those cool concept vehicles Technic used to do....

Recommended Posts

sets like 8417, 8432 and 8462 were amazing and creative looking sets. very unique in terms of colour, parts and the look of these vehicles...these sets features lots of unique wheels and tyres, metallic silver!!

they were very inventive and real fture/concept looking vehicles.....alas Technic designers lost their mojo and played it safe from then on, trotting out the yearly batch of yellow construction vehicles....sigh!

Probably because it would look like crap with studless parts! With studded I think you could get away with more outlandish designs.

EDIT, Eh, on second thoughts I might have jumped too quickly to that conclusion. Need to think on that some more. I always wanted realistic and authentic MECHANICS so the unrealistic LOOK of the thing never bothered me as much.

Sorry to say, but that wrecker and the motor are butt-ugly imho.

I like 8462 and 8428/8432 for looking unique at that time. Not sure if such design/approach would be attractive these days.

Today I don't think there is one official model that is not based on a real world or TV counterpart. I suppose LEGO figured out that they sell more of the items that buyers can relate to. People want a Porsche or a Mini Cooper on their shelves, and LEGO simply becomes the way its made. If they make their own concept car, then the designer becomes "LEGO" too and buyers would be left scratching their heads.

But on the flip side, I would be very eager to build a concept car unrelated to anything we see online or at a motor show. We definitely don't see enough of those around.

i.e. the 8437 has front steering and V6 in very tide compartment.... considering the parts tha they had back then it is really well made

I may be in the minority here, but I would like to see the 8432 and 8462 done in modern parts. Not so much the 8417, because I am not much a fan of motorcycles.

Just MHO, YMMV,

I wouldnt mind more sets like that, as long as it doesnt stop me from getting my realistic race car / motorcycle refreshes.

Those sets are really close to when lego went bad for a while though, but that very early stage of panels/liftarms had a few gems, 8437 for instance still holds a fond place in my heart. But sets like 8213 and the following decline in technic sets dont need to come back.

For me, these models were partly the reason why I lost interest in Technic back in the day. I always had a preference for sets which represented a real machine and were recognizable as such. I just couldn't relate to these sets, because they did not resembled any vehicle I knew. The styling felt too quick and dirty and the colors (lime, azure, purple) were often not compatible with the bricks I already had.

I'm really happy with the course TLG has taken since then, so I have no desire to see those kind of creations back.

Unfortunately I only saw these sets on the internet and I would like to see more of these.

I remember that set. It came out when Lego were struggling. Technic had taken a different direction. almost like the space lego, I liked that set but I did by the wrecker and a digger which we can relate to. i'm so glad they turned it around.

This. I, too, prefer more realistic stuff.

I wouldn't mind seeing maybe one futuristic/concept thingy every year, maybe replacing one of the usual pullback-racers. Depends what they could come up with thoughl
