Is anything truly knowable with the current game mechanics?

Let me put it this way: Corrington finds the evidence sufficient. :pir-wink:

But we can of course go into an epistomological discussion about the the philosophy of knowledge, but I doubt it will change anything... :pir-tongue:

Dispatched on December 2, 617

To: Rear Admiral Fletcher, Commander-in-Chief, Royal Terra Novan Navy

From: Captain Silas Pike, Charlatan Bay Naval Escort Peregrine

It is with regret that I inform of that your navy has one again been soundly beaten and that we have taken possession of the warship WTC Beacon as a spoil of war This last action wounds me greatly, for we had made all efforts possible to avoid this very situation.

The free people of Charlatan Bay were satisfied to distance ourselves from your conflict with the notorious privateers of Bastion and had been willing to act as a neutral party.  It is a poorly kept secret that there has been frequent contact and trade with some of your territorial governors for many years, even in spite of the reign of the mad bishop.  Based on this, and the very assurances you made on November 14th of this year, our trade fleets left your northern marches under flag of truce assured of safe passage.  Yet we had not but left the sight of land when your cowardly squadron struck at us, and were not for the superior seamanship and fighting spirit of our trading ship crews we would now find ourselves unjustly in chains.

It is apparent to me now that Corrington has no honour left.  You spout honey words into our ear like a Pontillian harlot, all the while plunging the knife into our side. The people of Charlatan Bay are free.  We will not submit as you do to the whims of a weak monarch, acting like brats clinging the skirts of their dumpy scullery-maid mother in order to feign innocence only to throw stones when one's back is turned.  We will never again wear the yoke of tyranny!

I call you a liar Sir and will spread the news of your pusillanimous navy's action to all who will listen. These facts have been communicated to Mayor Amara, and I regret to inform you that a full response will likely be enacted in due time.

Cordially yours,

Captain Silas Pike

@Bregir

@Mesabi, you really stepped into proverbial with this action.  Why would you set your trade convoy on an aggressive posture? Waayyyyy too funny. :pir_laugh2:

To Captain Silas Pike, ( @Kwatchi)

The Royal Nova Terran Navy is still receiving dispatches from all over the Brick Seas and shall be carefully considering the situation. We thank you for your input in ensuring full disclosure.

However, I strongly resent your reflections upon my honour, and more so, the honour and honesty of Her Majesty and the Royal Navy, and can only assume this relies on a misunderstanding, and that such reflections will be fully retracted.

I assure you that her Majesty has neither ordered, nor sanctioned, any attacks on Sea Rat shipping outside the quarantine zone around Bastion as formerly communicated. Should any citizen have trespassed against Corlander law and policy, we are perfectly willing to take the necessary legal action. Corrington does not accept such disorder. Please forward any evidence pertaining to the transgression and we shall investigate further.

Corrington has no wish for war with the Sea Rats and fully respect the freedom of the Sea Rat settlements, who have maintained friendly and lawful relations to Her Majesty, and hope that such relations can be maintained and developed. We have sought to deepen diplomatic bonds, and although such ventures have so far, due to the disappearance of our diplomat, the esteemed Don Isaac Montoya, lead to no tangible results, the mere mutual intentions behind such efforts is to be respected.

However, should you or your brethren decide against such positive relations, Corrington stands ready to defend herself.

Lastly, I wish to remind you that Corrington did not let the infamous piracy of a few of your number lead to lasting damage to relations or outright war, and we hope that you will regard the transgression of individual citizens with reciprocity.

In service of her Majesty,

Rear-Admiral Fletcher

Corrington will strike against the pirates and anyone aiding the culprits. For harbouring pirates, we currently consider Bastion an outlaw settlement, and will subject it and the surrounding sea zones to a powerful blockade. Sea Rats not wishing to be dragged into the conflict should seek to avoid these waters, as we have no wish to cause unnecessary bloodshed.

To Rear Admiral Fletcher,

In regards to your previous promises I too must call into question your honesty. On the 14th of November you claimed to wish no unnecessary bloodshed on those Sea Rats seeking to avoid conflict. A convoy led by the ship Corporal Milton was seeking to flee Bastion with this very purpose when they were beset by ships flying the Corrington colors.

It would appear that war is the very thing Corrington desires. Why else would you make false promises to the Sea Rats under the guise of seeking justice? You claim to have been treated in-justly by the Sea Rats ships who have raided your convoys in the past. Yet you are guilty of the very same action. What does that make you Sir?

The only thing you need to defend yourself against is your own hypocrisy.

Sea Rats are free men. We make a living by the strength of our hand and the speed of our canons. Every Sea Rat is responsible for his own actions, as you claim your individual citizens are. Stop your posturing against the Sea Rats and come clean about your true desires. You desire to prey on the weak and take from any you wish. Don't hide that desire behind the guise of honor.

Is there a neutral description of this situation available? I would like to form an opinion based on facts, not propaganda - and I considerthe reports from @Bregir as pure propaganda, even as a Corlander.

What a mess! Ghost ships (Sulky Harlequin was sighted in three different locations) Double identities (apparently there are 2 Peregrines) and a Captain that apparently cannot distinguish a pirate from a Sea Rat (WTC Beacon)...

This has all the makings of a splendid tale of two nations!

For the record, I have no idea what's going on.

To sum it up, Bregir claimed Corrington had a beef with certain Sea Rat vessels. He said Corrington would aim to attack only those vessels and that all others should get out of the way. A fleet was leaving Bastion specifically to avoid getting caught in the middle when they were attacked by Corington. Another fleet, further North was also playing nice with Corrington when they were attacked.

Hence all the strong words.

Sea Rats, including faction ships, attacked us last MRCA. We declared bastion outlaw, and subjected it to a blockade, leading to some collateral damage as a side effect, since we cannot target specific vessels.

This declaration included a message to handle the culprits to avoid our sanctions, but this was met with no reply. In fact, there was little reaction from Bastion at all. (EDIT: This last statement was not justified, although there was never a resolution to the communication. I blame my horrible memory. Sorry.)

Let me know if you have a different version of the events. I see no hypocrisy in our actions. We have done as we have said.

In addition, we had a rogue captain attacking sea Rats outside this blockade, something that was never sanctioned by official Corrington. Hence the message to the mayor in Mooreton Bay to apprehend the suspected pirate and investigate the incident. He is considered a criminal, if the rumours are true.

Official IC replies will follow :)

To Captain Silas Pike, Charlatan Bay Naval Escort,

From Agnes Mesabi

We must apologize for the actions of Captain Tyrell and the Icarus Returning. The WTC Captains have been acting up lately, and it is time to discipline them. While the WTC may operate it's own navy and military separate from Corrington, we still must follow orders. This is a case in which WE, the WTC have failed. NOT Corrington. Captain Tyrell will be arrested and tried shortly.

As we are the sole causes of damage in this situation, please let me offer some restitution. The WTC is prepared to build 2 medium or larger factories in Charlatan Bay, out of pocket, to ease the tensions, but we humbly ask you return the WTC Beacon, and hope that this would be a fair agreement. Please consider my words, and my apologies.

OOC: Yeah, this is all on me. Like i said, I'll build you two factories in exchange for the Beacon's return. I'll build you one factory regardless to ease tensions. And really, sorry, this is all on me.

Actually I don’t think it is. (Wow I’m actually going to defend the WTC here.... strange times!)

yes you made a mistake and your orders to attack went against our faction plan, but let us not forget that we were attacked last MRCA, and the Rats immediately cried “you can’t tar us all with the same brush” well now the shoe is on the other foot ( lots of idioms this morning!) and they are outraged - yet apparently we are the hypocrites.

Anyway no hard feelings from me, it’s a game after all, but I can’t just sit back and let Mesabi take all the blame - to me that’s just not fair.

Just to be open with this, so Sea Rats players know it: the WTC fully supports Mesabis actions, so I am in this as well. I had nothing to do with the actions in question, but will support whatever conclusions are drawn.

OOC

@MesabiOf course it was obvious this was not a deliberate action from the outset.  Once I read your convoy had been blown off course (and really off course I gather) it became pretty apparent you weren't gunning for our little trade convoy.  But I could hardly pass up an the opportunity to knock that blow-hard big behind-Admiral Fletcher down a peg. :pir-sweet: I am not a fan of 'keeping' other person's MOCs so if you build the factories, C.Bay will pay back your license costs and hand the ship back to the WTC.

Since the Night's Whisper got knocked about and never made it out of zone 22, the FTA convoy find itself one ship light.  What I can offer is that the Beacon sails with us next MRCA to a neutral port and the Icarus can meet us there for the hand-off.  PM me once the next TMRCA is announced and we can work out a spot.  I would suggest Charlatan Bay, but I couldn't help notice that a certain King's Harbour fleet (cough cough @Bregir cough) "patrolling" zone 24 and playing some dirty pool;  I sees what yer up to der!

This last MRCA, this fleet was only patrolling for independent pirates and if we can reach a suitable closure to our little diplomatic incident, I assure you this will not change. I have a fairly good idea what official Corlander policy is, and I intend to follow it... :pir-wink:

Did we say that? Our response was more of "Sea Rats will be Sea Rats."

To all Sea Rats,

Her Royal Majesty, Queen Annetta of Corrington, recognises your right to be free, without sovereign, and has taken measures to investigate and prosecute captain Tyrell of the WTC Icarus Returning upon suspicion of Piracy.

However, Her Majesty cannot accept incursions upon the safety of her citizens or shipping. Thus, Corrington hereby requests that the Sea Rats cease all attacks on Corlander vessels in return for an immediate termination of all aggressive patrolling by the Royal Terra Novan Navy. Should you accept such a general cease fire, Her Majesty will take that as a sign of general good faith. However, Corrington will hold all Sea Rats responsible for each other upon their honour as gentlemen, and be forced to consider any further attacks as an official declaration of war.

Recognising that the Sea Rats is but a loose confederation of settlements and individual agents, Her Majesty is aware that such a general agreement may not be possible, and that some Sea Rats may not feel able to answer for their brethren. Hence, Corrington is willing to make bilateral agreements with individual settlements, mutually ensuring each other against attacks and offering open ports, outside the necessary blockade zones.

Her Majesty hopes that relations with the Sea Rats can be normalised and later improved, and now asks that you convene and decide upon your position in this matter. Corrington shall respectfully await your response, be it a general agreement of cease fire, or bilateral agreements, and will make its dispositions accordingly.

In service of her Majesty,

Rear Admiral Fletcher  Commander-in-chief

Royal Terra Novan Navy

The Sea Rats have finally formed a trading company.  It was decided that the other factions should not have the advantage of boring commercial play all to themselves any more.   Yes, this means some of us are going legit... er... maybe just semi-legit.
