I dunno.  Is it really necessary to monetize colonies even more?  They already pay a salary to the mayor and generate a bank before you even count the yields of the individual builds.  I thought the point of them was to simply give a reason for player's to build land MOCs.    I don't care strongly either way tbh, but it seems like a needless addition that just adds on to the admins workload.

Frankly, mayor's can already charge a dock tax if they want to (see Oleon).

I definitely have a different goal in mind. I do not want to increase the overall inflow of money (if anything let's go the other direction), hence my suggestion to reward and punish. BUT a port where 20 ships sail should definitely earn more than a port where only 2 ships sail, that only feels natural and right.

I like the idea of a reward based on visiting ships to the settlement to offset the incentive for charging dock taxes (which will naturally have a tendency to drive ships away).

I'm all for it being complicated behind the scenes, as long as it can be automated to ensure a sustainable work load for leadership, but I do think that the game is already plenty complex on the outside.

Perhaps we should have a completely different rules thread, or at least a different post in the property thread, for settlements (would make the property post seem a lot simpler, since settlements is the complicated thing!) since that is really something only mayors absolutely need to know, and will be easier for players to understand after they've already mastered the property and ship rules.  Right now the settlement rules come before the rules for property types, which is probably not the best place to start when understanding properties.

As Maxim I said it

3 hours ago, Maxim I said:

The workload for all of this would be way too high.

Some realism is good IMO (although humorous entries are also appreciated), but making it to complex can scare people away. A simple bonus for ships visiting adds a little strategy, without skewing the game into a full scale simulator.

A question/suggestion to the Powers That Be: could the license cap be raised for the month of December? I think most of us have more time to build around Christmas, so the three available licenses feel like not enough to me. Raising the cap would encourage more activity over the holidays, as well as overall growth over all factions. You would also have more freedom in licensing "Christmas builds" alongside more regular MOCs.

@Drunknok, builds do not have to be licensed right away. The freebuild form has no limits, but the amount of DBs you receive for those builds will reduce once you go over a certain amount. Build and post as many as you care to, and just wait to file the forms. The game constraints are there for a reason.

I know and understand all of that. Constraints can be changed though, especially if it is only for a small amount of time and for a special occasion. None of what you say adresses what I have suggested, so I do not know what you are on about here.

I think this is a nice option, though of course it would always be possible for builders to "save" their MOCs and post later.  But raising the cap for a month seems like a neat idea to me.  (Not saying this because I anticipate being able to build extra myself, I probably won't!)

They can be changed of course, but BoBS has been operating under the existing ones for nigh on two years and there doesn't seem to be much need for this imho.  I recall at one point I had 6 properties waiting in queue to be licensed; they got done within a couple of months.

Now that the initial rush of the new ERA start-up is over, I think you'll find most players get 0-2 MOCs done a month (regardless of licensing).

Here are the reasons why I don't think it is necessary to raise the limit.

-You can always licence later.

-Everything does not have to be licensed.

-A lot of building time can be used to improve on building technique (challenge yourself with using a new type of roof/snot/subtle changes/endless).'

In the beginning I emphasized quickly raising my cash flow, and planned on doing the EGS aggressively, but the focus tilted into a building joy and presence that feels better than the EGS rewards. I think it have helped me to put less pressure on myself in general. The creative flow can be challenging though, when the ideas comes quicker than you can build. But not to worry, it can always be licensed later. Sometimes life happens, and that can also be nice. For those times it is good to have some extra builds for if/when that happens.

A question about the following scenario: assume two settlements less than 50 miles apart, either one or both with a medium fortress (range: 50 miles). Do the defnse stats stack, or not? So can one fort protect another settlement if it is nearby, and can forts in a scenario as given support each other?

Another question concerning the MAESTRO monopoly on apples: what ingame meaning does that have? Can I build apple plantations or is that out?

To the first question - yes, they will stack up for the extent to which the ranges coincide   Consider the case where two settlements with medium fortresses are 45 miles apart; both settlements will receive the protection of both fortresses, but the blacksmith shop 10 miles on the far side of the second village will be protected only by the fortress under whose range it falls.

As to the other, the only meaning of any in-game monopoly is that the builder who has the monopoly will benefit from a greater income when building that kind of thing than another person would.  More specifically - yes, you can build as many apple plantations as you'd like!  But if you build an apple plantation and a Maestro builder builds one too, they will make one and a half amount the DBs each month for it that you do (you will make the same amount as you would for any other plantation).

Excellent, thank you. Solving two issues at once for me!

MAESTRO

Anyway, if interested in becoming an apple mogul (it is really nice!), there is the MAESTRO Corrington branch. Please contact me or Corrington leadership when interested in becoming member of MAESTRO COR :)

Spelling fixed.

I have no interest in becoming an apple mogul, I just want to build a plantation without stepping on anybodys toes. I am also not interested in joining MEASTRO - I am a proud WTC member already. But thank you for the kind offer.

And I would like it noted that I was the 2nd worse off player of this particular MCRA!

Lol Mesabi.  Be careful who you attack next time. Our fearsome class 2 & 3 trade convoy has now captured three ships in two months.  :pir-sweet:

I hope I didn't jinx us with that bragging.

I am starting to question the validity of the data. The ETTC ships are most definitely in the registry. (Just looked them up in the Corlander fleet list)
