Lego 60th Anniversary sets 2018

Recommended Posts

I don't think they will be.  I think maybe the packaging will reference the anniversary, but beyond that there is nothing.

Not taking advantage of this anniversary for releasing sets representing Classic themes like Castle, Space, and Pirates is a huge missed opportunity in my opinion.

Yes, the most specialized parts are basic minifigure hairs and the apple piece.

Had any of the other four sets featured minifigures, or was the largest set the only one?

1-2 minifigures for every set except the smallest one (Rainbow Fun), which has none visible.

I share your thoughts, but 2018 release is far from being over, it just begin :sadnew:

Presumably, they're just generic male/female City type minifigures?

Perhaps we could be expecting something special for second wave of Creator sets. :shrug_oh_well:

Except for the mostly hidden figure in the traditional skull + crossbones pirate hat, yes.

However you've might have seen these sets, was there anything else from other themes you also could've seen?

On the 2018 Sci-fi discussion topic, EB user @Umbra-Manis said he has seen the box art for at least the largest set, and has described it as follows:

I also saw the box arts for the sets. You can also do that: just go to familienshopping24.de and search for 10401/10402/10403/10404/10405. But 10405's box art is very blurred and they all are just preliminaries.

First impression:  Lame.  I'll have to look at the full parts assortment before further analysis can be made.

Well, set no. 10404 does come with both a Castle and Classic Spaceship as shown on the box art. :sarcasm:

I must say, the box art is rather different, especially with the Lego logo in bottom right hand corner instead. And yeah, the only thing it seems that differentiates this line from the classic theme are the minifigures. :sceptic:

I'm half wondering if this is Lego simply using up the last stock of a whole bunch of random parts; and claiming it's a nod to all those people who complain about insturctions and specialised parts and you can't build anything with modern lego and back in the good old days you used your imagination...

A bit disappointing. BUT, I like the inclusion of the classic styled minifigures, some decent pieces, and the cool printed tile. Not as bad as I thought they'd be, but was certainly expecting more.

Officially revealed

Thanks. I'm also disappointed with these. I don't really see how different they are to the standard Classic boxes which are always available. I guess there is a greater variety of parts and minifigures, but otherwise these don't seem to be a particularly useful or needed addition to Lego's products. And they certainly don't seem to celebrate the anniversary in any meaningful way.

What if Lego would release building instructions which require parts of these sets for a large 'anniversary build'? Like they did with the 40th anniversary of the Technic line?
Would that make these sets more interesting?

I'll probably buy one of each anyway, especially if there are nice discounts.

I think they are quite nice, and a bit of an antidote to the "this set makes only this model" view, which is the spirit of LEGO, of course already done through the Classic boxes. They appear to me to be a bit of a cross between the normal Classic boxes and the MBA series from 5 years or so ago due to the themes. Even as parts packs, they seem to have a reasonable selection of parts plus some nice new colour torsos.

Although the rainbow really shows that there is a missing piece in the current stacking arches.

The theming doesn't seem very strong though. The Mission to Mars doesn't seem to be very martian, with a bird type creature, a rubber duck, a pirate, ... I guess the helmet just off the edge is meant to be a spaceman's helmet. Ocean's Bottom has a castle and dragon? World Fun seems more like Ocean's Bottom, with Atlantis styled ruins with seaweed growing on them. But then there is the octopus in Ocean's Bottom so they are probably correct.

(...)

Looking at the pictures of the actual boxes now, I have to say that I can see what they wanted to do and its quite convincing. These are clearly not aimed at adults and/or fans of modulars. Instead they are what they are: pretty diverse and colourful parts-boxes for free-style building. Quite a departure of the recent developments indeed (where sets don't really invite kids to take them apart, once put together. Just saying Star Wars here), but at the other hand it is quite in the original spirit of Lego to have a set you take a apart, rearrange, recombine, etc. - so that's spot on actually.

My initiate reaction was disappointment though, because I had a very clear expectation on what it "should" be in my opinion and that was not what these sets are. Though, stepping away from these expectations, and looking at the sets in the bigger, non-AFOL-context, I am fine with them, and might actually get a couple of them. They are also actually quite like the master-builder-box Jangbricks got some weeks ago, so - why not? :classic:

In a way, these sets could be considered a modern evolution of some of the first part pack sets introduced during the System's inception, showcasing how far the System has come in color and basic brick variety.

Yeah, they could. I understand the wanting of classic style type sets for space, castle, pirates, but those sets are not so far from what we have had in the recent past. I think it is good to remind people that lego should be about free building as well as building sets following instructions. I would have liked them to do some retro-style service packs too - so a pack of various sized and shaped roof slopes all in a single colour, or a variety of windows and doors, again in a single colour. If necessary they could mix up the colours but hopefully produce each type of element in each colour so you could have a continuous coloured roof. Brick packs in a single colour would be nice too, but this is (almost) provided by PAB.

That would have been great - especially for fans who don't have access to PAB walls! I'd be very interested in solid colour packs with building elements (roof tiles, doors and windows) and just a variety of bricks.
