[O - E10] When the Music's Over

Recommended Posts

Location: E10 – Traig IV

Tags: Spaceship, Exploration

This build takes place shortly after 'What Lies Beneath (redux)' and also references events from an old build, 'Stuck in the Middle with Lu'

Also, please note that the table area in the first picture is an almost exact copy of Pombe's design.

Also, also, please note that this entry is very long.  I apologize in advance.

On board the OCS Axle, orbiting Traig IV with the Octan main battle fleet.

Lu's Log – 12 Marzn 3817

Gods, it's been a rough couple of days.

My elation at having escaped the Kthanids lasted for about thirty seconds. Then, I remembered that the doctor's betrayal would be even more devastating to someone who'd placed all of his hope in a nearly impossible operation.

33234438906_303028d2b3_c.jpg

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  CLAPPIE, can you comm John for me, we've got to warn him off.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg   Lu, John arrived shortly after you went below ground with Dr. Igorvich.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  No!

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  It's okay, John is fine. The surgery, as far as I can tell, was successful.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Really? I mean, thank the gods, but I don't understand. Why would the doctor try to kill me, but save John?

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  It's hard to say. I have a few theories, but John will be a better source of information once he wakes up.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Where's the doctor now?

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  He and his assistant left the building a few minutes ago. I believe "404" alerted them that you had survived.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Damn.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  It doesn't matter Lu. If we need him later, I can hunt him down. Let's get John ready to travel, and head back to the Axle.

Later, on board the Axle...

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  Lu! Tell me what you remember...

I'm so used to finding a “blank spot” in that part of my memory, that the sudden flood of images is overwhelming.

24945532103_0f9f0b2f64_c.jpg

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  They called themselves the keepers of the GATES.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  They created the gravitational anomalies?

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  No. They said they'd protected the gateways for a thousand generations, but that the gateways were already ancient when they discovered them.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  'A thousand generations?' That number is useless without knowing their average lifespan. And what are they protecting the gateways from?

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Damn it, CLAPPIE. Are you going to let me tell the story, or not?

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  Sorry, Lu. Please continue.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  They said there are … creatures, that live outside our 4-dimensional space-time...

33251386032_63f30d1e8b_c.jpg

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  The creatures are called <untranslatable>. They are not malevolent, not consciously, but they have a terrible <hunger>.

33406845635_870f832493_c.jpg

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  They live in <a between place> where they are unable to interact with your <universe>. However,a spacecraft traveling <between><within><through> the gravitational anomalies is vulnerable to them.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  The disappearances – all the lost ships -

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  Many of them taken by the creatures, yes.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  What … what happens to the people on the ships that disappear?

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  They do not suffer ... but none survive.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  But - I saw my parent's ship, right before I came here.

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  Yes, a most troubling development. We fear the cycle is restarting.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Cycle?

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  The creatures are constantly testing the boundaries between <dimensions><universes>. Even now, we must remain vigilant.

33024145510_92d40715dc_c.jpg

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg They are blind attacks, merely probing for weaknesses in the <fabric> of <space-time>, but if left unchecked the breaches can grow.

33406851685_246ae9c10c_c.jpg

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  What happened to you – the creatures using the form of your parent's spacecraft as a lure – we have only observed them behaving that way once before.

33406850805_4df4c60f56_c.jpg

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  Hundreds of years ago, there was a great <breaking through>, and extreme measures were needed to stop them.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Extreme measures?

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  The system that you call “Sinden's Run” was once home to an inhabited planet.

33025940430_ff1ff4c613_c.jpg

32566058874_f528f83502_c.jpg

24941695234_522e14a6f0_t.jpg  The creatures <broke through> there, and destroying the planet was the only way to stop them.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  Shit!

33251382932_f70b64ce6e_c.jpg

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Yeah. That's why they intervened and brought me to … wherever they brought me. And why they gave me the “gift.”

33278785841_1b771f14d7_c.jpg

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  Lu … does that mean your parents …

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  … yeah. They died when the Pioneer disappeared.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  Lu, I'm so sorry.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Thanks CLAPPIE. At least now I know for sure.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  So … what now? Back to the Milky Way?

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Back? No.  No way. CLAPPIE, the best way to honor my parents is to keep on following in their footsteps.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg   I've only been to a handful of planets out here, and now that MANTIS and Kawashita are gone, there are dozens of new planets to explore.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  I had a feeling you would say that.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Had a feeling?

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  Well, I took a few seconds and ran 20,000 statistical models, taking into account all of your past behavior, and concluded that there was a 67% chance  that you would want to stay.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Aww, you're so sweet.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  I know! Anyway, I took the liberty of securing you a spot on board the Spirit of Explorien. As lead explorer. You don't need to decide now – the ship doesn't leave until tomorrow.

33278805341_0ce617ac92_c.jpg

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  CLAPPIE – I – I don't know what to say. Thank you.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  You are welcome. Now please excuse me for a few minutes. I'm learning how to handle all of Octan's banking, and it's taking more processing power than I expected.

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Sure CLAPPIE, no problem.

33278835491_102568c840_c.jpg

33278826481_3f631cfb52_c.jpg

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Oh, hey Hombre.

20422573421_9b797be227_t.jpg

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  A group photo? I don't know...

20422573421_9b797be227_t.jpg

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Hah! Alright, if you put it that way. I'll be right there...

32564303394_a09cd0dcd7_c.jpg

The next day...

19064744338_77ecd97fdf_o.jpg  Ms. Caslaug-Hing, we have clearance from the Axle to depart.  What's our destination?

17722877618_0b8a923d32_o.jpg  Second gravitational anomaly to the right, please.

18186685126_319caaebf1_o.jpg  And straight on 'till morning!

Spoiler

A huge thanks to the judges for all of their hard work, and thanks to all the players who have helped make this game a lot of fun over the past few years!

Thanks especially to @goatman461 and @Professor Thaum for encouraging me to come back and help Octan sail to victory.

Edit: forgot to give a shout out to @woofmcmoose, whose "Nature's Magic Space Holes" build did a great job expanding the gravitational anomaly lore and @rodiziorobs who inspired the four armed 'Gatekeeper' and also helped to expand the "here/between place" story.

As always, full size pics are on my flickr, and if you made it this far, thanks for viewing!

Great end to your story Lucas! The little Octan ships are great, as is the mess hall. I'm looking forward to see what you do for AG2!

I thought that table looked familiar!

Another great build Lucas, with stellar photography as usual. Nice to see your storyline wrap up, and looking forward to more great things in AG 2.0!

Glad to hear the story wrap up. Those dimensional creatures were really well done and scary! Great dialogue and great pics. I'll miss CLAPPIE a lot. He seemed such a big part of Octan and featured in a lot of builds. Thanks for being part of the farewell tour.

Thanks Medium - it was good to have a deadline to force me to tie up (most) of the loose ends in Lu's story

Thanks Kodan!  It made me really happy seeing so many Octan (and other) players use CLAPPIE in their builds - and I wouldn't be surprised if CLAPPIE 2.0 shows up in AG2 :classic:

Congratulations LucasLaughing for posting the 2.000th build of AG!! :sweet:

Thanks @Bob De Quatre - and thank you for all the hard work you've put in these past two years.  AG was awesome, and it let me explore a lot of building styles and environments that I hadn't tried before.  Looking forward to AG2!
