Hello residents of Historica!

Would like to happily present my third moc. This is my second moc for GoH, and Nocturnus. (You can check the first one here, which is a vignette.)

I built this moc in LDD first, because i've started to use that program not too long ago, and i am liking it very much. This way i can try a lot of things, and variations on a moc, and if i decide to build it in real life, i can save a lot on bricks, because of the parts list provided by LDD.

I wrote a short story again, and continue to give you some background information on my character, Gutkeled the Tangled. Here we go!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Saga of Gutkeled the Tangled II.

From the Cradle to the Vague I.:

After Gutkeled the Tangled saved Cailleach Bheur, they agreed to team up and travel together temporarily. They headed south south- east, towards the coast. The mighty Kyrrath Mountains indicated the right direction for a while. Both of them could use the company, and it was safer together. Lots of nasty things were going on in the grim and dark lands of Nocturnus on any day, but now with the civil war raging, it was more than worse. Nobody was safe!
Eventually they reached Skavenport, and paid for a ferry to one of the nearby islands, where Gutkeled had a small boat, and a cabin deep on the bayou. He invited Cally for a meal.

24413132768_0c5a6c788e_t.jpg - Cozy wee but an' ben ye got here! - took a looksy around, as she sat down.

37573203664_df47944bf8_t.jpg - Thank you! I've build it with my two hands! Carved it out of the wilderness here. Kind of reminds me of home! - said Gutkeled, and served some food, and refreshments.

24413132768_0c5a6c788e_t.jpg - How lang have ye been living here? - asked Cally before the first bite into a scone.

37573203664_df47944bf8_t.jpg - A few years i guess! Who counts, eh?! - smiled the taciturn man, with a face full of buns.

24413132768_0c5a6c788e_t.jpg - Come on! Whit are ye feart of, loon! Cat got yer tongue?! No gaun to sit here in silence, listening to yer munching! Tell me a tale from yer early years! Whit did ye dae as a bairn?! Where did ye live? - forced the vamp a story, so Gutkeled gave into it.

37573203664_df47944bf8_t.jpg - Okay- okay! Just let me collect my thoughts, and swallow my morsel! Those were eventful years of my life for sure. - sighed the man, then began.

37573203664_df47944bf8_t.jpg - When I reminisce about all those years, I see many things. Life and death strung together, like the meadows and forests in which we lived. There was family and adventure, but also solitude and uncertainty. There was laughter and joy, and there was also sadness, and tears. But even more than tears, blood was shed. And so many were left to their unadorned graves, unburied.
But to me, death was just another journey. Through the darkness, which i'm striding unflinchingly into the unknown, on a path paved with gray stone. And after all, when I reminisce about those years, I mostly remember green. Endless forest on the West, began from an end, filled with magic. Mysterious, and proud folk with pointy ears shaped like mine. Eerie atmosphere all around, isles constantly covered in thick fog. Light drizzle falling on me face. Mother's long ginger hair dancing in the cool, early moring breeze, as we were scouting the trail father suppose to arrive with the rising sun. Sometimes you could catch the gleam of his sword's blade on a clear day...

24413132768_0c5a6c788e_t.jpg - Wus he a knight? Yer auld man? - Cailleach slid to the edge of her chair curiously, interrupting Gutkeled's monologue.

37573203664_df47944bf8_t.jpg - Well, he was a warrior if needed. Always in the heart. A wanderer, seeker of forgotten tales, poet on other days. He was from the frozen lands, all year snow and mountains. Long nights and ale contests, pale lights and pine forests. Leifr Bárðrsson, clansman. Son of Bárðr, and Þórunn - the yellowish green faced man described his father, and his background passionately.

24413132768_0c5a6c788e_t.jpg - Dinna fancy they norsemen. Their blood is somehow feels cauld. Brrr!!! Shiver runs doon ma spine just as ah think of it! Whit did ya put in ma medd anyway? Tastes like a wicked witch on a rainy day! - twitched the woman from the bitter beverage that her host introduced her to.

37573203664_df47944bf8_t.jpg - It's the blood berry, Cally! That is what gives its sourness, and the scarlet color. I call this marsh mead. Fremented it meself - smirked Gutkeled, and sipped some from his green goblet.

24413132768_0c5a6c788e_t.jpg - Now that ye mention blood, ah wull need some soon! Cannot live on mead, bannock and buns. No offense chiel! Ye're a good cook, but ah just need a wee bit of me poison if ye ken what ah mean! Don't we aw?! - grinned the hungry vampire, as her eyes lit up with a twinkle, and her fangs appeared in her opened mouth.

37573203664_df47944bf8_t.jpg - All right! All right! Let me just finish my meal, and then i'll escort you to somebody i know, and can help you out with your... needs! - capitulated Gutkeled, and started to destroy the rest of the contents of his plate.

24413132768_0c5a6c788e_t.jpg - Guid! Ca' canny now! Don't choke on it! On oor way, ye can tell me mair aboot yerself! - pried the lady a bit.

She was interested in Gutkeled. Saw something in him. Didn't know what. Yet! Maybe potential, opportunity! One thing was for sure. He didn't look like an average tree hugger, or a frost- blooded. The skin, the ears... Was he some kind of drow, or elf? Was Gutkeled even his real name? And what was about with that death thing? Too many questions rose up in the mind of Cailleach Bheur, but she had to wait a wee bit to learn everything. She knew she must tag along!

Fun read and excellent cabin! Very nicely detailed, both on the outside and the inside. But I'm most impressed by how much you manage to fit in the interior, a bed, fireplace, table, and a small armory. Good work, looking forward to more.

Great work, I really like all the cheese slopes, both for the roof and ends of the building  The interior is what really steals the show though, you packed so much in there!
The armor holder, bed and fireplace are a couple of my favorite parts. Nice smoke too! :classic:

Indeed a very Nice cabin! I really like the roof, but the interior is great as well with it's cluttered feeling!

Thank you! I wrestled with the interior a bit, because i didn't plan it in LDD. Just the bed, and the fireplace.

Love the interior and the colors!

Thanks! I didn't want to go with the purple at first, but then i took my guildmates' advice. I like it! I wanted to get purple for the window shutters to, but couldn't get in on BL.

Thank you! A had to think a lot about how to build the roof. I checked a ton of mocs for ideas, but still had no clue. I think, for a beginner it is a very hard part of a building. I am satisfied with the outcome!

I like the armor holder/ mannequin too! Came out nicely! I think i will place the backpack on its front side.

For the smoke i used "white ice cream scoops" parts at first, but then it just popped up in my mind to use these "white plume feather" parts, and luckily i found some extras in my Elves sets.

Thanks very much! Yeah, i wanted to put a lot of goodies inside. I will build the rocks under the house as well- what you can see on the LDD picture. And, i am planning a 32x32 baseplate diorama too. Just need to save some money for bricks.

Lovely cabin with some neat ideas :classic:

Thank you! You know this is my third moc after my dark ages, and at first i thought i cannot build anymore. I felt that as i'm becoming older, my imagination is just deteriorating. But i am happy, because it seems i was wrong! As i started to build, the ideas started coming! Now i know, i am still capable of creating, like when i was young! Not just with Lego. My colorful imagination is still there! Maybe it was just inactive.

I like the bristling appearance of the building with all of the spiky cheese slopes. It seems very Nocturnian in flavor. My one bit of advice would be to flip the cheese slopes the other way, or better yet build them on 2x14 (or whatever length) plates that are stacked like stairs rather than on a flat plate, so as to create a more roof-like appearance. As it is, water would have a very difficult time running down the shingles, getting caught on every ridge and pooling up and eventually creating a leak.

The interior is excellent, especially the level of lived-in clutter that you have captured.

As for your plans to build it up on the rocks, I would personally advise against it, especially as you have it in LDD. The BURPs are generally frowned upon in AFOL circles as being a too-easy and unattractive way of doing rocks. If you build it up with grey bricks and slopes, that is one thing, but I would avoid using the BURPs in any visible way. If you can work it into a landscape well, go for it, but for its own sake I think it looks good the way it is.

Great work! You translated the design from the LDD really well, and the inside feels lived in!

I agree with you about the BURPs! Just came to the exact same conclusion a few days ago! At the moment, I am planning to build the rocks up with bricks and stuff. Or maybe the house will be just be on some piles, or a piece of dry land- on the bayou.

As for the slopes/ roof situation- i was thinking about that too in the past few days! (As i mentioned in another comment of mine, the roof was the hardest part to figure out. I wasn't a 100% satisfied with the outcome, but at that moment, that was the best i could came up with.) So recently, i wanted to flip the slopes on the other way to, but that looks weird in my opinion. Because then the high, straight side of the slopes facing the edge of the roof. What do you think?

Actually, i was playing with the idea to put them facing each other in pairs. Check it out!

At the moment i don't have the bricks to execute your idea, which would be the best! To lay them down like stairs. Also, i used plates as the foundation of the roof, because you can flip the roof up, to get into the interior.

But i am working on a Fabuland cottage in LDD for weeks now, and the outhouse utilizes that technique!:sweet:

What are the other residents of Historica think about the roof?

Looks really nice in the flesh, the windows and framework are even better with the printed Elves glass! Like others already said: it's surprising how many features the interior accommodates, it has a lot of character! On top of that, great story!

Some recommendations, then. For the roof, I think the one where they face each other in pairs looks best and makes the most sense. The older BURPs look quite horrible indeed, very unnatural shaping and also recessed studs, so they require a lot of work covering them with slopes and tiles. However, the newest BURP actually looks perfectly suitable for use in MOCs, due to its more natural shape, so you don't have to put nearly as much effort in making the cover.

If you want more advice for the base, just ask! :classic:

Thanks @Exetrius! And as you probably noticed, i made the floor/ base more than one plate thick too!:sweet: As you advised.

Yeah, i planned the cabin with those Elves windows, but couldn't found them in the LDD.

I think too, that the roof would look best with the slopes facing each other. But what do you think, they should be in columns, or rows? This is what i mean.:

1. The original idea.:

I think in columns (e.g. picture 2) is the way to go, from an engineering point of view it makes more sense, since it drains naturally that way, and I think it would look better too.

I agree, as long as the outermost ones are also adjusted to the new pattern (which they are not in the LDD picture).

My critiques:

I think you should get away from the BURPs all together. From what I've seen, as one progress through their building abilities, BURPs are used in a support sense only. The new BURP and especially the old one, will never look natural enough to pass as a rock formation. I also agree with Exetrius, from an engineering stand point the columns are going to work really well.

I really like the roof design in picture 2, again from an engineering stand point, water will drain away easier. The Elven fixtures flow really well here, and the color scheme, while unorthodox, works good. This build just needs a bit of grass here and there on a water or hand built rock base and it's good to go.
