[ESL A-MRCA] Expedition to the New Haven Sea

Recommended Posts

Willem Guilder stood before the table and carefully spread open a group of maps on the table. The maps were well aged, and he handled them with care.

“Gentlemen, a few months ago, Commodore Hammish Grei shared with me some very interesting maps that had come into the possession of the Crahaish neh Triuri.”

“The Crahaish neh Triuri?” interrupted Philip Janszen, captain of the Far Horizon.

“Yes, I know," replied Guilder immediately, before Janszen could continue. "Don’t get me started.”  Guilder composed himself a bit as he regained his train of thought. “These maps are more than 250 years old, and they describe a group of islands surrounding a sea far to the east. After some time spent studying the maps, the Crahaish were able to identify Corrington’s Celestia and Oleon’s Ile d’Or on this map.” Guilder pointed to a corner of one of the maps, and the gathered men leaned in for a closer look.

01_full_guilder.jpg

“When put together, these maps detail the islands around a large sea southeast of Ile d’Or, which we are calling the New Haven Sea, based on our best efforts to translate what text we can from these documents.”

“Not all the maps are written in the same language,” noted Thaddeus Calvo, the somewhat well-known Eslandolan explorer.

“If I’m interpreting the scale correctly,” interjected Captain Janszen, “some of those islands are far bigger than anything discovered in the Brick Seas to date.”

02_guilder_and_janszen.jpg

“Astute observation, Captain,” replied Guilder. “You are reading the scale properly. There appear to be at least three islands far larger than anything Halosian explorers have discovered, and three others that rival the largest discoveries to date.”

"What languages are these" asked Calvo, looking at a couple of the maps in particular. "I have had success translating other pieces of text similar to parts of these maps, languages similar to those encountered among natives in the Prio Seas, but none of the writing here appears to be an exact match."

05_full_calvo.jpg

“The Crahaish neh Triuri have identified and translated parts of the text written in Cymgrii script," answered Guilder. "Ah, Cymgrii!" Calvo nodded, turning over in his mind what he knew of the language.

Guilder continued: "The sea encompassed by this ring of islands appears to be described as fairly calm. With so many islands of such size, and a large navigable sea, you can see why it is imperative that we learn more about the area. It could contain unimagined resources. So,” Guider continued, “I propose that we send an exploration fleet to the New Haven Sea. Our first targets should be the group of three islands so near Celestia and Ile d’Or, directly to their east and southeast. Two of the islands are similar in size to Celestia, but the other is quite small. I suggest that we circumnavigate these three islands, discerning what we can about them and confirming the accuracy of these maps.”  Janszen and Calvo nodded in agreement. “Then, we set exploration parties ashore on each and gather what information we can, but we keep it brief. After that, I’d like to see the fleet proceed to the two largest islands in the western half of the sea and conduct similar navigation and exploratory efforts.”

“Governor, how many ships are you considering for this fleet?” asked Captain Janszen.

"I have managed to put four ships at your disposal," replied Guilder. "What do you think of that?”

"My disposal?" stuttered Janszen.

"Yes, captain," replied Guilder with a grin, "at your disposal. Cornelius Reyngout always spoke highly of you, and you have performed admirably as you have worked your way up the ranks of the MCTC. But I suspect you have more to offer than merely being a good merchant captain. You will be overall commander of this expedition as well as the ultimate authority on the sea, but I would advise you to also lean on Calvo's expertise." Guilder then turned to Calvo. "You are to lead any forays onto the islands. I am depending on your experience. And I expect you will counsel young Janszen here capably as well."

06_calvo.jpg

Janszen struggled to keep his emotions in check. “What ships?" he finally managed to ask. "You’d need at least one or two well-armed ships to protect the fleet, and I’d suggest having at least one smaller ship that could venture in closer to the islands without risking the larger ships on hidden shoals or such. And we'd need ample cargo space to bring back any discoveries and room for some troops.”

"I think we have exactly that," replied Guilder. "You and Calvo are to go with all haste to Poorvintia, where you are to assume command of La Contessa de Victoria. Escorted by the Blood Diamond, you will proceed to Hojaroja, where you will rendezvous with the carrack Hidalga and the armed sloop Esmerelda and pick up a company of my troops there. From there, proceed to the northwestern islands of the New Haven Sea and begin your expedition."

"La Contessa de Victoria?" stammered Janszen.

"Yes, she is quite the ship, but you have earned it."

"What about my first mate, Anthony Crol?"

"He will take over as captain of the Far Horizon," replied Guilder. Janszen would miss sailing with his longtime friend, but knowing Crol would finally have his own command softened the blow.

Guilder then pulled a key from his pocket. "You will also need the expedition treasury. I have a chest in the next room with 1500 DBs for your use. Here is the key. Don't spend it all in one place!" joked Guilder.

07_key.jpg

Janszen laughed a hearty laugh, a needed break from thinking about what was ahead. "If you run into any problems on the expedition," Guilder continued, "Fatu Hiva and Jameston are both near, but do not discuss your mission with anybody there. If you find the need to return to friendlier confines, I will have someone in Fuerte Unido you can talk to."

Pip Janszen took a deep breath. The next phase of his life had begun. He was ready for the challenge.

A wonderful continuation of the story. I was hoping something great would come of it. And it looks like Guilder insisted on originals for this briefing rather than translated copies.

Hopefully Janzsen will realize how smart it would be to have a Wandering Acolyte along for the journey.

Exciting! :excited:  Glad to see these islands finally getting a bit of love, and I see you've gone all out with this expedition too!

Very nice little room - loving that doorway   The colors are bold but they work well... and they instantly give away the fact that it was built by you!    Looking forward to following this storyline!

Thanks. It's definitely time to get to these islands. I have an Age of Exploration itch I need to scratch! And I'm excited to finally get into the A-MRCA for myself.

And the room goes along nicely with Guilder's office. Eventually I'll have the entire interior of his residence! :pir-grin:

Thank you. I like that candlestick too, so I had to work one in. :pir-grin: And I reused the door design from my council hall MOC.

Thanks. I wanted to do something other than the normal Lego window. I stole the basic hat rack design from someone, but I don't recall where.

Janszen and Calvo set out at once for Poorvintia, where the La Contessa de Victoria was even grander then ever.  However there was little time to marvel at her grandness and soon the Blood Diamond and the La Contessa de Victoria arrived in Hojaroja.  There the Hidalga and the Esmerelda loaded with troops then joined the convoy.

The mighty fleet was now a day out from Fatu Hiva where they had stopped for fresh water stores and resupplied as they did not know what lay in the unknown.

Janszen stepped out onto deck and was greeted by Calvo.

Commander what are your orders for the expedition?

Commander ... Janszen was still getting used to that, but none the less he had decisions to be made.

Option 1) Lets keep the fleet together for now and explore the first island.  (Choose which island you wish to explore first and show how you plan to explore it.  One build required)

Option 2) Guilder wanted us to cover ground faster so we should split up into two groups.  (Two islands must be chosen an separate builds be made showing how each island is explored)

(Exploration methods could include but are not limited to coastline, landing for inland expedition, etc.)

Note: 1 build is required for turn progression, however if choosing option 2 then two builds/vignettes are required, more are encouraged to aid your own story progression.

"That still sounds odd ... Commander" Janszen thought to himself. But he had been pondering the question for some time before it was asked, and he had already arrived at his answer. "For now I want to keep the fleet together. We are entering the unknown, so let's be at our strongest while we get our sense of this new sea."

Calvo nodded in agreement, but Janszen continued before Calvo could speak up.

"The first island on the charts should be a point north of east from our current position," he said as he motioned with his arm the direction he described. "Once we have found it, we shall circumnavigate it as Guilder instructed, and we will search for a good landing spot to send you and some men ashore for a closer look."

"Very good, commander," replied Calvo. He too thought it was wise to keep the fleet together, at least for now, and looked forward to setting foot on the island.

After a few days of anxious boredom, the lookout from the Hidalga cried out "Land, ho!" and the news was quickly signaled to the other ships of the fleet. Janszen sprang to his feet when the news reached La Contessa de Victoria. Consulting his charts, he instructed the helmsman to proceed north and then around the island to the east. Lookouts on each of the four ships scanned the island's coast through their looking glasses, as did Janszen and Calvo themselves, for any clues the island might reveal about itself. The circumnavigation of the island proceeded nicely, and confirmed the accuracy of their map. After conferring about where to anchor, a suitable location was decided upon. Calvo and some men transferred to the Esmerelda, and while La Contessa and the Blood Diamond stayed away from shore, Hidalga and Esmerelda, with their shallower drafts, anchored closer to the island in a suitable bay. The longboat lowered, Calvo and his men then rowed to shore.

island_1.jpg

Calvo's task was straight-forward: look for signs of inhabitants, and for any animal or plant life or minerals that were significant, either profitable or hazardous! Every island was different, Calvo had learned over the years. What would he encounter on this one?

@Capt Wolf

The authenticity of the maps had been confirmed and the Island was readily identified as Isle #1 on the map of New Haven Sea that Guilder had provided.

Calvo’s team had landed and once the boats were secure one of the men was assigned to make notes of the fauna and creatures.  As the team journeyed inward, the Island was not that different from those already settled nearby.  Once away from the beach the ground gradually turned into rolling hills with dense trees.

There was a definite feel of something’s presence as if the men were being watched from above.  Like some sort of creature but none of the men could Identify what or where it was.

Calvo instructed the men to stay alert, but keep pressing onward.  As they neared the edge of a clearing the men saw several dwellings high in the treetops all intertwined with walkways.  The team explored the village from the ground.  It clearly looked inhabited, and not at all deserted.  Something was wrong though … there were no usual movements of a village, no strange half hidden glances of curious strangers.

The scurries in the treetops continued … along with a strange clicking, still none of the men could make out who, or what it was.  Suddenly it was apparent that the treetops were alive with action.  Calvo’s men began to take up a defensive position eyes upward.

But, before any orders could be given, Natives dropped from the sky surrounding Calvo and his team.  While being held at spear point Calvo reassured his men to stand strong and show no fear.

W .. wha … what’s a matter with their eyes sir?” one of the men questioned.

Calvo had never seen it before personally, only heard stories.  The natives' eyes were all clouded, almost milky and somewhat opaque. The movement of the Natives was almost as if they were hunting the air for a scent.

Calvo replied to his Men “I believe they are blind . . . move easy men.  I don’t believe they want to hurt us, they are merely defending the village.”

How should we proceed Sir?

-          Move extremely slow and stay downwind we can slip right past them and continue the search of the Island.

-          We should lay down our weapons and try to communicate diplomatically that we mean no harm.

-          Enough of this foolishness, overtake them and sack the village - we are claiming this Island for the glory of Eslandola!

One build is required for turn progression showing how Calvo responds to his situation. More however are encouraged if helpful to your story progression.

Calvo replied to his men: “I believe they are blind . . . move easy men. I don’t believe they want to hurt us, they are merely defending the village. They’re just as afraid, if not moreso, than you are.”

05_afraid.jpg

“How should we proceed, sir?”

...

“Slowly set your weapons down by your side. Now, Muldoon, hand me some of those sweet berries we found earlier.”

Once Muldoon retrieved the berries from his satchel, Calvo slowly extended his hand, palm up, holding the fragrant berries out toward one of the natives who seemed to be in command. The native cautiously moved closer, recognizing the sweet scent. He took some of the berries from Calvo’s hand and took in their fragrance.

06_berries.jpg

Then the native made some clicking noises and his companions lowered their spears. Calvo’s men sighed in relief.

"Share something fragrant with them, men. Move slowly and do as I did."

The men extended food items from their kits, holding out dried fruit or pieces of dried, salted meat. The natives quickly understood and shared local fruit, as well as parrot feathers -- very soft to the touch! Calvo wondered if the natives could tell how colorful the plumage was! Some of the natives leaned in to smell the gun powder in a powder horn, but clearly did not like it!

Calvo tried speaking a couple of times, but the natives gave no indication that they recognized the foreigners' style of speech. Calvo tried repeating some clicks spoken by the natives, which resulted in an odd laughter from the natives. The natives' language was very different from the way Halosians made their sounds for speech, but Calvo made a few more attempts, and even got what he thought was an approving click from the leader at one point. Calvo made a mental note to himself that he must return in the future to study this language more.

After the exchange of items and the attempts at communication wound down, the leader made some more clicking sounds, and some of his men stepped aside to present a way out of the clearing.

"OK men. Slowly reach down and pick up your weapons, keeping the muskets low, then follow me." (Calvo thought the natives could tell from the smell of the powder how the muskets were held. And he was still not sure whether the natives could see at all, but thought that they had at least some sensitivity to light.) Then Calvo led his men through the opening and out of the village. The natives followed them for a bit, but soon the clicks and rustling in the treetops subsided.

Calvo wondered if this was an isolated village, of if there were more all over the island. Finding that out should complete his initial survey of this island.

Calvo and his men left the village, and set up camp on the beach. Clearly the natives were not as well armed as them, but they were far more numerous and knew the terrain. Even now on the beach, they heard an occasional click and a rustle of leaves. The island was still a mystery to them, but they had options to change that.

Survey the Island by sea: 1 Build required showing the exploration of the island's rivers, and bays. (Will yield the island's Geographical features but not rumors)

Into the jungle: 1 build required showing the island being explored by Calvo and is men (This will yield the Island's geographical features and rumors, but may earn the ire of the natives)

Into the Jungle, gently: 2 builds required showing Calvo and his men exploring the island as peacefully and non invasively as possible. (This will yield the Island's geographical features and rumors)

Back to the village: 3 builds required showing Calvo and his men figuring out how to communicate with the natives, and their village. (This will yield the Island's geographical features and rumors, and possibly other information or rewards.)

More builds are welcome, and feel free to ask questions :classic:

Back on the beach, Calvo and his men regrouped. The men were breathing a heavy sigh of relief that they had dodged any trouble. But Calvo feared they were missing an opportunity.

“Men, I cannot pass up the chance to learn more about these people, but we must continue our exploration. I suggest that you travel up the river and explore by boat. Take care not to disturb any native sites. If you find you must turn back and take a different route to give them a wide berth, so be it, but continue to explore inland.”

There were murmurs from some of the men. “What about you, sir?”

“I will head back to the village.”

Now there were gasps from the men. “What? Sir, you can’t!”

“I think I developed a connection with the village leader” Calvo reassured his men. “I need to learn to communicate with them. In the long run, this will help us immensely. If we can make the native population an asset rather than a liability to this island, it could mean the difference between success and failure to any colonization efforts. Now that you know of them, and they know of you, you should be able to proceed safely as long as you don’t provoke them. If I can’t rejoin you within the month, return to the ship and report to Janszen all that has happened here.”

And so it was that the men set off up the river to explore the interior of the island.

river_close.jpg

Calvo returned to the village, and was well aware of the scurrying in the tree tops that kept tabs on him. Eventually two of the natives dropped from the trees and stopped him, then brought the village leader to him. Calvo used a few words that he had picked up from before: “Ch’ka, ch’ka. Clk, clk.” This was greeted by confused faces on some of the natives, and something like laughter from others. The leader grinned and nodded. He took Calvo’s hand, placed it on his own shoulder, and said “Ch’mika.” Calvo repeated it, then took the leader’s hand and placed it on Calvo’s own shoulder and said “Calvo.” Ch’mika said “Kal’vo.” Close enough, thought Calvo. They had introduced themselves. This was a good beginning.

Ch’mika took Calvo up into his hut, and Calvo met Ch’mika’s family. He was given a space in the hut to sleep, and offered food at meal times. Ch’mika’s son was fascinated by the stranger, and was very helpful teaching Calvo some basic vocabulary, such as the words for berries (“bk-bk”) and bananas “k’nana”).

hut_berries.jpg

hut_banana.jpg

Over the next 3 weeks, Calvo learned much about how the natives (“Ch’karam” was the word they used to describe themselves collectively) lived their daily lives. Calvo’s knowledge of the language grew greatly, although his command was still rudimentary. But it was enough for him to carry on actual conversations with Ch’mika and others. He had successfully conveyed his desire to learn more about the island and find a place for Eslandolans to live peaceably with the Ch’karams.

Calvo also conveyed his need to return to his men. And unsurprisingly, Ch’mika and his men knew where to find them. They took Calvo on an adventure through the tree tops across the island. Calvo marveled at how easily they navigated the maze of branches and vines, and the Ch’karams snickered at Calvo’s struggles, but admired his persistence.

trees.jpg

Before the month was up, Calvo was reunited with his men, who had learned much during their weeks on various rivers. And Ch’mika and his men were showing and telling Calvo much about the island. Janszen would be in for quite a story, with plenty of information for a large report about the island of Ch’kara and its people and resources.

Meanwhile, Willem Guilder had heard nothing about the progress of the expedition, but he had heard of interest in the region from other nations. Time to redouble his efforts!

---

Jack Merker had just received a dispatch from Willem Guilder...

assignment.jpg

"Well, what's it say, luv?"

"It looks as if we can finally leave that dismal little sloop behind, dear. We've been ordered to take command of the brigantine Nightwing. Finally, a proper ship!" Merker read a little further. "We are to sail with the Colonial Storm to the New Haven Sea. As Colonial Storm is the larger ship, her captain will serve as commodore to our little squadron." Merker grumbled a bit at that. "We are to attempt to rendezvous with Captain Janszen's fleet in the vicinity of island #2 on the New Haven map here." Jack looked it over. "Hmmm... ok. If rendezvous is successful, we do as Janszen orders. If we do not meet up with him, we are to proceed to islands #5 and #6 and survey those islands."

"Survey the islands? What the 'ell does that mean. I ain't no surveyor!"

"That's just administrator speak, dear. We'll be exploring an island never set upon by Halosians. It's really a chance to make a name for ourselves, go down in the history books!"

"It still sounds boring as 'ell."

"Well, in addition to it not meeting your standard for excitement, there's one possible catch: we have to find a crew for her ourselves."

"That ain't gonna be no problem!"

"And how's that?"

"Look down there."

recruiting2.jpg

"Ah, yes. Just the sort we need!"

And so Merker and Kate recruited a crew for the Nightwing, met up with the captain of the Colonial Storm, and set sail for the seas east of Fatu Hiva in search of Janszen's exploration fleet.

Calvo returned to his flagship, and the men prepared to set sail. The natives had shown him the island and he had learned much. (Island information and rumours Sent via PM) They had also shown him an old lifeboat with the remains of a famous pirate known only as 'Itasca.' The natives, had left the boat intact, as it was from the strange outer world, but offered it to Calvo. According to his logs, Itasca had terrorized the Merlonic sea 200 years ago, amassing a massive fortune, before he was blown far off course into the new world. He eventually found himself in the remote New Haven Sea and slowly went insane, eventually killing and canabalizing his entire crew. By himself. Before hand, however, he reported having buried his treasure on an island in the New Haven Sea. The crudely drawn map resembled Isle 6. (You may hunt this treasure later)

The ships sailed to Isle 2, where they found the rest of their ships waiting. Having Rendeveued, they prepared to survey the Island, when a lookout yelled from the crow's nest. A Class 3 Carnivorian ship appeared to have struck a reef, and was listing heavily to the side.

Options:

Save the Crew: 1 build required showing Calvo's men rescuing the passengers and crew from the ship. Build should indicated who was aboard the ship, and why they are in the New Haven sea.

Let the Gods take care of them: 1 build required showing Calvo landing on the island. You may be able to loot the remains of the Carnivorian ship next turn. You may also gain information about the Island.

Save the Entire Ship: 2 Builds required showing Calvo's men rescuing the ship, and towing it to shore. The Carnivorians will be very grateful, though the ship will need to be repaired before it can sail again.

Janszen was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the Colonial Storm and Nightwing. They brought much news, including of the activities between the Sea Rats and Prio, and most importantly, news of other nations beginning to explore the New Haven Sea. Janszen told the captains of the rumors he had heard about island #6 (buried treasure form 200 years ago) and provided a copy of the crude map. Then he gave them orders to proceed to island #s 6 and 5, explore them, as well as island #4, and then report back to Director Guilder. And with that, the captains made their preparations and the Colonial Storm and Nightwing set sail for the islands to the east.

---

The news of Carno's exploits in the New Haven Sea were quite helpful when Janszen's fleet encountered the distressed Carnorian ship stuck on a reef. Janszen ordered the boats lowered, and Eslandian sailors helped the Carnorians offload as much cargo and ballast as they could in order to float the ship off the reef.

rescue_1.jpg

Then they set about towing the damaged ship into shore.

rescue_2.jpg

Janszen learned that it was a supply ship coming back from delivering men and materiel to a Carno camp on the island known as El Oleonda, some 800 miles south-southeast of here. Now all the Carnorian ship had was enough supplies for themselves, really barely more than a skeleton crew. Janszen hoped the Carnorian captain could share not only info about the war against Lotus, but any useful info about islands between here and there. Surely they had learned something of the other islands.

---

Meanwhile, some 600+ miles to the east, the Colonial Storm and Nightwing reached island #6...

The Carnian ship was saved, but it had sustained heavy damage. Now, it sat on the shore of Isle 2, with a series of a gashes along the hull. The Carnoans milled about on the beach, mulling over the damage.

Commander Janszen and Captain Calvo sat in the captain's cabin with the Carnish Captain.

"My name is Captain Arnolfo. Thank you for saving my vessel, though I fear the Catfish may never sail again."

"Yes, of course," said Captain Calvo, "we couldn't just leave you."

"I am sorry to have to ask another favour of you," said Arnolfo, "But it would take us a solid month to repair our vessel. Can you help us? I don't have much to give you. But If I make it back to Carno, I can certainly tell the other captains how you did us a favour."

===========================================================================

Options:

  • Repair the Carnish ship:
    • The Carnish ship needs more than a little elbow grease, but your crew can certainly fix it. (1 build required) (This will give you a favour from Carno for later use.)
  • Offer your tools, and your best wishes.
    • The Island needs to be explored, that's why you're here. Isle 2 is small and can easily be explored in a matter of days. (1 build required, showing the island being explored. 100 dbs deducted for tools.)
  • Other priorities
    • We have an important mission. The Carnians are safe and must provide for themselves. We must survey the island from the sea. (One build required, showing a sea side survey)

1 option may be taken this turn.

===========================================================================

MEANWHILE

Isle 6 appeared on the horizon. The island was flush against Isle 5. Captain Merker looked through his spyglass. Was that... a bridge connecting the islands?!? It looked ancient and made of stone. Certainly this was an interesting set of islands.

=============================================================================

Options:

  • Explore the Island
    • The Great Bridge:
      • The Great Bridge connects the two islands. It is ancient, but still seems to be used by the natives. (1 build required.)
    • The Great Statue:
      • A small village composed of wooden huts appears clustered around a tall statue. (1 build required.)
  • Search for the Treasure of Itasca
    • The Lost Ship
      • Itasca's logs report that his ship ran aground somewhere on the south side of the island. Perhaps you can find more information about Itasca in it's remains. (1 build required.)
    • Kingeater's Shrine
      • Itasca's logs keep referring to a place known only as "King Eater's Shrine", but something in his description seems ominous... (1 build required)

1 option may be taken this turn.

===================================================================================

1 build required to continue your story.

Janszen had hoped Captain Arnolfo would be more forthcoming with info about the islands in the area. But surely Arnolfo had his orders, as did Janszen. Information was at a premium, and Carno and Eslandola were both letting little information out.

"I'm sorry, but I must get on with my mission," Janszen told the Carnian captain. "I can offer you our carpenter's tools while we are here, but I can't spare the men to help with your ship any longer." Janszen shook his hand and wished him luck.

Janszen had already ordered Calvo onto the island. Calvo did some preliminary scouting, then gathered his men in a small clearing and gave each a set of orders.

With groups of men exploring specific areas of the island, everything should be covered in a matter of days. And Calvo would be free to investigate anything of interest that they discovered.

Explore the Island

  • The Great Bridge:
    • The Great Bridge connects the two islands. It is ancient, but still seems to be used by the natives.

What Merker discovered is that the ancient bridge was not man-made, but rather a natural phenomenon. It was clear, however, that the natives used it regularly, as vegetation was worn away from the path and stone steps were worked into the incline on either side. A couple of crewmen from the Nightwing rowed Merker and his first mate, Kate, to shore. As Jack and Kate explored the bridge from above...

...the two crewmen braved the rough waters to take a closer look at the rocky underbelly of the bridge.

Back on the Colonial Storm, the captain made plans to investigate a small native village they had spotted. But Merker was already hatching a plan to find the treasure of the Itasca...

Now the question is, when Jack falls, will he make a hole in the bottom of the rowboat?

Great rock formation!

Great job with these scenes, Capt, rock arches are always fantastic, and this one's no exception!   Even if it is rock it doesn't look incredibly safe, though
