Malto, battle lines were drawn, and names were made. One of these names was Captain Mesabi, who was annointed Count for his bravery (or lunacy?) during the incident. After the whole Nova Malto incident, the Corrington Colonial Council decided to do something to about the troublesome - now Count - Mesabi. The solution was simple: send him to a faraway island.

Isle 14, AKA Keep-Yer-Boots-On, AKA Argentia, was decidedly the right place. Littered with waste from passing ships, cacti, crabs with hats, and mysterious plants, Argentia is perhaps the most depressing of the Islands of the Prio Sea - and a perfect place to keep Mesabi from causing more trouble. Undeterred, Count Mesabi established a settlement on the barren island, naming it after himself. Newly ennobled, he seeks to make the settlement the greatest in the Prio seas, at all costs.

The settlement has grown quickly, becoming a haven for exiles, outlaws, and traders from all known (and sometimes unknown) nations. The WTC unofficially controls the town, despite the protests of the Crown. However, the settlement remains a rough place, and at the same time an eldorado for those looking for adventures, glory - and profits.

Island #: 14
Nickname: Keep-Yer-Boots-On

Geographical Features: This Island is drier than nearby Cascadia, and therefore does not sustain the same moisture loving plants. Instead the island is a haven for cacti and succulents of all types. The soil is sandy and rocky throughout the island, and the tallest trees are the palms on the coast. Many fibrous grasses and spiked prickly plants do well here.
Rumors: It is rumoured that one of the succulents introduced to this island from further east bears sap ten times sweeter than sugar cane.

The old settlement thread from Era I can be found here.

Mesabi Landing Building Guide

The following is a set of guidelines that you can follow when you build in or around the settlement of Mesabi Landing.

The original description of the island states:

Quote

Geographical Features: This island is drier than nearby Cascadia, and therefore does not sustain the same moisture loving plants. Instead the island is a haven for cacti and succulents of all types. The soil is sandy and rocky throughout the island, and the tallest trees are the palms on the coast. Many fibrous grasses and spiked prickly plants do well here.

This means that you should base your MOC on sand-coloured, brown or grey ground. Vegetation should be limited to palmtrees, cacti of any kind, and dry grass. Anything more than that should be given a reasonable explanation.

The buildings in Mesabi Landing are often built with grey bricks and a variety of other colours sprinkled in. More than two storeys are very uncommon. Pathways and roads are often paved with grey cobblestone. A few examples:

Please keep in mind that these guidelines are not strict rules - you can follow them, you do not have to.

Since the old thread had become quite a mess, with approval from @Bregir this new thread has been set up for Era II. My special thanks go to @Ayrlego, whose Jameston thread I used as a template with only minor changes - a very clean design, well done!

I will try to keep this thread updated on time to the best of my abilities. If anybody spots a mistake, please let me know either in this thread or via PM. Thanks in advance!

I can proudly announce:

Mesabi Landing is the first Large City of Corrington!

It is - and always will be - the first Corrish settlement to have reached this size and status. I want to thank all builders who contributed, but most of all @Mesabi without whom this would not have been possible. We did not need some flower expedition. We will not waste our citizens hard earned tax doubloons on silly balls. We will work for an even brighter future!

For the historians:

This goal has been reached. Once our glorious Count Mesabi returns from his expedition to the South he will without doubts have even greater goals in mind already!

13th day of the 7th month, 618

Mesabi Landing

Hear ya, hear ya, ye all citizens of the Brick Seas!

The City Council of Mesabi Landing declares the following ruling to be in place immediately:

Mesabi Landing - largest port in the Prio Seas, Crown Jewl of the Paradise Isles - is known to be a haven for adventurers, enterprising traders and misfits of all kind. Due to the bureaucracy being stretched pretty thin, any visiting ship may be detained for unpaid bets, tavern damage, misrepresented cargo, or poorly filled out tax forms. On the other hand, a visiting ship captain might find such errors or gambling winnings in his favour on a good visit to Mesabi Landing.

As a result, docking in the port can yield unforeseen results - be aware of these risks when sailing to Mesabi Landing. The possible rewards are high though!

Docking in the port of Mesabi Landing is potentially no longer free of charge. The exact amount each ship might have to pay - or earn due to some sort of shenanigans - is up to chance.

By the authority of the Wayfarer Trading Company,

Kadeus Mordo,

Executive of Foreign Affairs

========================================================================================

From the following MRCA turn on, for any ship docking in Mesabi Landing there is a chance to pay a charge. Contrary to other examples in the game, this "tax" is generated randomly though, taking into account the sometimes chaotic nature of the settlement ingame. The process is handled by @Darnok, all questions should be raised via PM (to not clutter the settlement thread).

For details on what to expect, check the spoiler:

Spoiler

Every player docking in Mesabi Landing can use the following procedure. This represents the ship docking in the port in the previously devastated "Sunken District", a rather chaotic and lawless section of the city. Alternatively, a player can choose to dock at the uptown port, in which case these rules do not apply.

After every TMRCA turn is done, for a ship in Mesabi Landing - which does not belong to a WTC member or Mesabi Landing itself - two six-sided dice (short: 2D6) can be rolled. The result, according to the following table depending on the result of the rolled sum, is then applied to the ship:

  • ... The ships crew has run into some serious trouble in one of the taverns. The damage sums up to 25*x DB, with x being the class of the ship (for example: 75DB for a class 3). This amount has to be paid to Mesabi Landing before the ship is allowed to leave.

  • 3 ... Lose a bet with another captain. Pay another player who has docked in Mesabi Landing 50DB. (If no other players have docked in Mesabi Landing, this has to be paid to the WTC.)

  • 4 ... The ships captain has made an error in declaring the cargo. The damage sums up to 10*x DB, with x being the class of the ship (for example: 40DB for a class 4). This amount has to be paid to Mesabi Landing before the ship is allowed to leave.

  • 5 ... You have made a mistake with the tax forms! The damage sums up to 20DB, to be paid to Mesabi Landing before the ship is allowed to leave.

  • 6 ... This looks like a nice place, I'd rather stay! One of the crewmembers deserts - the ships owner has to build and license a small residence in Mesabi Landing before the ship is allowed to leave, or pay 10DB for a new crewman.*

  • 7 ... What a bright, sunny day! Nothing happens.

  • 8 ...  Take me with you! An adventurous soul is sailing with you. He will settle down in a settlement of your choice, with a small residence built and licensed for that settlement by either Darnok or Mesabi.*

  • 9 ... We... have made a mistake with the tax forms... The additional income sums up to 10DB, to be paid to the ships owner before the next MRCA turn.

  • 10 ... The captain is a lucky git at playing cards... The additional income sums up to 5*x DB, with x being the class of the ship (for example: 30DB for a class 6). This amount will be paid to the ships owner before the next MRCA turn.

  • 11 ... WTC Marines party on your ship! Gain 50DB, to be paid to the ships owner before the next MRCA turn.

  • 12 ... The trade went exceptionally well! The additional income sums up to 20*x DB, with x being the class of the ship (for example: 100DB for a class 5). This amount will be paid to the ships owner before the next MRCA turn.

* ... 6 and 8 can not be rolled more than twice each per turn. After that each roll is counted as 7.

Note that ships of WTC players and/or those licensed by Mesabi Landing or the WTC are exempt from this procedure.

The outcome for a 9 roll seems to contradict itself.

If you mean Mesabi Landing owes, it should read: ... We... have made a mistake with the tax forms..The additional income sums up to 10DB, reimbursed from Mesabi Landing.

If you mean the ship owes, it should read: ... We... have made a mistake with the tax forms..The under-charged amount sums up to 10DB, to be paid in taxes to Mesabi Landing before the ship is allowed to leave.
