OOC: You don't have the soma, the little extra stats at the bottom are the result of a copy-paste error. They are the stats as they were before the battle. You are also at full health now.

OOC: Ah, okay.

Round One Slavers the Sequel: Slaving Again

Lane bombards with Fire Bomb - Greater Bombarb (20 + 10) x 2 + 40 + 10 = 110 damage per enemy
> Parvati uses Scroll of Blinding - Success (Blinded -1 ether)
> Darksten v. Wermheim - Special Damage (Wermheim Hastened)
Medusa v. Wermhiem - Shield (Phalanx Three Rounds)
Throlar v. Captain - Damage (35/2=18 Damage)

Barkley bites Wermheim - Failure

Lane is able to hobble their foes significantly, and Medusa protects the party, but no killing blows are landed.

Matthias shakes his head in frustration. "Of course, because who doesn't love slavery, so long as they profit?"

Battle Order
> Lane: Bombard (Lightning Bomb)
Medusa: Spear v. Captain
> Darksten: Bow v. Wermhiem (don't attack Captain)
> Matthias: Heal v. Soliman
Barkley: Bite Wermhiem
Throlar, Cedric, Parvati, Soliman, Johnny: Wait

Strategy discussion: The captain's attack is still threatening, depending on how Lane fares with the bombard. Better to keep this under control rather than get everyone hurt. If the captain summons a mob, we'll have another enemy next round.

Darksten grumbled to himself as once again his foe taunted him with a drink. It seems he required more practice in the woods as his arrows were lately failing him.

Once again, notched an arrow hoping to actually hit his intended target.

Darksten and Lane follow the plan

OOC: I assume that should the Captain go down to Lane's bombard, you would have Medusa switch to Wermheim? My rolls have been pretty bad lately, so it might be good to have back up so we can get this fight over before the extra mob...

OoC:  Realized that the last round of damage was wrong because regular bombs deal 5 damage, not ten.  But leaving it as is.

Round Three Slavers the Sequel: Slaving Again

Lane loads Lightning Bomb and Bombards - Bombard (20+5)+40+5=70 Damage, Wermheim KO'd)
Medusa v. Captain - Critical Hit (KO)

Lane and Medusa finish the battle swiftly, making it so that maybe the heroes didn't need to be there.

The slavers lay dead or dying.  Their Captain lays face down, his hair a few meters away - now even more clearly a wig.  His skin crawls and drips.  He groans.

"Bad day for Slaver Captain," he grunts as he tries to drag himself away.

Cedric snickers as the captain attempts to drag himself away. Pathetic. Cedric walks over to the captain and smashes his old mulled wine bottle on his head. "Oh, no you don't." Cedric picks up the captain by the collar, and checks him for valuables. "What should we do with him, Matthias? Send him to the Town Watch? Let Medusa torture him? Give him a stern lecture on the ethics of slavery?"

As the knight cornered the slaver captain, Darksten could not help but smirk at the human hero's "unique" approach.

"We may want to get a healer on the ship's captain who got back stabbed at the start too..."

Seeing that the situation was secure, the assassin started to check the surrounding crates and boxes for "evidence" (and anything else of value) before anyone could object

Content to let his comrades smash the surviving slaver around for the moment, Matthias quickly heals Soliman, then rushes to the stabbed Bonaparte captain, signalling Captain Lane to follow. Examining the man's wounds, the druid does his best to save the man's life. As he works, he speaks to Lane in a low voice. "Captain Lane, I hope the Bonapartes will not take well to the use of their port as a shelter for kidnappers and slavers? Perhaps an increase of inspections on the dock is in order? Perhaps I'm speaking out of turn, given my relative anonymity in your organization, but I would hate to see Eubric and the High Kingdoms alike descend further into the mire."

Another thought hits the gnome as he finishes patching up his patient, and he calls out to Barkley. "Sir Barkely, can you smell any other kidnapping victims - or slaves - on this ship? Perhaps there are more who would appreciate freedom."

As Cedric picks up the Slaver Captain a human mask falls to the boards of the ship and the Captain's skin peels off to reveal green skin below it.  The Captain is an Orc.  His head lulls side to side, the blow from the bottle having apparently knocked him totally unconscious.

"Zoml," snarls Medusa.  "Give him to me.  I'll break every bone in his body."

Darkstan finds rations, but nothing else of value.

"Noted.  It is difficult to parse out the best path.  People want freedom, but then they go and do this."  The ships captain stabilizes as Matthias tends to him.

<I will check the ship,> yaps Barkley smartly as he darts away.  Captain Lane turns and looks at Cedric and the hatred in Medusa's eyes.

"The slaver should be turned over to Bonaparte justice.  We are responsible for these ships."

What will the heroes do?

Matthias picks up the mask, wondering if it still holds any magic. "Perhaps that is so in the Wastes, or the orc lands of Baltarok. Lady Medusa, this Orc committed his crimes here, in Eubric - and they are crimes only because the Bonapartes and the other Houses say it is so. It is better that he be tried - and punished - here, so that those Houses will be reminded of the laws they have made and continue their enforcement. Otherwise, his ilk will just be back here, chaining up Orcs to sell to unscrupulous buyers everywhere. I know it is of little satisfaction to you, but Captain Lane is correct, he must be held here."

Turning to the unmasked slaver Orc but still addressing Medusa, Matthias adds, "Although if he somehow escapes justice here and flees back to the Orc lands, I'm sure his fate is in his own hands...." The gnome's voice leaves no doubt as to what he believes that fate would be. He turns to the other Bonaparte captain. "And what do you have to say for yourself? I suppose you will say that your customers pay heavily for their privacy... does your conscience pay heavily for their privacy as well?"

"As much as all of us, especially Medusa, want to see him suffer, Matthias is right. He should go to the proper authorities. However, I propose he should go to the town watch. They are the primary law in Eubric, after all."

"While I agree with the sentiment, Master Cedric, I think the dockmaster and our captain here would both tell you - as they earlier told me - that the Town Watch only has power because they report to the Bonapartes, and the other Houses. Getting all six Houses to come to some agreement about his punishment would be a dogged, political affair without result. The Bonapartes happily have several representatives here already, so it seems expedient that they handle the situation. As I understand it, naval personnel are not known for leniency."

Darksten finishes circling the room, pocketing a few rations before joining the circle around the human impersonator.

"My vote is that we send this thing to the Bonapartes.

If we were in the land of these Orcs I would say otherwise, but we are here and this is not their territory.

There might not be a central authority outside of Heroica in this city, but I say let the Bonapartes deal with this mess as the sea trade is their realm.

Besides, it is about time someone starts consolidating power, and start giving some structure to this place"

Throlar finally spoke up.

"While I do see Medusa's side, I must agree with my companions. We should hand him over to the Bonapartes. We are in a place where there is at least some semblance of civilization, and there are laws, such as they are. Rules of conduct, such as they are, that must be obeyed lest we fall. The whole history of civilization is an endeavor to create clear rules, clear codes of conduct, that prevent us from being monsters. For if we ever understand how fragile, how artificial, these rules are, and discard them, what remains to prevent us from becoming heartless, mindless beasts?"

Throlar realized everyone was staring at him.

"Oh, sorry," he said, "Was I rambling? I have a bad habit of doing that sometimes."

"He'll be brought to the Blackgull.  If it's any consolation, the Blackgull is known for being fair, but not for being generous.  Especially with slavers.  Especially in his own bay."

The other Captain has still not recovered enough to respond to Matthias' harangue.

"Yes," says Solimon, stepping in front of Medusa.  "We are strangers here, and while there may be no law, there is custom.  If the Bonapartes truly rule these docks, then it is their job to deal with the slaver, and their shame to face him.  Thank you for your assistance, Captain Lane."

Lane tosses an additional 100 gold to the heroes from the Slaver Captain's body.

Catching Lane's bag of gold and gathering the loot from the slavers' remains, Matthias hands it out to the party, doing his best to make the division equal.

Loot Distribution
Cedric: Mead
Darksten: 160 Gold
Matthias: Trickster's Mask of the Human

Loot So Far
Cedric (≈ 335 gold, 4 exp) - Chicken Drumstick (270 gold and a trip to Etheria), 65 gold
Darksten (≈ 325 gold, 3 exp) - Rusty Dagger (20 gold), 4x Shattering Arrow (4x20? gold), 225 gold
Matthias (≈ 285 gold, 4 exp) - 4x Shattering Arrow (4x20? gold), Trickster's Mask of the Human (150 gold), 55 gold
Throlar (≈ 415 gold, 2 exp) - City Watch Halberd (30 gold), Grating Stone (250 gold plus membership in the Crescent Union), 4x Shattering Arrow (4x20? gold), 65 gold MINUS Fire Bomb (5 gold), Lightning Bomb (5 gold)

If anyone has heartburn with the loot divison, let me know. I tried to slightly favor Throlar, then Darksten due to their missing out on EXP. I am not counting the consumables that Cedric's been holding for the party; if anyone wants specific ones, ask him for them before we split up at the end.

"I'd gladly take a little rep boost with the Bonapartes."

Loot distribution looks good. I would've liked a little gold, but then again, I didn't really do much, and I got that chicken leg.

"May you have smooth winds, a following sea" the assassin offers, while passing Captain Lane his magic compass "and may you always know where your destination lays"

The heroes and Johnny Everyman follow Medusa, Parvati and Solimon back to the clubhouse.  Outside, they hear voices within.  Medusa's eyes narrow, she hefts her weapon and shield, and bursts through the door.  The others follow her.

Darksten tenses at the newcomers, and only starts to react when his party lead recognizes the newcomers. Still, the assassin keeps his distance from the new creatures and prefers to let the others due the talking.
