Using the Motor of 60051 inside 7745

Recommended Posts

I do apologise if this has been asked before, I've tried searching and couldn't find anything.

I recently got my old 12v High Speed Train (7745) and track out of storage so my daughter and I could play with it but the motor no longer works.

I am considering buying two X 60051 sets to make one extra long 60051 and then using the extra motor to power the 7745. I've done some reading and it seems that the old 12v track and the new track is largely compatible with a few extra bricks to join the two types of track together (I won't bother with the metal central rails for the 12v track since it is pointless without the 12v motor).

From looking at videos it seems that the 60051 motor will fit the 7745 with a bit of modification to fit the battery pack inside the 7745.

Before I take the plunge and buy them can you confirm that this will work?

If it works then we'll have an instant massive layout with two working trains! I've got a load of 12v track and the 9v track from two 60051 sets would be very nice.

Yes it will work. As you said, you will just need to build an homemade adaptator with plates to connect grey era tracks with modern RC/PF tracks.

The 9v motors were designed to fit the form factor of the 12v motors, and then the PF motors were similarly designed to be backwards compatible in size and shape. You may have need for one additional modification. The PF train bases have 2x2 holes to get the connectors through while the old 12v and 9v have 1x2 holes. You might be able to squeeze the PF connector through the 1x2 hole, otherwise, you might need to replace the train base with a plate built bottom. Assuming you are only modifying one car, the train bases extend one plate below the top of the motor, so you might need to go only one plate tall at the location of the trucks on that car (you can use a 2x6 technic plate for the hole for the truck)

I did the same with 7740 and I can confirm that it was really difficult to get the end of the PF lead from the motor through the 1x2 hole in the base, and then almost impossible to get back the other way again! I second the suggestion above of using a plate built base if possible as the ones from 60051 are four studs shorter than those in 7745.

My 7745 is 7 cars long and runs with power functions.  You can buy the LED lights for $7.99 CAD online at the Lego store, I did some mods to the 7745 and the LED lights poke through (once you remove the prisms on the 7745 easily).

It's hard to feed the wire for the Pf through the base for the 7745, I had to tap might a couple of times with a weight brick to force it through.  The other thing that I did with the 7745 train is alter the roof from 33 degree slopes to 45 degree ones.  The painful thing will be acquiring the ones to form the front end.  I've left all of the other cars @ 33 degree roofs.  You can barely notice and that's if you're really looking.

If you have 2 X 60051 you will only be able to complete one middle car extra before buying extra pieces.  The 7745 actually goes with the 60051 pretty well.  Unfortunately the pic below is the back of my 7745 which still has the 33 slope roof, and no power functions.

How did you test the motor to know if it was broken??

When they haven't been used for a while they tend to run like crap.

Make a small oval or circle of track.  Check and double-check the track for connections.

Make sure that you're using the 12V plug on the Transformer.

Wipe down the metal rails with a cloth.

Still nothing??

Take the motor and hardwire it to the Transformer.  Turn the knob slightly (not even half throttle), still nothing??

It will run like crap for a while if you get it going, but speed up.  I wouldn't give up on the motor so quickly those things are pretty robust!!

The motor does work a bit, it tries to move with just the motor, but it isn't powerful enough to pull a carriage. It has almost no power at all. I will give it a run at the weekend and see if it warms up. Thanks!

Thanks for all your useful replies, I've just ordered one 60051 to see how it goes!

hi

I am a specialist of 12v trains. I believe your 12v motor works.
Have you used a step up/down 220v-110v transformer? (not just a travel transformer, that wouldn't work)
