For some time I have been thinking about building something with rocks and lava. I started designing Darth Vader’s Castle for a Star Wars event back in August, but soon realized I wouldn’t be able to build it within 2 months. Thus, I abandoned the idea.

As it happens I also wanted to build something from Lord of the Rings. It’s one of my favourite stories and surprisingly I haven’t build anything of that theme before. Combine rocks, lava and Lord of the Rings and this is what you get: Barad-dûr, Sauron’s stronghold in Mordor.

I really enjoyed building my Cinderella Castle on 1 baseplate of 48 x 48 studs and decided that Sauron’s fortress had to fit on 1 baseplate as well. Somehow it was easier to design this digitally starting at the top and ending with the bottom. The model took about 4 months to design and build, contains about 6300 parts and is about 67cm in height. For the lava I used Light STAX layered with transparent orange plates and tiles. I think this is working really well and it gives a nice glow to the black walls and turrets of the fortress.

And now a couple of pictures. You'll find many more pictures on Flickr.

Brilliant! I see a lot of great little details here. The glow works well too. I like the approach of limiting the scale to a baseplate.

I have been wanting to do a Barad-Dur mini scale since seeing an Orthanc mini scale that I built from looking at pictures online. So I wanted to build one to that scale. Mine will have to be smaller than this, but I can see taking away some good ideas here (with credit of course).

Keep up the great work. Always fun seeing microscale, LOTR, or both!

This is gorgeous, those two shots look fantastic, it really tricks the eye as is perceived as bigger, the amount of shapes, textures and forms truly bring it to realism. (Even if based on fantasy)

The tower looks excellent. So gloomy and majestic, and very organically peeling itself out of the rocks. Its perfectly catching the image from the films. On top of that, the lava surrounding gives an excellent effect. Really enhances it. Now of course I'm curious how it looks like in darkened room! :classic:

Tremendous rendition of Barad-dur! The whole build looks like something you could buy in a model shop  The various details of the tower itself, and how you incorporated it into the cliff at the back works great :classic:
