Heroica RPG - Quest#148: Once Upon a Time in Goetia

"Althior, how does it feel to let something like that go? I'm curious, as from what I've seen with such powerful objects, they usually hold a tight grip on their bearers, so much so that oftentimes it becomes impossible to let release them. You seem to have done so with no qualms, though."

Althior hands the copy of the pandemonican to Byblos. "I suppose this is the only option. Farewell Byblos; may you find peace in the next world,"

Byblos nodded grimly as he accepted the other copy of the dark book, and handed back the items that the heroes lent him at the beginning of the quest.

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg"You made the right decision. I will make sure these two books will never see the light of our sun again. Please, send my love to the Veterans and Scheherazade, and tell Bookmark that if he messes up the library, I will come back from Azazot itself to haunt him if I have to. Take care, everyone!"

The metasimian librarian opened his original Pandemonicon and began muttering incomprehensible words. Suddenly the green light from the rift focused on a single ray on him and he began to rise from the floor.

heroicaquest148-netherlord.jpg"Be prepared for anything out there, brave adventurer", the Netherlord said. Byblos' eyes teared up, but he left with a smile on his face.

The heroes watched with the Fenarian until the rift in the sky had swallowed Byblos. Then, in a great big SWOOSH, the vortex closed. The sickly green luminosity was gone, and everything fell silent and still.

heroicaquest148-netherlord.jpg"I shall return to Fenario now. With the Psycrown, just in case any of the Mindflayers of old are still lurking somewhere", the Netherlord announced, grasping the crown from the imp's head using telekinesis. Then he turned to the Fenarian necromancer. "Namyrra, I meant what I said. Come visit home some day. Everything is forgiven."

Then the Fenarian was gone as well. With nothing holding them in Goetia anymore, the heroes returned to the king's encampment.

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg "You're back! Did you bring anything for me?"

heroicaquest148-auntbriamarte.jpg "Mother be blessed!"

heroicaquest148-kingjovis.jpg "Ah, our heroes return triumphant! Aunt Briamarte told us you helped save all these people from the demons, and then walked into the castle to finish the deed. And here you are, safe and sound, with the rift gone! How can I ever repay you?"

Althior shrugs. "Dealing with Abraxas, the Oculoids, and Ambergaze over the last five years? Trying so hard to repel darker temptations like this has become second nature to me I suppose,"

He looks to the king, seemingly ignoring the losses suffered by the group. "Just doing our job..." he states, half-heartedly.

You could never pay us back. I think, but I refrain from saying anything for now.

Atramor turned to look at the great, blue emptiness of the sky for a moment, then turned back to the king.

"Yeah. Here's you can repay us: fifty foot statue. Solid stone. Bronze plated. Everyone who walks into Goetia needs to be starin' at a giant goddamned Metasimian. Got it?"

Hybros watched as Byblos ascended, thinking perhaps he was watching his last chance to get the rest of the imps out of Azazot. He gave a small wave before the portal closed and gazed at the empty sky that was left behind. He pulled the rim of his hat down farther and returned his gaze to the ground.

He said nothing to the king or priestess or even Sham. head hung low.

OOC: I should have exactly 170 gold thanks to overkill from Baba. Unfortunately, Hybros wasn't wearing the Medal of Glory so he should just be at level 48. I would've tried to switch it in, but...

King Jovis slapped his forehead.

heroicaquest148-kingjovis.jpg"Ah, so I did! Marshal Barret, bring these fine people the 1000 gold I promised!"

heroicaquest148-marshalbarret.jpg"Straight away, my liege!"

heroicaquest148-queencoraline.jpg"You also saved the infant son of the Lowcraft family", said Queen Coreline, holding the baby the heroes had rescued from the demons' claws. Her rigid demeanor seemed to have melted by the child. "We were saddened to hear about the loss of our close friends, but me and my husband will raise their son as our own child, for we have none of our own. He will have everything he will ever need and more, thanks to you."

OOC: I should have exactly 170 gold thanks to overkill from Baba. Unfortunately, Hybros wasn't wearing the Medal of Glory so he should just be at level 48. I would've tried to switch it in, but...

QM Note: Fixed.

Althior looks to Sham. "He wanted to close the rift. Only way to do it was from the other side..."

"And he got rid of two of the damned books that caused all of this."

Atramor frowned, thinking briefly back to the trip into the demon-infested desert of Azzurat.

"Gonna have to get a letter to his aunt, I guess. Hell..." The rogue spun the huge, wide-brimmed hat in his hands. "And Catnip, too. Whatever those other archdemons are up to, someone's sure as hell got to put a stop to them...and there's one more Pandemonicon floatin' out there somewhere. At least the witch won't get her claws on it. Speakin' of archdemons..." Atramor pulled his freshly-decamodified Archdemon (Dark 10) card out of the hat. "Think ya' can get me somethin' for this, Sham? That angel stone worked like a charm."

"Think ya' can get me somethin' for this, Sham? That angel stone worked like a charm."

The half-orc merchant looked horrified when he took the card from Atramor.

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg"A-are you sure? Summoning a nice, pretty and benevolent archangel is one thing, but a personification of an archdemon... Hope you can control it, too."

Giving in, Sham transformed the card into another summonstone, this one pulsing with dark energy.

heroicarules-summonarchdemon.jpg

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg"Well, I guess we're done here, then. Too bad you couldn't pick anything up for me..." The king and the queen glared at Sham sternly, so he hastily continued. "...but of course the safety of these people is the most important thing! Our ship's awaiting us back at Miranda, anyway. Take care, your Majesty!"

heroicaquest148-kingjovis.jpg"Heroica is always welcome to Heartland. In fact, we would be honored to have our own branch unit. I should contact your Veterans about that... But yes, thank you for everything you did, and gods' speed on your way!"

The heroes stepped into the Shammobile, and soon the rolling hills around Goetia were left behind them. The trip back went in a haze, and sooner than they thought, they were back at Heroica Hall. The library seemed awfully empty and quiet without the metasimian hard at work. Bookmark, Byblos' Dauntlet assistant, peeked behind a pile of books.

heroicanpc-bookmark.jpg"A logical solution", Bookmark said upon hearing about Byblos' fate. "But Master Byblos seemed to know it might come down to this, for he left me instructions about your reward. If any of you would ever like to learn the way of the scholar, come to me and I will teach you. I can never fully replace Master Byblos, but I will do my best - for him."

Heroica was never quite the same without it's fussy but wise metasimian librarian, but the pain of it was eased by the knowledge that Olegaia was now much less evil place to live in.

~*THE QUEST IS SUCCESSFUL!*~

QM Note: Althior's gold is multiplied by 1,25 by the Cornucopia, but I'll leave it up to you to divide it as you see fit.

A heart-felt thank you for each and everyone of you. Heroica has been an incredible and important journey for me, and you all have been there since the early days, so ending it with you was a true honor.

Hybros sulked the entire way back, opting to stare over the ship's stern at the boundless Crystalline Sea. His thoughts lay primarily on his people and how he would ever complete his life goal. Zoot's Reaper was finally quiet, but Hybros wondered about the nature of the weapon - no, creature. Something had led him to Eubric at the beginning, and the Zoot's Plaything had become inseparable from the imp since. And it had led him to find his people - and the archdemons. Had a part of Zoot been with him all along? It was not out of the question, for he must have escaped from Azazot somehow. And what was the true intention of the small piece of Zoot?

His thoughts drifted to Byblos. He wondered if he would ever see the metasimian again. And Baba. Without ever having met the witch, he had been the one to kill her in a few fatal blows. He didn't even realize the threat she posed, not fully, not like Althior or Boomingham. For someone who seemed so impossible to beat, Heroica found a solution. Hybros realized that no single person could ever change the world like Baba wanted to.

---

In Heroica Hall, Hybros muttered, "Ehehm, well that is that, I suppose... I will take my part of the quest reward before dealing with some business in the Hall, and then visit my people in Zylstra. There is much to tell." He tipped his hat to the questmates. "We did well in Goetia. I will see you around, I am sure. Monk, if it is all the same to you, that Pentacle... I could make use of it. In exchange I could give you this Scholar's Codex. It seems you are the best suited besides Althior to learn from Bookmark. And I believe this Horned Demon Hat belongs to you. And Namyrra, will you return to your own people as well?" He handed her back the Medal of Glory and Overkill Gloves.

OOC: I'm glad I could be on your final quest, Sandy. Heroica has meant a lot to me, so thank you for all your hard work in making this a really enjoyable experience. Hopefully you'll still have time to pop in now and then. :sweet:

"Of course. That is an acceptable trade."

I then return the Amulet of the Court to Atramor.

"What a night this has been. It's almost is surprising that it's all over so quickly. I mean, I could hardly have expected it. It is relieving to say the least, but the victory also seems...somehow empty. Like there are no more worlds to conquer. Heroica has beaten the devil's best. What more is there?"

Hybros nods and accepts the Pentacle, absorbing its power immediately. He distributes 28 gold to each party member, plus 49 extra to Namyrra. "From the gloves. I will also need my Bladerang back, Atramor, eheh."

Seeing that no one was responding, Hybros accepted his part of the gold and his Bladerang and tipped his hat. "See you around."

"See you around gentlemen, it's been a pleasure."

Namyrra picked up her gold, and the even heavier pouch with gold for Arthur, from Althior and went in search of a good long bath.

Pentacle of Asmodeus (Max. ether +6 but spellpower -6 when merged into an artifact at a smithy.

Atramor returns Hybros' Banana Bladerang and Spinning Bolas, and Althior's Medal of Glory.

The rogue thief looked around the library intently. Things would be a lot different there from now on, there was no dying that. Was it worth it?...maybe. But two of Heroica's biggest threats were gone now. And they weren't coming back anytime soon.

"Been a hell of a thing, mates."

"Don't worry about it, monk. One way or another, world's always gonna churn out more scum that need to be killed." Atramor looked out through the Hall's nearest window, briefly. "And Heroica's always gonna be there to do it."

"You're right. There's no need to worry about not having problems to solve. It's just...never mind. See you folks at the hall!"
