Well... that's something different and efficient. I love the parts usage for the oars and rowlocks. Good job, thinking outside the (LEGO) box!

I've never made a Lego boat mainly because I don't own any hull, but this mechanism is so cool that I'm going to build it. Maybe, I'll make my own hull.

I may have to invest in some boat hull sections. I would love to do a Viking ship using this. Should be fairly simple convert the mechanism to multiple oars per side.

That should be possible - an earlier version (it kinda worked, but ended up being too heavy and complex):
