Heroica RPG - Quest #159: An Unexpected Return

QM Note: Sorry folks, this round was a long one to run (2 hrs)

The Party clashes with the newly arrived enemy forces as the sounds of the melee echo up and down the streets of Eubric. Leona duels with the Town Watch inspector as the archangel once more utters a holy command before finally dissipating from the battlefield. The High Guard take up a defensive position, but the enemy ballista still seem trained on their targets. The Lion Knight Skirmishers once more pull their shields forward to form a protective wall, sheltering the Party from devastating hits. Atramor tosses his critical scroll over to Matthias who begins his chant of the mesmerizing incantation. At last the Arrogate is pulled over to the heroes side as Bellanotte continues her Lucky Chant. Dyric brings down the two Town Watch snipers with expertly placed crossbow bolts and deals considerable damage to his other targets. Torc scoops up the party and rains down death from above along the enemy line. Hoke stays aboard and prepares for a leaping attack as Althior lets loose a fire ball into the midst of the paladin forces. The Town Watch and Paladin troops begin to close in on the heroes and the group begin to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of enemy combatants. Dyric goes down, a lion knight archer is killed, and even Torc takes a lance to the side.  The party now find their backs to the wall of the hovels allowing them a chance to escape during the next turn behind the security of the district.

I think you forgot to account for Dyric's Defense against the Prophet, he should be up with a whopping 5 health. :laugh: How does escape work? Do we use a Smoke Bomb or do we just need to survive this last round?

QM Note: Damage for Dyric = ((150+60)/4)-6 = 46.5 Damage, I also noted that I forgot the Prophet's hastened damage, so Torc is also down.

Oh right, I forgot that they combined.

 

Atramor smirks at the success of the guard and paladins backing off, and even moreso as he sees Matthias enthrall one of their leaders, but as he turns to thank the gnome, he sees Dyric and Torc struck down by the paladin prophet.

"Damn it! Alright, everyone get ready to retreat, we gotta get behind this wall before we're overrun! Matthias, Althior, if ya' can get your magic workin' overtime, it'd save us some essence later, but don't forget to flee!"

Luke uses a Phoenix Essence on Torc if she isn't already revived, then flees. If he hasn't been revived, Atramor empties a Phoenix Essence to revive Dyric. He then flings a Smoke Bomb into the ranks of the enemy, and with a swift turn of his coat, leads the party into a retreat.

All the other Lion Knights flee.

Hoke vaults into the air, only to see Torc skewered.  He wants to land with full force, smashing the enemy below, but he sees Luke reviving Torc and Atramor through something with smoke coming out of it.

A smoke bomb.  

Hoke hadn't seen one of those in a long time, and his stomach twist with the thought of not being able to defeat his foes.  But, he would follow his allies to fight another day.

Hoke lands then flees.

Feeling the essence take hold, Dyric rises to his feet in time to be shuttled off in the wake of the smoke bomb. His hands clutch for the next few bolts, but the action is over. He flees.

We almost had them, he muttered. Stirring himself of the haze, he takes stock of those present. With a grim nod, Rone steps towards the leader of the Knights. Ma'am. Dyric Rone, we didn't get the chance to exchange pleasantries before the fighting. One of the archers went down in the fighting, I'd like his name, as well as any form of identification he had on him - if that would be allowed, of course. This is war now, and he died in the service of that war, fighting with and for Heroes. He should be remembered for that. 

Atramor! he said, when that conversation was finished. What's our next step?

Matthias patches Atramor and Luke up as they in turn revive Torc and Dyric. With a shout the rogue lobs a smoke bomb that fills the street with a cloud of dense smoke. The party dashes through the gate into the hovels and slams the portcullis down behind them. Severing the counterbalance chains to the gate, the party ensures the foiling of their enemies pursuit.

As Dyric runs for the hovels he glances back and spots an elderly man dressed in white, with a black tricorne upon his head, a soot covered cloak about his shoulders walking among the paladin and town watch forces. In an instant the diamond embedded staff he caries glows with a holy light and the rogue watches as the fallen paladins, priests, inspectors, town watch guards and patrolmen are brought back to life. The man looks in the heroes direction before giving a sign for the majority of the men to retreat back into the center of the city. As the street grows quiet, magical springs of water centered from the nearby Ziegfried Mansion begin to shower the surrounding neighborhood with a cool rain, slowly dousing the fires the battle had lit.

The knight smiles grimly at Dyric's request.

It's... it's himMuttering to himself, Dyric meets the old man's gaze. A cold shiver runs down the younger Duplovian's spine. He could only watch, useless, as the dead rose to their feet. He'd heard the stories but...

I should have figured that when Arthur said he brought friends, he meant you. Yes, this beat' has treated me well since we... liberated it from the Dread Pirate's forces. Say, did you ever catch him? I do hope he found some justice for his crimes. Rone turns to young Knivetongiving a brief bow of respect.

"Far as I'm concerned, anyone supportin' us, warrior or otherwise, is a damn hero, and is gonna be remembered like one," added Atramor, nodding in agreement with Dyric. The rogue was panting rather heavily what with the smoke and the arduous battle they'd endured, and he was quick to quench his thirst with a Mead, inhaling a bit of Smelling Salts for a pep up as he looked to Bellanotte and offered her a Grand Tonic.

"That feels like a month ago," mumbled Atramor off-handedly, before straightening up. "But aye. I'm thinkin' that you could pick up the trail of the party that went after the Oracle here, Dyric. We need to work on reunitin' the parties now that we have a target, some information, and reinforcements."

"And great work, ya'll. That was a damn close one, but it coulda' gone a hell of a lot worse. We kept our heads and got it done, all we can do in this sorta rock-and-a-hard-place kinda deal."

Sounds good to me. The Oracle party... that was led by Boomingham, right? And Karie led the other party? In that case, I don't suppose you would mind me taking Bellanotte with me? After all, Karie is a minstrel, and while I would love to see the destructive force two minstrels can whip up, for now it's probably best to split up our forces best we can. 

Rone turns to the young womenIn the end the choice is yours, of course. You've been a huge asset to this team, and I appreciate the help. When Heroica's doors open again, you'll be just as welcome as your brother.

"You're sayin' you wanna split this whole party to find both other groups? Risky, but if they're both in trouble I'd say we'd be more'n capable of helpin' 'em out. Althior is capable of trackin' too, I think..."

The rogue leaned against a pillar and frowned in thought. Dividing their forces was dangerous. He glanced at Bellanotte for a moment, then at the Lion Knights, and the roof of Ziegfried Manor peeking over the wall. They had allies, and every second they wasted was putting those allies in further danger...

"Matthias? Hoke? Althior? What do ya' think? Splittin' up's a gamble, but I think if we're careful, smaller groups might be able to avoid bein' spotted easier. The Lion Knights can lay low at the Dragon House and keep an eye out if the paladin or watch rolls through: unless ya' think you and your men can hold the wall itself, Miss Kniveton."

Rone furrows his brow, the haunting image of the older Duplovian still clear in his mind. 

...yes, that was him. Or at least it was a shadow of him. Someone has duplicated all of the Founders, Luke, and filled them with old memories so they think they're the Founders. But they're not. We were able to find a necromancer and have a commune with the real Dragonlord, who was long dead. Not only that, we were also able to kill the fake Doomsayer. He was decidedly not the original, he was constructed out of some sort of refined faerie dust. These fake Founders are making a mess of Eubric and have locked up Heroica. It sounds like they've set up their bastion at Fort Freedom, so once we round up the rest of the Heroes still in town, we'll be concentrating our attack there.

I mean, I just wanted to split up our Minstrels, but splitting the group as a whole isn't a bad idea either. Say, if we can establish ourselves in the Hovels... we might just be able to turn the Town Watch's wall against them. Make this place a base of operations instead of a prison.

Got more than a bone to pick, but there's more'n enough bones to be pickin' right now, it's like a...fish carcass out here there's so many damn bones. Dyric gives a dismissive chuckle. What, they just swept your hot-shot sniper from under you? I never figured you for the careless type, Ulric.

Excellent. Home base it is, then. I hope you don't mind us keeping a battalion of Knights on your doorstep, then. 

Oh, but if you have any dead, you should dispose of their bodies however you feel is most respectful. Our enemy has a necromancer on their side. He's... powerful.

You two should know, we did our research. The Founders running around now are certainly a fake.

After the party is safely behind the closed gate, Hoke checks over Torc, gently stroking her scales, inspecting the places where she was pierced as the party discusses their next move.

He sees the wolf and can't help but think he had already killed it once while it was trying to steal some wine or something.
