a little update.

the crosses are rotating very wobbly (cause of the universal joints in the arms), iam rebuilding the arms. the arms will be 4 studs wide.

Head progress

it was to small in my opionion. So i have rebuild it.

its now 16 studs wide and iam busy buiulding the "octopus" on the head.

But... it will be no octopus.

I rename the machine in Turbo Spider.

Om top of the head will be a spider and also around the machine there will be a spider "layout" with webs and so on. on every seat there will be a mini spider.

here some photo of the progress of the head for now:

nice detail: the legs of the spider on top are glow in the dark...i thought it will be nice..

Here an update

i finished up the seats (except the lighting because that is for the finishing touch)

Drivetrain of the crosses

I had to rebuild the arms 

because of 5 universal joints the rotation was very bumpy (it appeared in fases of a quarter turn)

i rebuild it, arms are 1 stud wider, but the weight has stayed the same

problem solved

Drivetrain of the lower cilinder

The lower cilinder makes it possible to adapt the rotationspeed of the crosses.

it was connected to 1 gear on the cilinder, but at a test spin it appeares to weak. it slipped a little

so i rebuild it.

now 4 gears drives the lower cilinder.

Better and no slip anymore

Liftcilnder upgrade

I upgraded the drivetrain of the lift cilinder also.

now i used a type 3 turntable and its driven by 4 gears around it.. no slip anymore

Building the structure around the ride

i started to build the structure around the ride.

the support for the plates underneath is by 16 pieces of 46 long beams.

heres a photo of how the supportbeams will be connected to the underframe (an impression of how wide the total project is)

A short spin test with 1 arm.

The rotation of the cross (with seats) is powered by the lower rotating cilinder.

a simple test, but effective. 21 gears are needed to rotate 1 cross.

I have the impression the seats and the rotating crosses are too small in relation to the entire machine. It seems the scale is not entirely correct?

After reading this comment I noticed so too... Might want to make them bigger. But awesome job so far!

You guys are right about the scale. seats wil be adjusted and will be a little bigger.

But first i will make everything work properly.

Did you orient the joints correctly? This influences the smooth motion quite a lot:

Dude. I want to thank you.

I serious never was aware of that :)

Nevertheless the arms contains 3 u joints now instead of 6 btw(!), the allignment wasnt right.

I fixed it and the rotation is now good

Yeah, I didn't know about the universal joint alignment either. @Ludo Visser posted it in the Akiyuki Project thread, which was really helpful.

This project is amazing, I can't wait to see the final running version! Thanks for all the updates, it is fascinating!

Update:

seats adjustments

i made a new design for the seats.

I looked at the scale and indeed...the seats are to small:)

so i adjusted a little.

back of seats are longer now. a bow around the seats and the cilinders on the back bigger.

the scale is now right.. i didnt want to get rid of the blue technic seats, so i did it this way

only building it will be next week i guess. i ordered the necessary parts already:)

Like i promised...i changed the seats. i made them like the design in ldd.

Explanation lift system

I litle information

i received a few requests to explain how the liftsystem works.

So here is a scematic of it.

I undressed the system a little to be more clear 

i used a wormgear to prevent slipping and to get a low strong ratio

the wormgear drives 2 gear racks that pushed a beam up that is connected to the liftrack.

btw: NOT on the scematic is that i used 2 wormgears and 2 hard springs under the liftrack for extra sup[port. but maybe the sceme is not so clear to understand

the liftcapacity of the system in the polyp is 3,4 kilograms. 

gauranteed no slip of gears (or the gears must brake)

The building around the liftsystem has to be very strong also.

I made a total shot of the machine (without the underframe)

just to see if the scale of the seats compared to the rest is right.

the arms are a little to wide (compared to the real thing)  but with the supports and drivetrain in the arms its unavoidable.

The scale of the whole picture is perfect

so thnx for the suggestion for making the seats bigger :)

Looking good! Much better with the large seats. However, still some problems with the scale. The entire middle structure is too big compared to the orginal, but I'm sure nothing can be done about that. The curvature of the arms is also incorrect, but that's how the Lego beams are so nothing can be done about that either. Nice job.

A little scale comparison:

The Lego polyp is build in a scale of 1:17,2

 

In real life the Polyp measures: 1940 cm

So the Lego polyp should be Lego 112 cm

Its 110 cm. So..ok

 

Center unit measures on the real model: 248 cm

So the Lego version should be 14,4 cm (18 studs)

Its 16,8 cm (21 studs). its only 3 studs too wide 

But i cant decrease the diameter because of the liftsystem)

 

Seats

Real: 140 cm

Lego should be : 8,1 cm (±10 studs)

Its 10 studs. so ok

 

Head:

Real life: ± 200 cm

Lego should be : 11,6 cm (±14,5 studs)

Its 12,8 cm (16 studs). only 1,5 studs too wide

 

But i can adjust this one, i shall look at it

So the scale is a littlebit off. but i can live with that.

the whole machine looks great in my opinion

Take a look at the curvature of the arms: its correct (the arms are a little to wide but like i said earlier, that is unavoidable)
